STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Tracking For Potentially The Lowest Opening Of The Current Trilogy

The new Star Wars movies have been a hit for Disney, but despite all those record-breaking ticket sales, it sounds like The Rise of Skywalker could have a softer opening that previous instalments...

Both Fandango and Atom have reported record ticket sales for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but that may not translate into an opening quite as big as previous instalments in the trilogy.

According to Box Office Pro, the finale of the "Skywalker Saga" is currently tracking to open between $185 million and $225 million. That puts it well below The Force Awakens' $248 million and potentially beneath The Last Jedi's $220 million. It's not like this is a colossal dip, but it may signal a lack of interest in the last chapter of one of the biggest franchises of all-time.

Honestly, you'd think The Rise of Skywalker would be even bigger than Avengers: Endgame, but it seems like some of Lucasfilm's creative decisions have soured a lot of moviegoers on the series.

It's entirely feasible that things will change over the coming weeks, but the final trailer has now been released, and it felt like the buzz surrounding that faded away in a matter of days. Whatever happens with The Rise of Skywalker, we know Disney is going back to the drawing board with the Star Wars franchise and plans to give it a break on the big screen for at least the next few years.

Are you guys planning to see the movie this December?

Good thing they are taking a break from movies. What they need to do is
Focus on stand alones and get filmakers willing to sign on for full trilogies
No yearly releases, Star Wars is not ready from that, wait at least 2 to 3 years.
Get out of the timeframe of the skywalker saga

Bu bu but its pre sales tickets are higher than Endgame! Who am I to believe??

Given the utter dumpster fire TLJ was Im going with dismal numbers. Theres no salvaging the trilogy as a whole but maybe they will learn something for next time and we get something better right from the start.

@TheBigR - I actually read the only reason it beat Avengers is because the pre ticket sales in retrospect are actually really low, but because more and more people are using them it’s actually pretty easy to beat “previous” records because of it!

Not surprising at all. Disney has effectively run this series into the ground. I shudder at the thought, but I can honestly seeing Disney planning a total reboot of the series in 5 years or so.

Not surprised. Disney made these trilogies as “one and done’s”.

Can't wait for people to start blaming Johnson for this, instead of how JJ literally reuses everything that was in the original trilogy, now including the Emperor. Of course, the fans don't care, because the fans prefer nostalgia over originality.
Thankfully that's not the case with most people, as we can see with the specific estimations.

@OuzoPowerMan - It's funny, because to me JJ and Rian ultimately ended up delivering a near perfect one-two punch of making me not want to watch the third movie, regardless of who was going to do it. And in my eyes they managed to fail at both nostalgia and originality to get to that point.

@WilliamCipher @OuzoPowerMan - Throw in Kathleen Kennedy in the mix and you got the crappy trinity of Star Wars.

@Kyos - JJ = An honest try to punch me in the face, but missed. Rian = total sucker punch, cheap shot to the back of my head when I wasn't looking.

@OuzoPowerMan - Hey now! I think most fans of SW agree they both suck.

That would still be a terrific opening... Like one of the top ten openings of all time.

"The film is currently tracking to have one of the ten best opening weekends of all time, which likely means people just aren't that interested"

"Honestly, you'd think The Rise of Skywalker would be even bigger than Avengers: Endgame"
Is there anyone who actually thought this would be bigger than Endgame? The Force Awakens made all that money because of nostalgia and the 10 year gap between the last SW movie. The Star Wars brand is big, but these days the MCU brand is bigger.
It may be a close race in the US, but Rise of Skywalker doesn't have a chance against Endgame worldwide. Not even close
Kyos
Kyos - 10/28/2019, 4:54 AM
@WilliamCipher - Worldwide? At this point?I really don't see any chance. Ep IX would need to double TLJ's result to come close to Endgame. It'd need to make as much more than TFA than TLJ did less than TFA. How would that happen? Why would that happen?

Now it depends on Reviews will it be a 1, 2, 3,
4 or 5 Star movie with critics and audience. looking forward to it either way :)

How is that even possible with the way presale tickets have been selling?
DalekCraigWasson
DalekCraigWasson - 10/28/2019, 6:57 AM
@Ha1frican - Presales are nothing. Solo got higher presales than Black Panther but look how their actual box office turned out. With more and more assigned seating in theaters now, people want their tickets, and place in the theater, earlier and earlier. People who buy opening weekend tickets are also usually fans who want to make sure they have a place. It says nothing about how well the actual film will do.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 10/28/2019, 2:30 PM
@DalekCraigWasson - overall yes but this is specifically talking about the opening which presale is a massive part of. It doesn’t speak to the long tail but if it’s breaking all the presale records of the rest of the series having a lackluster opening doesn’t really add up

I really think that this is gonna pull a reverse on the box office. Starting low, but actually having pretty good second, third, etc week (if the reviews are even slightly good)
