TENET Director Christopher Nolan Looks Set To Make A Lot Of Money From Box Office Takings

We know that filmmaker Christopher Nolan is pushing for Tenet to be released in theaters as planned this July, but there could be a good reason for that based on this intel about the movie's finances...

The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan is a big believer in the theatrical experience, hence why he's pushing hard for Tenet to be released on the big screen this July. However, there could be another reason why the filmmaker is keen to ensure that the movie plays in theaters rather than VOD.

In Deadline's report about the movie possibly being delayed as a result of COVID-19, it's mentioned that Nolan has 20% of Tenet's first dollar gross, meaning he stands to make a huge amount of money from the hundreds of millions of dollars a release like this is bound to make with a theatrical run.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding whether people will return to theaters given everything that's happening in the world right now, Tenet being released in July would definitely generate a lot of interest. People are hungry for fresh content, and many will flock to see a big budget blockbuster.

Throw in the fact that it will be the first major release since February/March, and that means Nolan is bound to cash in big time. Is that the driving force behind his insistence that it play in theaters? Honestly, it's probably just a very minor part, but this certainly paints a different light on his comments.

Regardless, Warner Bros. wants at least 80% of the world's theaters open if they're to release Tenet as they need to make back its pricey $200 million production and the 20% they're giving Nolan.

Right now, we're forced to wait and see.

This is a STUPID idea. It doesn't matter what Nolan wants there're millions of people not willing to risk their health–or even worse, death–to just see a movie. It Tenet hit theaters in July Nolan will not only be contributing to the spread of Covid-19, but will likely also be his first box office failure.

I get the feeling that that's not something he wants, which is why Tenet will likely not be released in July.

@Kozmik - So only the very elderly and the unhealthy go to the movies?

Because everyone else isn't dying from this in any kind of a meaningful number. The healthy, the young - not anymore deadly than the flu.

Stop trying to incite panic. Not sure what you are getting out of it, but stop it. If life doesn't return to normal quickly, this nation will slip into the 3rd world.

@CharleyBologna - The old people don't have to actually go to the movies to get Covid. The young will go out to the movies, get infected and transfer it to their grandparents or whatever. And Covid kills old people more easily than flu.

This dumb narrative being created that Nolan is Mr. Money Bags willing to jeopardize the public's safety is really a reach.. of course the most successful film director is bound to make leaps of cash from his films.. what is the point here? WB will have final say whether the film is released, Nolan's input is minor at best.
