Obi-Wan Kenobi arrives on Disney+ next month, and on May 4, Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm will release the first issue in writer Christopher Cantwell's new Star Wars: Obi-Wan anthology series.

Joined by artist Ario Anindito, the first chapter will take us back to the Jedi Master's childhood at a time when he was a youngling in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant (before he met Qui-Gon Jinn). Talking to SYFY about what fans can expect from the eight-year-old Jedi, Cantwell explained. "I think Obi-Wan, regardless of age, has certain indelible traits. He’s incredibly loyal, and has shown deep connection to certain people in his life. He is honor-bound, but willing to push boundaries when need be."

"Part of that he likely learned from Qui-Gon, but a lot of that in my opinion is intrinsic. I think these are things that would be present in Obi-Wan from an early age," the writer continued. "Some things are already hard-wired in. Obi-Wan’s 'hard wired' traits are what we see in this story."

Future issues in the five-part series will take place at various points in Obi-Wan's life, and Cantwell would go on to tease a very different sort of adventure with Qui-Gon. "We’re going to see Obi-Wan as a padawan, which means we’re going to see him with his master, Qui-Gon. But I think the story is unexpected. I mentioned Universal horror...I tried to bring a good dose of that into Issue #2."

Exploring more of Obi-Wan's life promises to be a lot of fun, especially with the TV series delving into what he was up to between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

The art style is quite neat.

I’ve never really picked up a Star Wars comic, anything outside the movies never really interested me, but I might take a look at this

@Twenty23Three - Outside the OT, I'd say on the whole the non-movie content has been stronger than the movies. There's just a lot more freedom for writers to be creative and do new things than these tentpole projects that feel like they have to check a lot of familiarity and nostalgia boxes.

@Waddles - I have heard before that they are worth a look. Maybe I’ll venture down the rabbit hole

@Waddles - not touched on anything outside the films, games, and now the shows. Always avoided the expanded universe as a kid because it didn’t interest me and the new stuff I’ve never looked into

@Waddles - well, as I keep talking people that Obi Wan will be me bowing out of watching Star Wars, maybe the same character will be my gateway into reading it haha

To me the lack of general interest in this comic amusingly underscores the fact that most of the people who are hyped about the Obi-wan Disney+ series don't actually care that much about the character's story. There's a novel about his time on Tatooine. There are comics about his time on Tatooine. Now there's a comic detailing his backstory. And people will ignore all of that before and after the release of the show while claiming that they're excited because they love the character and want to learn about the unexplored areas of his life.

Be real. You like blockbuster budget action and actors you've formed a nostalgic attachment to. It's not a bad thing, but you can't claim that story is the most important thing to you if you can only engage with and appreciate a story when it's told in the medium you're most accustomed to.

@BIGBMH - *looks around*

Where do you see lack of general interest?

@Vigor - On social media, a lot of the comments in response to the announcement of this series were like "I'll pass." "No thanks, just gonna wait for the show."

Even on this site, which I would imagine has a higher percentage of comic book readers than the general audience, I've seen far less engagement with articles about the comic series than even run of the mill rumor articles regarding live action Star Wars projects.

I don't expect the same level of hype, but you would think a larger percentage of people would at least view the comic as a fun appetizer leading up to the event they're anticipating.

@BIGBMH - I just came out of the article about the Dr. Strange movie poster with like 3 pages of comments. This has 14 now 15 after I hit send. As a lifelong SW fan I don't consider any of this Lucas Canon, it's Disney content created for a tv streaming service to sell subscriptions. This has nothing to do with the overall story of Star Wars that George started many years ago.

Obi- Wan was a Padawan training in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, this is not a story that matters at all or adds anything just like the Solo movie.

@WarMonkey - IMO, there's a big difference between additional story told in a novel or comic and additional story told in a movie or tv series. There's not huge money in books or comics, so I find they tend to be more stories for story's sake. Not essential, but an expansion for you to take or leave if you want it.

With a movie like Solo or a show like Obi-wan, there's a lot more money invested, so the tendency is more to try to make it feel like it's some essential, must-see epic that will change the saga for the better.

So while a comic will just take the facts like "Obi- Wan was a Padawan training in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant" and flesh those out for those curious about the details, a show will take the known facts "Obi-wan lived on Tatooine for 20 years in isolation, keeping watch over Luke" and be like "...but he also fought Inquisitors! And, and...And Darth Vader! He fought Darth Vader AGAIN and it was SUPER epic. You've gotta see it! It's awesome! Please watch this because you're nostalgic and want to see a familiar character in questionable scenarios!"
