STAR WARS: James Mangold's DAWN OF THE JEDI Reportedly DEAD Under New Lucasfilm Leadership

It seems Logan director James Mangold won't be heading into a Galaxy Far, Far Away after all, as a new rumour claims that his Dawn of the Jedi movie is now "dead" at Lucasfilm.

In April 2023, then-Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy took to the stage at Star Wars Celebration in London. She announced a few new Star Wars movies, including a story about the First Jedi from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold.

It was revealed that the Star Wars movie, rumoured to be called Dawn of the Jedi, is set roughly 25,000 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, but few updates have been shared since.

Mangold has since shared some measured enthusiasm for it in interviews, but this feels an awful lot like yet another movie announced by Kennedy that will never materialise.

The filmmaker co-wrote the movie with Andor's Beau Willimon, though he's since moved on to the upcoming Game of Thrones movie

During her exit interview from Lucasfilm, Kennedy said, "Jim Mangold and Beau Willimon wrote an incredible script, but it is definitely breaking the mold and it’s on hold. It’s not just my decision, especially when I’ve got a foot out the door. Anything’s a possibility if somebody’s willing to take a risk."

Now, Jeff Sneider has weighed in on The Hot Mic (via SFFGazette.com) to share word from a source who says that the movie is "dead." He added, "I can’t say that conclusively, but it doesn’t sound good. I think Mangold is focused on that Timothée Chalamet heist movie is what I think. I think Swamp Thing could be after that."

There's been similar chatter elsewhere on social media this week, with all signs pointing to new Lucasfilm President Dave Filoni deciding to pull the plug on this potentially controversial prequel. After all, we all saw how poorly received The Acolyte's attempt to flesh out this Galaxy's past was.

Instead, it seems Filoni has his eye on the future, telling stories that expand this Galaxy beyond 2019's divisive Skywalker Saga finale, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

In 2023, Mangold explained what drew him to tell a story set thousands of years before any other Star Wars movie or TV show, strongly hinting that he intended to take a much different approach to the franchise...which obviously didn't work out so well with Indiana Jones

"When I talked to some of the Star Wars clerics that keep track of all of these timelines, I was like 'So when would this happen.' And they were like '25,000 years before Episode I,' and I was like 'Oh, I was looking for some distance, but that’s distance.' I’ll do it, I might find Charlton Heston in an abandoned subway station but I’ll do it."

"The reality for me is that that feeling of space, no pun intended, was something that I felt was really important not to get away from fan service or the intricacies of what George had set up and dreamed of," he continued, "but to just have the space to tell a story and not be instantly encumbered with the bases you have to hit."

What do you hope to see from the Star Wars franchise in theaters moving forward?

Might be a good thing. I don't think it would have done justice to what the atmosphere of any of the video game prequels achieved.

@JFerguson - Exactly. I want that era left alone honestly. The comics, novels, and games did it justice and don’t interfere with the current canon. Leave it be.

Dave Feloni will fix everything. Trust the process

I trust Dave on this, if he decided to cancel it should be for the best.
At least now DC will probably fast track the Swamp Thing movie.

I’m expecting LucasFilm to announce a Knights of the old Republic trilogy, fingers crossed if anyone can make KOTOR happen is Dave.

@ImNotaBot - That's probably the reasoning behind this. KOTOR instead.

I mean what are we losing, a decent director? SFW, Rian Johnson was a decent director. It's not necessarily what we need. I'm sure there'll be other notable directors.

I mean it's not like Jon Fav is just a dude off the street.

In Filoni we trust.

Okay… we’re getting somewhere. We honestly don’t need another prequel especially about how the Jedi were created.

The same people kissing Filoni feet would be raging about how the franchise is dead and they aren't trusting good filmmakers, if this decision was made by Kennedy.

@FinnishDude - don’t worry they’ll turn on him too it’s what Star Wars fandom does

Mangold is pretty overrated anyway. He's got a 50% doves rate

@ProfessorWhy - doves lol stupid phone. * success

@ProfessorWhy - Hot take, I might put that number even lower. He has made some perfectly fine movies, but nothing that I would put on a pedestal and, frankly not many people did either, but after Logan everyone acted like he was one of the best of the business.

ProfessorWhy - 3/7/2026, 3:39 AM
@FinnishDude - yeah, I set it high because I hate biopics more than most, especially musician biopics. 3:10 to Yuma, The Wolverine, and Copland were the only ones I liked. Not a fan of Logan

So what announced Star Wars movies are actually still in active development? Maybe we'll get some answers at Star Wars Celebration next year
ProfessorWhy
ProfessorWhy - 3/7/2026, 3:43 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I think l Lucasfilm is going to wait on the reception of the next 2 movies before committing to a long term plan in a public way. Obviously it's veering toward Filoni's vision, but Disney will want some clear show of support via BO$$$ before they pull a KK and announce 5X more projects than they will ever make
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/7/2026, 4:29 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Maybe none of them.

You can tell when someone's serious about taking over a studio like this and when they're not.
The serious ones scrap everything that was in production before them and start over with their own designs. The ones who just want to collect a paycheck continue some or most of them because it's easiest.

Compare Kevin Feige inheriting Fox/Marvel to anyone who's taken over DC since Man of Steel.
Even Gunn to an extent. Peacemaker S2, Creature Commandos and Superman were all things he was working on before he got the gig. Okay so they're his, so that makes it a little different, but two of them were written for the old DCEU and that effects the entire creative design of his universe.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/7/2026, 5:52 AM
@bkmeijer1 - that seems likely aswell as some more tv shows perhaps because Ahsoka S2 ,Maul & The Ninth Jedi are the only new ones announced that are set to premiere this year as of now.

@bkmeijer1 - The D23 2026 Expo is in Anaheim this summer so expect that to be when things are announced since it's the perfect time for Dave to take the stage and start to share his vision of the future of the Star Wars universe.

Dawn of the Dead.

Wait , so this partly is Sneider speculating on his own aswell as him having heard from a source that the project is “dead” but he can’t definitively say so even though he still does?.

Anyway , I hope Dawn of The Jedi isn’t scrapped since it sounded like the most interesting out of the SW films announced thus far which was as a “biblical/religious epic” in the vein of The Ten Commandments & Ben Hur about the discovery of the Force set 25,000 years before the prequels.

Honestly , I think both this and Mangold’s Swamp Thing are just on hold right now since he’s focused on his next film with Timothee Chalamet at Paramount given he signed a first look deal with them which means he is to give their project preference over any others!!.

Good. Give the man his Boba Fett movie. Have Fett leave his position on Tatooine and go to war with the other bounty hunters in a gritty space western. That’s more his style anyways. Plus, Fett is just waiting on the shelf for a great story.
