TENET Will Not Make Its August Release And Is Now Expected To Launch Internationally

Christopher Nolan's Tenet making its planned theatrical release on August 12 always seemed like a long shot, and Warner Bros. has now decided to remove the film from its release schedule altogether...

Tenet will not be hitting theaters on August 12 after being removed from Warner Bros.' release schedule.

After being delayed four times already, the studio and director Christopher Nolan were hoping that the pandemic would have subsided enough for the mysterious sci-fi flick to make next month's launch, but with coronavirus cases continuing to surge in many parts of North America, it's simply not a feasible option. Instead, the movie is expected to release in overseas markets first, and then later in U.S. cities where cinemas can safely reopen, as opposed to nationwide.

WB is expected to announce its new plan in the coming days.

“Our goals throughout this process have been to ensure the highest odds of success for our films while also being ready to support our theater partners with new content as soon as they could safely reopen,” said Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich (via THR).

"We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature. We are not treating Tenet like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that."

Emmerich also announced that The Conjuring 3 is moving from September 11 to June 4, 2021. Wonder Woman 1984 and Dune are still set for Oct. 2 and Dec. 18, respectively, but don't be surprised if they are ultimately forced to shift into 2021.

We'll keep you guys updated.

TENET's constant release changes feel like a pretty great microcosm for the US' handling of the pandemic.
Also, good for them for supporting international cinemas that can operate instead of making them take a loss because of one country's embarrassing incompetence.

I think it will still take an L. US theatrical releases for 2020 are a pipe dream. IDK if people will be in a rush to hit theaters internationally and that missing US revenue will hurt, especially if theaters aren't safe until next summer. Not to mention that there will surely be a quality pirate version before it releases in the US.

@inkniron

I’m more worried about spoilers than a pirated copy.

Everyone says the same thing when an international market gets something before the United States.

Aquaman and Iron Man 3 had pirated copies out a week or two before they released here - and both of them made a shit ton of money.

@regularmovieguy - That's a little different. I wouldn't watch a poor HC copy either but if there is a significant time difference, there will be a quality one way before it's released here, which I will.

@inkniron

I just can’t do that - Iron Man 3 was the last camrip I saw because I just couldn’t [frick]ing wait to see it.

I was genuinely so hyped for that movie.

Tenet I can wait for - just worried about [frick]ing spoilers at this point. I’m pretty active on Reddit and CBM has had a bad case of trolls spoiling movies in the past.

Don't expect any movies to release AT LEAST until October-November. And that's if we're lucky.

@RageDriver2401 - The current administration is scared of mandating masks but decided to bring back the gestapo in these trying times. 2021 seems optimistic at this point.
