THE HUNT FOR BEN SOLO Director Says It's "Insane" That Disney Wouldn't Make Adam Driver's STAR WARS Movie

Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has criticised Disney for scrapping Adam Driver's Star Wars movie, The Hunt for Ben Solo, without even asking about the budget or any other details.

Late last year, we learned that Star Wars sequel trilogy star Adam Driver and filmmaker Steven Soderbergh had been quietly developing The Hunt for Ben Solo.

The movie, written by Scott Z. Burns, received the stamp of approval from Lucasfilm but was ultimately scrapped by Disney's Bob Iger and Alan Bergman.

The Hunt for Ben Solo came close to being made, and was reportedly ready to shoot when Lucasfilm took it to Disney to get a green light. However, for the first time in the Star Wars studio's history, the House of Mouse turned down a project ready to begin production.

The movie was set to reveal that Kylo Ren had somehow survived his run-in with Emperor Palpatine. For some reason, Iger and Bergman couldn't get their heads around the notion of resurrection in the Star Wars franchise. Fans have made their disappointment known, but so far, there's nothing to suggest that Disney and new Lucasfilm President Dave Filoni will try again with the movie.

During a recent interview with BKMAG (via SFFGazette.com), Soderbergh was asked about the apparent frustration former Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy expressed during her exit interview.

"No, it was no surprise that she was frustrated. We were all frustrated," the filmmaker said. "You know, that was two and a half years of free work for me and Adam [Driver], and Rebecca Blunt. When Adam and I discussed him talking about it publicly, I said, 'Look, do not editorialize or speculate about the why. Just say what happened, because all we know is what happened.'"

"The stated reason was 'We don’t think Ben Solo could be alive.' And that was all we were told. And so there’s nothing to do about it, you know, except move on. And as I posted, I’d kind of made the movie in my head, and just felt bad that nobody else was going to get to see it. I thought the conversation was strictly going to be a practical one—where they go, what is this going to cost?"

"And I had a really good answer for that. But it never even got to that point. It’s insane. We’re all very disappointed," Soderbergh concluded.

Driver previously said that he had "unfinished business" with Kylo Ren after the character found redemption and died in the closing moments of 2019's The Rise of Skywalker.

So, he enlisted Soderbergh, who teamed with screenwriter Rebecca Blunt (Logan Lucky) to crack the story. Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) then started work on the screenplay, and they pitched the movie to Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy, Cary Beck, and Dave Filoni, who reportedly "loved the idea."

Kylo Ren emerged from the divisive Star Wars sequel trilogy as one of its most popular characters, and fans were devastated when he was killed off. We wouldn't bank on The Hunt for Ben Solo happening, but stranger things have happened, and it is a new era for Disney and Lucasfilm.

Star Wars is dead

@quas95 - it’s not what it used to be, but it’s not dead. Dead is when there’s nothing coming out soon or even on the horizon and in production hell. Star Wars have at least two movies coming out and a tv show.

@quas95 - Although, I would gladly let Steven Sorderbergh try to revive it.

Internet criticism of the sequel trilogy scared Disney

@Inktown03 - The sequel trilogy lost over a billion dollars between episode 7 and 9; it wasn't just the internet.

@TheJok3r - I’m not quite sure what figures you’re referring to. Each sequel in the trilogy made less than the previous one that came out but force awakens alone made 550 million. The movies were still profitable but are you referring to each movie making less than its predecessor? It didn’t lose money it never had, just didn’t make as much. For instance, Justice league I don’t think made a profit but both man of steel and Batman v Superman did .

@epc1122 - "are you referring to each movie making less than its predecessor ?"

Yes, which isn't something that happens if the majority of people like something.

@TheJok3r - that’s not necessarily true. Streaming has really changed the way people view movies and tv. While I do think the sequel trilogy had a very mixed reception, the prequel trilogy was also met with mixed reception and overtime, people now think fondly of the prequels. Unfortunately, there’s high expectations with these movies and it’s hard to meet those initial expectations, but just making money is not the only criteria . Rather, it shouldn’t be the only criteria. Originally people hated the last Jedi and I think now it’s people’s favorite of the sequel trilogy. The first one is considered a good start, the last Jedi people generally like now and it’s the third one that people generally don’t like. So 2/3 are looked at more fondly now. In 15 years people will say episode 11 is terrible compared to episode 9 lol. People are never happy lol 😂

@Bucky74 - Yup.
And everything Luke did and sacrificed for was pointless. Also, Anakin's turn back to the good side at the very end was meaningless.

epc1122 - 2/19/2026, 12:26 AM
@Bucky74 - I can see Ben solo having a kid that he didn’t know about during his time as Kylo. Anakins great grandchild. Rey and him or her can bond over being the last skywalker’s. The last bloodline descendent will have to come to grips that Kylo did horrible things but Rey will make sure they know there was still good in him.
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/19/2026, 12:30 AM
@Feralwookiee - it wasn’t pointless. There was still good times but like life, it goes in cycles. Luke let Darth Vader die in peace and be able to go to the afterlife in “heaven” instead of hell. Luke helped his father have some sort of redemption so it wasn’t for nothing. It would be nice if all the hate and suffering ended but unfortunately, there are some people who always want power. It doesn’t take away from past stories. Well I should say, it doesn’t have to take away from past stories.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 2/19/2026, 6:16 AM
@epc1122 - Anakin was the chosen one who was supposed to destroy the Sith and he did. Luke gives up his weapon and is willing to give up his life, which sparks what little humanity is left in Vader who finally turns against the Emperor killing him.

The Disney fan fiction movies totally undo all that because...SOMEHOW, Palpatine returned. 🙄
It totally nullifies everything Luke and Anakin sacrificed for and completely takes away from the original movies.

Just an awful moronic lazy "storytelling" choice.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/19/2026, 8:14 AM
@Feralwookiee - It's such a disruptive flow watching 6 and 7 back-to-back too. They're celebrating the freedom of the galaxy and then SOMEHOW the galaxy is being oppressed by the first order and there's rebels again.

Like sure, epc1122's right, life is like that and it's not unrealistic for this to have happened in 30 years but the story flow is just terrible. It's bad storytelling to do that.

Watching episodes 3 and 4 back-to-back now that's good storytelling. Episode 3 sets up episode 4's natural progression of events a decade later. The Empire take over, Luke and Leia are put into hiding,, Anakin becomes Darth Vader, then years later the Empire is still in charge , Darth Vader's still Darth Vader Luke and Leia are beginning to come out of hiding as Rebels etc. It flows.

It's like poetry.
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/19/2026, 8:54 AM
@Feralwookiee - I don’t agree. Luke still let Anakin come back and have an honorable death and that to me is the most important. It’s the story about Luke redeeming Anakin. To me it was always that part of the story that connected with so the sequel trilogy wasn’t a big letdown. I found it interesting that Anakins grandchild turned bad and it’s almost like a Vicious never ending cycle. It’s almost like alcoholism running in the family. Also, if you dont like the sequels, in your Star Wars marathon, just stop at return of the Jedi, it’s not that big a deal. Sorry to break it to you, but it’s all “fan fiction”.
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/19/2026, 9:01 AM
@ObserverIO - while to a point I agree, the scroll in the beginning helps. I haven’t done a Star Wars marathon in awhile so I’m not sure if it really takes away that in episode six the Jedi win and then it goes to seven where things are bad again. There are also shows to fill in the gaps. From 3 to four there were also shows but it was an added bonus whereas between 6 and 7 it might be more essential viewing to fill in the gaps.

It really is strange that the Disney higher ups like Bob Iger couldn’t see a way for Ben Solo to be alive in a space fantasy franchise like SW where there are witches , force ghosts and aliens…

Actually scratch that , it shouldn’t really be a surprise since they are execs after all which just shows their lack of imagination hence they should leave those type of decisions to the creatives.

Also it makes me wonder just how many of the stalled and/or shelved SW projects like Rogue Squadron didn’t happen because of Disney rather then Kathleen Kennedy who got the blame for that?.

Anyway , I’m hoping this is able to be resurrected under this new Disney & Lucasfilm regime in which they can bring back Adam Driver and have a truly stellar filmmaker in Steven Soderbergh tell the story he wants to tell with the character who was my favorite in the sequel trilogy & felt his redemption was one of the better elements of the mediocrity that was TROS!!.

@DENNISsystem - fair enough

I actually liked the chemistry and dynamic between the 3 leads aswell but the inclusion of Palpatine (as great as Ian McDiarmid was) brought the film down for me.

Hate the sequel trilogy but everything about this movie sounds great. This could be the sci-fi version of The Fugitive and out of all the new Star Wars characters i think Kylo Ren was one of the most interesting and redeemable.

Also the title makes it seem like a Fugitive-esque tale perhaps of others looking for Ben Solo so he could be brought to justice for his crimes as Kylo Ren…

However given Soderbergh’s involvement , it probably wouldn’t have been as conventional as that but I imagine moreso the title having spiritual meaning as Ben goes on for the hunt for who he is now given the events of The Rise of Skywalker which could have been interesting to see since we rarely get stories about a character after their redemptive turn I feel.

I’m honestly imagining something like “Zuko Alone” for people familiar with ATLA and if so then I would be down for that!!.

Would be awesome. The New Republic Wants Kylo REN because he killed General Solo. The Empirial Remnant wants him because the warlord who captures and kills him would get more Credibility over every other imperial. And Ben trying to find his place in the galaxy. Have Chewbacca and a newbie dark side user chasing him down and I’d buy that ticket.

Disney had a problem with this, but no problem bringing Palpatine back and shitting all over the OG characters and isolating their core fanbase! 🙄 Iger is as bad as KK. Sad. Does anybody in charge actually understand the Skywalker saga or paid any attention to what’s come before?!?!

Ben Solo on the run and hiding is way more interesting than Kylo Ren. With new Lucasfilm leadership and a new Disney CEO, they should all sit down again and discuss green lighting this film. Especially since there's fan hype for it. Easy money left on the table right now and it being Soderbergh should have been a no-brainer.

MuadDib - 2/18/2026, 11:17 PM
I’m glad they didn’t green light it. Everything about the sequel trilogy was pure garbage, and we’re already getting more Rey unfortunately. I for one am happy we dont also have to deal with more Ben. The sooner we can leave behind the sequel trilogy the better. What a complete cluster fluck of bad decisions one after another lead to the death spiral SW is currently in.

We should get an animated version of Duel of the Fates that’s explicitly marketed as “World Between Worlds.” Rewrite the script, tighten it up, get the gang back together (Trevorrow included), and go wild.

That version of Episode IX wasn’t perfect, but had it been made the sequel trilogy wouldn’t be as hated. The original trilogy is the return of Anakin Skywalker. The prequel trilogy is the fall of Anakin Skywalker. Any sequel trilogy should be the legacy of Anakin Skywalker. Duel of the Fates would’ve imperfectly dealt with that. If it was made into an animated movie? Fans could quietly “choose their canon ending,” Disney might get a Best Animated Film Oscar, they could consider an animated coda in the form of The Hunt for Ben Solo, and all will be well.

Until someone screws it up again.

It’s like poetry, it rhymes. 🙂
