STAR WARS: Will The Writers Guild of America Strike Have An Impact On Future Movies And TV Shows?

There's a lot of uncertainty in Hollywood right now thanks to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, but how worried should you be about the many upcoming Star Wars movies and TV shows on the horizon?

There had been talk of it happening for several months, but the Writers Guild of America is officially on strike with no end currently in sight. If this strike lasts as long as the last one in 2007 - 2008 (100 days), then we can expect some major delays to a number of upcoming TV shows and movies, but what about Star Wars

On that front, we have good and bad news (via SFFGazette.com).

When it comes to this Galaxy Far, Far Away's small screen offerings, TV shows like Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew are well into post-production. Andor showrunner, Tony Gilroy, has also confirmed that he finished season 2's final script shortly before the strike began. On-set rewrites won't be allowed, but as he has a clear vision for the project, that's unlikely to matter.

The Acolyte, which is still shooting, could be in trouble as that production is based in the UK and writers there are standing in solidarity with their American counterparts. We don't know whether the show has completed scripts or not, but if so, it may be largely unaffected.

In terms of animation, Tales of the Jedi and The Bad Batch could face similar issues, though The Mandalorian season 4 may be safe to move forward seeing as Jon Favreau has said it's already written! Then again, if any changes need to be made following the show's third batch of episodes and Ahsoka, this strike will put the brakes on that quite sharply.

Where Star Wars is most likely to suffer is in theaters. Steven Knight was recently hired to replace Damon Lindelof as the writer of the movie revolving around Daisy Ridley's Rey Skywalker but will have been forced to down tools. That script was supposedly six weeks from being finished three weeks ago, so with weeks left of work to do, pre-production is going to face problems preparing when they don't have a finished story.

Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau also can't have done much work on their upcoming Star Wars movie, though we doubt James Mangold planned to begin writing his project about the first-ever Jedi quite yet, anyway. Still, these delays could ultimately have an impact on release dates depending on how long the strike lasts.

It's an uncertain time, that's for sure, but this franchise could really do without any further delays seeing how long it's already been absent from theaters!

I certainly hope so! So tired of crap and mediocre stories and characters coming out of Lucasfilm. It's time to put on the breaks and do a total reassessment of how they are completely diminishing the brand name.

If anybody remembers the 2007 strike, it absolutely has an effect on shows. Sure scripts may be done, but you can forget about any kind of revisions or edits.

@Supercat6376 - The difference between a scripted television show having writers and not having writers? Pretty big difference.

Kinda doubt it. Think Skeleton Crew, Acolyte, Andor and Ahsoka are already written, so I don't expect any delays there.

And with four shows already on the horizon, I wouldn't mind having to wait longer for new seasons of Tales of the Jedi, The Bad Batch and The Mandalorian (and Lando?).

Come to think of it, i might be old fashioned here, but im guessing the lack of the williams score suite is hurting these shows.

For example obi wan. I cringe at how terrible that show is, i was excited with the first trailer. And the only thing that couldve saved that for me is the old music, it being about obiwan.

The 2008 writers strike ground production to a halt, and this one will, too, as it should. Time to catch up on some old shows and movies!

Not that I'm saying the Writer's Strike is a good thing for things already in production, but honestly it wouldn't kill us to wait another few years for a Star Wars movie. 2019 wasn't that long ago. There was 10 year gap between Revenge of the Sith & Force Awakens. Let the D+ shows have some breathing room and time to simmer in our minds before dropping another big screen project. Take the time needed to make sure it's a quality product and not rush it out the door to meet some arbitrary release date.

I'm really hoping it does.

Whatever they're paying the current collective of writers is too much.

I say this as a writer, myself.

@SheepishOne - writing a blog and being a union writer are two different things

@cham2119 - I write fiction, but you're right, I'm not a union writer.

Though my comment was more to criticize the current level of quality in film and tv/streaming than anything.

Outside of A24 (which can get a bit self indulgent) and a few notable exceptions, studios have been playing it so incredibly safe these last few years that a lot of what makes it to theaters feels like it's written by AI, anyway. And with streaming...there are maybe one or two ongoing shows that I make it a point to keep up with. And anecdotally, most people I know feel the same. Which is wild, considering how oversaturated the market has become.

@SheepishOne - that dip in quality is less about the writing and more about studios rushing projects into production to meet their content quota. So many of the issues in storytelling that you see in the industry are a direct result of profit being the only goal they do not care if the story is satisfying as long as it effects their quarterly earnings in a timely fashion. That would be why the most successful or at least well known creatives are the ones that churn out product after product regardless of it's quality ie Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rimes etc. what people really need to wake up and realize is regardless of whether it's good or bad each show has hundreds of crew working on it and we don't make nearly the amount of money that the higher ups and executives do in helping to bring their project to fruition. much more most of us live paycheck to paycheck just like anyone else and all this shut down has and will do for us is bring us closer or back to poverty. We are still supportive though because we understand that the real problem is the companies whose only goal is to maximize their profit margins regardless of the toll that takes on their workforce.

Depends on how long the strike goes. If it goes longer than 2007 then everything is going to be hit. Get ready for a Star Wars themed reality tv show lol
