Sydney Sweeney's BARBARELLA Remake Eyes Edgar Wright To Direct And A Writer With Superhero Experience

The critical and commercial success of movies like Anyone But You and Immaculate has made it easy for Sydney Sweeney to move on from Madame Web, and it looks like her Barbarella remake is now taking shape at Sony Pictures.

Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) reports that Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Last Night in Soho director Edgar Wright is officially in talks to direct, with Jane Goldman, and her daughter Honey, eyed to pen the screenplay. The former will be best known to many of you for her work on comic book adaptations such as Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service

If everything works out, Jane and Honey will co-write the script with Wright.

Sweeney will play Barbarella but remains one of Hollywood's busiest rising stars; as for Wright, he's prepping The Running Man reboot starring her Anyone But You co-star Glen Powell, so this movie is still a long way off from reaching theaters.

"Wright has been eyeing the project for some time," the trade explains, "taking a meeting with Sweeney right after it was first announced but only committed to develop the project as something he would potentially direct."

Talking about the movie back in March, Sweeney said, "I mean, Barbarella is just such a fun character to explore. She really just embraces her femininity and her sexuality, and I love that. She uses sex as a weapon and I think it’s such an interesting way into a sci-fi world. I’ve always wanted to do sci-fi. So we’ll see what happens."

"To me, [Madame Web] was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony," the actress noted in a separate interview. "Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone but You. I was able to get Barbarella."

Barbarella is a fictional character created by French comic book writer Jean-Claude Forest. She first appeared in the French comic Barbarella, serialized in V Magazine in 1962 before later being published as a graphic novel.

The character is a futuristic space adventurer and interstellar agent from the 41st century. She navigates various planets and encounters strange beings and situations, often depicted in a highly sexualized and psychedelic manner.

Barbarella gained international fame with the 1968 film adaptation directed by Roger Vadim, starring Jane Fonda in the titular role. The movie, though not a huge success upon release, has since become a cult classic, known for its campy style, erotic themes, and iconic visuals.

She is becoming overexposed. She is going to flame out quickly if she is not careful.

@Forthas - Doubtful. Overexposure is apparently the selling point, regardless of whether you like her or not.

@The1st - Tell that to Jennifer Lawrence who has literally accused of also being "everywhere" the last decade. Don't see why there would be an exception with Sweeney. It's borderline the same situation.

@NinnesMBC - I agree with you, however Jennifer Lawrence was one of those actresses presumed to have had real talent. Her career does seem to be on the ropes but I would compare her more to Hilary Swank given they have both won Oscars before the flame out. Now you don't hear from them as much.

I have a feeling 10-20 years down the road shes gonna play victim to playing oversexposed characters throughout her career. Multiples directors, producers, costars are gonna get the blame except her. 😂

@BeNice123 - That's typically how it goes: Women sow their wild oats when they're young, then complain for the rest of their lives how sowing said oats ruined their lives.

@TK420 - Are you talking about the women that were blackballed out of the industry because they wouldn't [frick] their producers or directors? Or the ones that stood up for themselves on set and were labeled "difficult?"

The premise of the character doesn’t really interest me too much but the creative team sure does so I’ll check it out if/when it happens most likely…

Given Wright might be at the helm , it might have a cheeky tone which could work given the nature of the character though I hope he does keep the eroticism intact (for obvious reasons lol).

Edgar Wright is also working on a different project, that's also being written by the same person doing this script, called "The Chain" so add that one too to the list of his schedule besides The Running Man reboot.

From my understanding the biggest flaw in the original Jane Fonda led film wasn't the acting or the sets/visuals but the humor and the weak story that became dull after the first scenes of the movie. So they are gonna have to tread on that one carefully if they want it to be better than the first movie. Wright's last movie, Late Night in Soho, fumbled near the ending due to the writing.

Studios are likely hoping this is another Baby Driver and the romcom she starred in commercial hit. ("Immaculate" however wasn't)

Not my cup of tea of a genre. I'll pay more attention to the other stuff Wright's doing whenever they are ready.

@NinnesMBC - still need to see Last Night in Soho but I agree..

His other projects , especially the Running Man reboot he is doing .

@TheVisionary25 - The remake of Running Man is a little interesting because it's not what you would imagine Wright would pick up to work with. It's basically a type of death match that is televised ala Hunger Games but with convincts. But something in it probably spoke to his sensitivities.

@NinnesMBC - yep

Seems like he’s experimenting with stuff outside of his wheelhouse or so because even The Chain sounds like a more intense thriller.

@NinnesMBC - if you read the original short story from Stephen King, it's in one of his anthologies (read all of them and you'll find it) it's more of a comment on social issues.

@MCULover - I'll try to do that. Stil, Edgar Wright and commentary of social issues isn't what I usually think that would appeal him.

She’s dead up becoming the boobs girl and it often feels intentional. Which good for her she’s fine as [frick] but sometimes she appears to denounce it?? Starting to notice a pattern when it comes to some of her roles…

There are movies where I’ll watch and be like “she has range” and others where I don’t see a lick of it. Edgar is a good get though.
