STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Director Rian Johnson Is Reportedly Lucasfilm's Top Choice To Helm EPISODE IX

Last night, Lucasfilm announced that Colin Trevorrow would no longer sit in the director's chair for Star Wars: Episode IX. Now, we're hearing that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson could take over...

On the heels of the news that Colin Trevorrow and Lucasfilm have parted ways, several reliable outlets have weighed in on which filmmakers are on the studio's radar to replace him as director on the still untitled Star Wars: Episode IX.

Predictably enough, the name at the top of the list is Rian Johnson, who is said to have earned the trust of Kathleen Kennedy and co. with his stellar work on The Last Jedi. Plus, although Johnson wasn't directly involved in crafting the story for Episode IX, one would assume he was part of a conversation or two regarding the general direction the plot was heading in.

The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams' name has also come up, but there doesn't seem to be as much behind that rumor.

Chances are we'll hear a few more names bandied about before anything is finalised, so keep an eye out for updates. In the meantime, let us know who you'd most like to see take over directing duties on Star Wars: Episode IX in the usual place.

Not surprising in the slightest. Word on the street is Lucasfilms is very happy with Last Jedi, so it makes sense for them to try and get him back.

@MrDandy - The marketing hasn't made it look like they're happy with it, but this is encouraging news.

@BestAtWhatIDo - I think at this point they'd ejust trying not to give too much away.

@BestAtWhatIDo - The marketing is almost identical to TFA's. Were LF not confident with that one? Were you disappointed back in 2015?

@MrDandy - Where did you hear that word on the street? The same people that said BvS got a standing ovation?

I wish Stephen Spielberg would direct a star wars film.

@BillGrave - he would be my pick for the Boba Fett film.

@RancidBane - I want neil bloomkamp or the russos for that,

@BillGrave - speilburg I think could deliver a really cool western vibe to it. But I like the Russo Idea you have.

@BillGrave - Spielberg apparently directed the Light Saber fight between Obi-wan and Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. That went on forever and was ridiculously over the top.

Speilberg would have been better for The Phantom Menace since he does a great job with kids.
James Cameron should have directed Attack of the Clones. His love story would have been more believable.
Peter Jackson would have been great on Revenge of the Sith.

@RancidBane - Joe Johnston (Rocketeer, CA First Avenger) has said he wants to do Boba Fett. That was years ago. He could certainly do it, but would it be too bright in tone considering his other stuff?

It seems like in this day and age, audiences wouldn't settle for less than an R-rated, Tarantino-esque Boba Fett thriller. The Disney Lucasfilm tone is going to disappoint everyone.

Saying that, maybe they should give Drew Goddard a shout for Boba Fett because he wouldn't be afraid to subvert expectations.

@JasonLives - Speak for yourself, that was one of the best saber fights in my opinion.

I agree with the rest though.

I think this bodes well for Last Jedi. I don't think Trevaro has been the director of 9 since it was announced that they were doing a rewrite on the script. So let's have this happen.

I doubt JJ Abrams is returning. After Force Awakens he said he wanted to take a break from doing franchise films and concentrate on original projects. I don't see him returning.

@MrDandy - I don't mind that either. His franchise films have been fun (Mission: Impossible 3 is pretty awesome), but I want to see more projects like Super 8, or involved with more mystery projects like Cloverfield. Even writing another movie like Joy Ride would be cool.

J.J. Abrams, original?
Heh.

@Battabing -

Are we forgetting Alien, Fringe, Lost, and more exist or are we just pretending they don't to fit this particular narrative?

@MrDandy - I loved fringe... That show was so good.

@MrDandy - The first 3 season she of Lost were fantastic. I was a fan through till the end, but the quality certainly dipped. Though I can understand if the mystery behind everything turned people off. Loved that show though. And I caught up literally just in time to watch the finale (though on DVR just after it aired by my choosing).

@MrDandy -

None of his tentpole films have been original.

@Battabing - What wasn't original about Mission Impossible 3? And Super 8 may have been inspired tonally by the likes of Goonies and ET, but it was no more stealing than Stranger Things. It's plot was still original.

MrDandy - 9/6/2017, 4:01 PM
@MosquitoFarmer - Yeah, I didn't even watch it until the end. The show went downhill after Abrams left the project.

@MrDandy - I've never lost hope in Star Wars or this trilogy. But, you gotta admit The Force Awakens as a mess, especially when you think about it. I recommend this video. It spells it all out.
I wish JJ Abrams had never been let near Star Wars Episode VII.

@ImmovableForce - Oh look, someone trying to cash in on the red letter media schitck. Cool...

Unfortunately I already listened to RLM's review (they liked it but had concerns regarding franchising). I really don't need to listen to a nasally whining teenager for an hour.
