STAR WARS: Plans For A Mandalorian-Led FPS Have Been Scrapped By EA; Updates On IRON MAN, JEDI 3, And More

EA has laid off hundreds of staff members, resulting in an upcoming Star Wars first-person shooter featuring an unnamed Mandalorian being scrapped. We also have updates on other Marvel and Star Wars games.

We recently learned of plans for a new Star Wars first-person shooter which, rumour has it, would feature either The Mandalorian or a Mandalorian. Either way, it was an exciting prospect for fans, particularly after Star Wars Battlefront showed how well this Galaxy Far, Far Away mixes with FPS gameplay.

Unfortunately, following a restructuring which has led to at least 5% of EA's workforce being laid off, the Respawn-led project has been officially scrapped.

"As we’ve looked at [EA’s Star Wars studio] Respawn’s portfolio over the last few months, what’s clear is the games our players are most excited about are Jedi and Respawn’s rich library of owned brands," Laura Miele, President of EA Entertainment and Technology, said in a memo to staff.

"Knowing this, we have decided to pivot away from early development on a Star Wars FPS Action game to focus our efforts on new projects based on our owned brands while providing support for existing games."

"It’s always hard to walk away from a project," she added, "and this decision is not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion they have for the game."

On the plus side, IGN has confirmed that work will continue as planned on Black Panther, Iron Man, and the third Star Wars Jedi game, with those who had been working on the scrapped Star Wars FPS moved to those teams.

This is disappointing news, particularly for those who now find themselves unemployed, but it seems the entire video game industry is struggling at the moment. Yesterday, Sony laid off 900 staff members across its PlayStation-related studios.

Here's the full memo sent out to EA staff:

Team,

We are entertaining, inspiring, and connecting more people with more content and deeper experiences than ever before. Over the last year, we have organized our company to further empower our creative leaders to deliver our strategic priorities of entertaining massive online communities, telling blockbuster stories, and harnessing the power of community in and around our games. These actions have positioned us to build bigger, bolder experiences for hundreds of millions of players and fans around the world.

We are also leading through an accelerating industry transformation where player needs and motivations have changed significantly. Fans are increasingly engaging with the largest IP, and looking to us for broader experiences where they can play, watch, create content, and forge deeper connections. Our industry exists at the cutting edge of entertainment, and in today’s dynamic environment, we are advancing the way we work and continuing to evolve our business.

As a company full of creators and storytellers, we believe in the value of teams innovating together, and continue to learn and adopt new ways of collaborating to grow and serve our global communities. Given how and where we are working, we are continuing to optimize our global real estate footprint to best support our business. We are also sunsetting games and moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry. This greater focus allows us to drive creativity, accelerate innovation, and double down on our biggest opportunities — including our owned IP, sports, and massive online communities — to deliver the entertainment players want today and tomorrow. Lastly, we are streamlining our company operations to deliver deeper, more connected experiences for fans everywhere that build community, shape culture, and grow fandom.

In this time of change, we expect these decisions to impact approximately 5 percent of our workforce. I understand this will create uncertainty and be challenging for many who have worked with such dedication and passion and have made important contributions to our company. While not every team will be impacted, this is the hardest part of these changes, and we have deeply considered every option to try and limit impacts to our teams. Our primary goal is to provide team members with opportunities to find new roles and paths to transition onto other projects. Where that’s not possible, we will support and work with each colleague with the utmost attention, care, and respect. Communicating these impacts has already begun and will be largely completed by early next quarter.

I want to extend my appreciation to everyone who has helped contribute to EA’s ongoing story. We are a team that leans into our values to lead the future of entertainment, and I look forward to what we will create together. Thank you for all that you do.

Andrew

Let’s hope the Iron Man game shows off his rogues gallery better than the movies did. Give us The REAL Mandarin. Plus a male Ghost, Controller, Living Laser, and FIN FANG FOOM.

But...I thought Marvel Studios did no wrong...I thought Robert Downey and Iron Man were the best things they had. Now you're telling me that they didn't do Iron Man justice, and that his movies and overall presence were over-rated?

You said it yourself, "male" Ghost. Marvel Entertainment has tried tohomogenized, change, every single one of their adaptations of Marvel Comics to fit the movies, so do you really think you would get a male Ghost, or a male Taskmaster, or a white Nick Fury, or a Peter Parker that's not made to look like a bitch so he can prop up Iron Man, or Miles Morales, or anybody else? Where is this Marvel in the video game industry that has shown you that they are going to give you that?

There is one great game made with a Marvel character in the last decade, ONE, and that's Spider-Man 2018. Everything else sucks. If EA can pull off something like Star Wars Jedi, then I'll eat my words. Marvel's track record lately is spotty.

Make a damn open world Mando game where you go from planet to planet hunting bounties and doing other random tasks with pieces of the show scattered throughout

@TheShape9859 - This.

And for [frick]s sake don't make it first-person.

Totally off-topic:
@marvel72 and @mountainman, just watched the first 2 Shogun eps. It's good, great photography.

But the old one is still better, that one follows the books more closely and has that sense of discovery as we only have the information Blackthorne himself has.

Still, much better than most stuff being produced nowadays.

@Fogs - I haven't seen the original series in years, probably when it first aired, so I honestly can't remember that much.

However this series is great, don't know if it will be multi-seasons because the original series was a mini series.

@marvel72 - I'll say the pacing is much better in the old one (checked and Clavell, the book author, was a producer). The new one is a good rendition tho, so far.

@Fogs - I haven’t read the book or seen the old show so comparisons won’t be my thing just enjoying for what it is.

Sometimes it’s better to watch these adaptations without having read the book first.

I don't think it's because "the entire video game industry is struggling at the moment" though. During the pandemic a lot of studios saw rapid growth, and now that everybody stopped gaming again they don't need all the staff anymore

@bkmeijer1 - hence why they’re struggling, genius

@Miiol - I wouldn't call it struggling, nor that it affects the entire industry

Of course the industry is struggling, AAA games are crap nowadays. Then they see what Larian Studios has done with BG3 and the success they've had and all of a sudden they're worried.

I just hope Sweet Baby Inc. doesn't get their hands on this. My only fear at the moment.
