STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Hits $1.54B Worldwide; Tops THE AVENGERS & FURIOUS 7

According to a report by THR, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has just hit $1.54 billion, making it number 4 on the all-time highest grossing films list! It surpassed The Avengers, which made $1.529 billion globally, and Furious 7, which grossed $1.515 billion. Yesterday, "The Force Awakens" earned $8 million in North America, adding to its total domestic gross, which is now $750.2 million. On top of that, the film is still on track to dethrone Avatar's domestic gross of $760.5 million.

Even though the seventh Star Wars film will overtake Avatar's domestic gross either tomorrow or on Thursday, the report also adds that The Force Awakens "isn't likely to overtake Avatar ($2.78 billion) worldwide." Still, the film is consistently performing in Europe and Australia, and when it hits theaters in China on January 9th, you can expect its worldwide gross to spike dramatically.

Many are coming up with great theories about Rey's parental origin and how they require some type of “flashback” in future films. To me, SW does not require flashbacks as it’s story continuously moves forward (unless the Force allows visions of the past and future, but even then it’s very vague and requires the audience to brainstorm). Thinking about this brought me to Obi-Wan in Episodes IV and V – He simply explains the Force, Clone Wars, Anakin, Leia’s relation to Luke, that he was trained by Yoda and much more. This is a very simple storytelling device that cause for no objection, so why not continue to use it? I can totally see Luke or maybe a Force Ghost explain to Rey her parentage without any flashbacks.

That being said, I had an idea that would allow Rey to have been born many, many years before we think she was. It’s very simple, CARBONITE. Think about it – She could have been trained how to use the force as a very young girl, allowing her to survive the freezing process. She could also be the daughter of Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, someone from the Jedi council or even earlier than that! If this was the case, it’s possible she could have been freed from carbonite and someone left her on Jakku for whatever reason. Since she was so young before being frozen, it makes total sense she wouldn't remember her training or parents. Again, this is something that could be explained to her in a variety of ways instead of using flashbacks.

Anyway, this is my theory about Rey. Am I completely nuts? Let me know! Stay awesome.

Well congrats to SW.....hope it beats Avatar. I am curious what the numbers will be this weekend. If it drops by 40% again then I am skeptical about it beating Avatar even with China.

@Moneypelly

Plain and simple Rey is either the daughter of Luke or Obi's grand daughter! I really wished they would have fleshed out the secret relationship Obi had in the movies......they did touch on it in the Clone Wars cartoons.

As far as FINN he is not force sensitive IMO! And it will turn out his Lando's son.....is that racist?

Hmm so it's slowing down eh? I wonder if it'll have the legs to reach 2 billion at least.

Avatar had such a good movie because the theatre was the only place that you could see the 3D, so you had to go back if you wanted to see it again. It sure wasn't because it was a good movie.

Avatar was horrible........was the 3D experience great.....sure because it was new and it wore off! Personally I hate 3D.....! I even dread seeing BvS in IMAX 3D because we get to see it a week early.

Again I really hope SW beats out Avatar........And I hope the next Avatar is better in terms of story.

JoeMomma29 - At this rate, I'm not sure if it'll beat out Avatar. $1.3 billion is a tall order and what not.

BvS will not come close to these numbers......neither will CW, Dr. Strange, X Men, SS, or any other CBM this year.

SW has fans around the world and it has been so long since those crappy prequels came out.

@NiklanderReborn

Naw! The whole theme of SW is the Skywalker bloodline................

JoeMomma29 - Now that I can see happening.

NiklanderReborn - But at this point, the movie focused quite a bit on Rey's parents and how she kept on waiting for them to return. Sooner or later, we'll have to find out her lineage.

Also someone gave an interesting point saying the bad guys or Empire or New order are somewhat insane, they keep building the same type of mega weapon but with the same results.......

The same could be said about the good guys, maybe they feel as though force sensitive children who are strong in the force should be put on desolate desert planets so they are not detected so easily.

AVATAR was the ultimate monster overseas, crushing every single number one spot in ever country. And when i say crushhing, it means, doing 2 or 3 times as much as the former number one.

It basicly behaved abroad the way Force Awaken has been behaving domestically during the Christmas hollidays right now. It acted every day like it was a holliday.

Force Awaken will have a foreign take in the vicinity of the best Juggernaut overseas BO ($1.2B -$1.3B)...around FF7 and former pre release TITANIC foreign take.

I beleive that the only movie that could eventually take AVATAR's worlwide take is one of its sequel because granted the domestic and some of the foreign markets will decrease, 8 yearsa of increase in the expanding markets will make up for any loss.

AVATAR was already doing $200m in China when most movies, including CBM couldn't crack a tenth of it.

@jazzy4

Plus it really did not have any competition for while and it had a long run as well.

That is the only thing stopping Force Awakens.....soon their will be other movies for families to take their children to go see.

It seems Samuel L Jackson (Mace Windu), didn't really enjoy or wasn't a fan of The Force Awakens:

I really don't know if it can beat Avatar.
It's a long way to go but at the same time it's climbing fast.

Shoooot, even before Avatar's re-release it was sitting at $2,749,064,328 billion dollars only increasing a god $38+ million after it's re-release. PLUS tickets are even a "bit" more expensive than they were back in 2009 so Star Wars had it made easy for them.

Oh yeah, if anything I said above was wrong you can feel more than free to correct me. Wouldn't be the first time I messed up on Box Office numbers. lol

And ehhh, I doubt the sequels will make more than the first. The third film might have a chance but I don't see the sequel making more.

I think it'll definitely crack $2B. It's less than $500M away from that now without China and it still has strong legs. It's probably got at least another $100M in NA before it's done. That leaves less than $400M for China and the rest of the world.
