J.J. Abram's Super 8 has defied the odds by hitting the top spot this weekend at the box office, earning $37 million compared to the $25 million of last week's box office winner, X-Men: First Class (which is now approaching $100 million domestically). While Super 8 didn't have that strong of an opening, many of the reviews from both critics and audiences are praising the film. Access Hollywood has the details below...

Hollywood’s summer box-office streak has cooled a bit with a $37 million opening weekend for J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi tale Super 8.

Super 8 bumped off the previous weekend’s No. 1 movie, the comic-book prequel X-Men: First Class, which slipped to second-place with $25 million. First Class raised its domestic total to $98.9 million.

Both Super 8 and X-Men: First Class are out now at your local theater!

250 to 300 million worldwide is considered bombing?? Lol
Hellsing
Hellsing - 6/12/2011, 10:12 AM
well yes if it does make 250 it would be considered a bomb, maybe not by us but studio standards. Blockbusters need to double there initial budget to be lablled so if FC makes 300+ then its perfectly fine, you can't lable as "failure". Then it has blu ray and every thing else which usually boosts profit so its a bit early to label it a failure

CaptainAmerica - 6/12/2011, 10:18 AM
Especially with X-Men films that usually make about 300-450 million total. First Class has already made 173 Million worldwide(budget was 160), it'll need to get to 300-350 Million to ensure a sequel but 250 won't make it a bomb.

kylum616 - 6/12/2011, 10:47 AM
but in all cases it wont make as much as the last 3 movies and that might worry the studios and even if it does make 300m most studios amim for it to make back double its buddet for witch this movie is 160m
CaptainAmerica
CaptainAmerica - 6/12/2011, 11:24 AM
It already made 176 I'm pretty sure it will double in a month.

First Class just passed a $220M mark worldwide after one week. Hardly a box office bomb.

not surprising when the last two x-men films are pretty shit.

hellsing & kylum616 are both correct studios like to get their budget + double what it cost to make to be considered a massive hit.

i reckon it'll be lucky to make $480,000,000,i think $400,000,000 max.

160 million x 2 = 320 million. First Class is at 220 million in under 10 days. Bring on the sequel :)

You can probably use "Wolverine" as your benchmark, although with only one returning star and a slightly smaller budget it may have the advantage. Still, we know Fox plans on making a sequel it it, and it made $373m worldwide. If First Class can match that, then a sequel should be coming. If it comes in well below that, then a sequel is much more questionable.

it'll go down even more next week with the release of the green lantern.

$220,000,000 not bad,its made $60,000,000 profit only $260,000,000 for the studio to be really super happy.

As another point of reference, Thor sat at just under $350m after its second domestic weekend (while having three weekends internationally.) it has since made $80m more, with maybe another $20m at most left in the tank. So obviously the lion's share of the profits have already been made after the first 10 days. The X-men are performing similarly, although with less strong of a hold.

The question is how much of XMFC's foreign dollars have been taken in? Has it opened in all territories yet? I know Thor still has Japan coming in July.

X-Men: First Class ranked second with an estimated $25 million, retreating 55 percent. That was the second-smallest percentage drop yet for an X-Men, behind X2: X-Men United (53 percent) and ahead of the first X-Men (57 percent). It was also a marked improvement over X-Men Origins: Wolverine (69 percent) and X-Men: The Last Stand (67 percent). Still, First Class's $98.9 million ten-day tally trailed all of its predecessors, and the disparity was only exacerbated in terms of estimated attendance. This poor film is gonna make the least (domestically) of any X-men movie.

im suprised that x-men dropped so much, the reviews were good the movie was good but it didn't have holding power.

this year is very weird, well reviews films do well but not great, and they didn't have great holds also.i doubt x men will even reach wolverines final gross which is a pity

"Super 8" is a boring, schmaltzy, anti-climactic, unoriginal, disposable sci-fi/action movie. If you like this genre, save your money and go see "Thor" and "X-Men." "Super 8" is simply "Goonies," "ET," "Close Encounters," and "Cloverfield-lite" lumped together. It drags on for well over an hour before you get to see "the monster," which is so obscured by darkness and frantic movements that you can hardly make it out. Only until the very end do you get a head-shot which is a giant let down because "it" is a wimpy version of "Cloverfield" monster.

Even worse is that Spielberg, as usual, makes the gaggle of cutesy kid geniuses save the day and makes the adults look like nudniks without the grey matter to figure out wants happening right under their noses. I could go on but it would only frustrate me over the money I lost.

Movie critics nationally gave this crap good reviews (3 stars). Most were the same folks who over-criticized "Thor" and "X-Men." Makes no sense unless you consider the "Spielberg" money, power, and influence factor. This guy's had it. It's about time he retires on the billions he's bilked from hardworking movie fans. Also, the overrated "Abrams" should be flogged for riding the coattails of this drivel.

First Class is set to make $150M to $160M in North America and $180M to $190M internationally for a total of $330M to $350M world wide....is that a bomb?

@cgrass5150 Just so you know, I love all four of those movies you used to describe Super 8. :D

Honestly though, I LOVED Super 8. I grew up watching the Goonies and Close Encounters, and this movie brought me back to those days. I really see this becoming an instant classic. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of any of these movies, which in all honestly, is anyone who grew up in the 80's and 90's... or movie hipsters. :/

Super 8 is a beautiful film. Made in the good ol days, when Blockbusters weren't forgotten the second you left the theater.

I saw 1s class last night it was a very good movie and nowhere near a bomb. If Super 8 did'nt have Abram's and Speilberg involved with it it would'nt be this big.I think over time Super 8 will become one of those classic annoying summer block buster's cut from the same mold as Independence day, and The day after tommorow. We all said 1st Class was going to SUCK and then it come's out and it's great, so everybody come's in hear and praises it and say it's such a good movie. Then Super 8 come's out and and nock's it off and now there are people bashing 1st Class. I dont understand what's going on in this crazy place?
