STAR WARS: Will GAME OF THRONES Showrunners David Benioff & D.B. Weiss One Day Return To Scrapped Trilogy?

A few years ago, Game of Thrones shrowunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were attached to take charge of a Star Wars trilogy, but ditched it for Netflix. So, would they return to a Galaxy Far, Far Away?

Not too long ago, Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were set to head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away to write a new Star Wars trilogy. The news broke in 2018, but the duo exited their deal with Disney and Lucasfilm the following year to create a slate of projects for Netflix instead.

Doing the rounds to promote Metal Lords, Weiss was asked by ComicBook.com (via SFFGazette.com) if he and Benioff remain open to potentially working on that Star Wars project again.

"Right at the moment, I'm so excited about Metal Lords coming out, and there's also The Three-Body Problem that we're working on and, between those two things, that accounts for about 150% of my attention span," Weiss explained. Asked if their focus could change in the coming years, Weiss chose his words carefully, and joked: "I manage expectations on my mental capacity."

It's thought this trilogy would have been set in the Old Republic era, but Lucasfilm has seemingly shifted focus to the High Republic era instead. There's been speculation that "creative differences" led to Benioff and Weiss' departure, while some fans remain convinced the negative reaction to the Game of Thrones finale resulted in Lucasfilm changing tact.

Either way, the Star Wars franchise's future on the big screen remains uncertain. Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron appears to have stalled, but we know Kevin Feige and Taika Waititi are working on separate projects. How far along they are is hard to say as they appear to still be in the writing stage.

Would you like to see the Game of Thrones showrunners return to a Galaxy Far, Far Away?

I've been re-watching the final 3 seasons of GoT recently, and still think it wasn't that bad.

The production value and performances are still the best we've ever had on cable television, so in comparing that to their writing, it's easy to say their writing was weak and rushed. They could have easily fleshed out the last 2 seasons and ended it's run with 10 seasons. I'm sure HBO wouldn't have minded fitting the bill as they were quick to rush on 2 different spin offs.

Benioff's writing credits are also quite good when you look at them (X-men Origins: Wolverine aside) and Stay is one of my favourites films. Can't really say much about Weiss.

They wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to Star Wars. I feel "passed already, that has"

@UniqNo - It makes more sense when you rewatch the series in full it doesn't seem as rushed as people think. But either way i think people would have been disappointed one way or another lol it was a no win situation everyone had their own ending in their head and it was never going to meet expectations i think.

@19Batman84 - Season's 1 to 6 were near perfect, but you can feel the rush of storytelling in season’s 7 and 8 (especially), not helped by their consistently reduced episode counts.

The passage of time in between some scenes were not easy to establish, especially when you see certain characters showing up in different places within the same episode.

The Nightking stuff was anticlimactic (though the action was good…when you could see it) …ending again with a hivemind cliché and no further insight into what made the white walkers so mysterious.

Dany's turn happened too quick for the audience to fully invest to the change after having spent the previous seasons building herself up, being a liberator and even stating she "doesn't wish to be queen of the ashes". Only for her to go on and do just that within 5 episodes. I get that she lost her “children” and Messandei in the episode before, but we didn’t see her dwell on it long enough. I can only compare it to Breaking Bad where we clearly saw Walter’s descent over time. I’m ok with her story ending by going full Mad Queen, but they could have fleshed that out so much more.

Her romance with Snow was also only shown briefly before he told her of his lineage… which I feel could/should have been delayed a bit longer for us to feel the difficulty to come in their flourishing relationship. I didn’t buy their love at all.

The audience went from empathizing and understanding her to being “WTF”. We didn’t take that journey into descent with her. She was portrayed as a jealous outsider with a superiority complex from the start of season 8 that just kept on losing ground. We saw her battle with the choice to burn King’s Landing for literally 49 seconds.

I still like the series overall and agree it would still have been divisve. It ended stronger than people say, but It really could have gone for 10 seasons to make us care more.

@UniqNo - You make some very good points i agree with you on those for sure they should have made it 10 seasons to flesh everything out more for sure it was going where it ended up but they just made it to rushed for certain areas lol For the war of winterfell i rewatched it recently on hbo and they brightened it so you can actually see whats happening now lol so it made cooler for sure
