TERMINATOR Star Arnold Schwarzenegger Is "Done" With That Franchise; Doubts THE LEGEND OF CONAN Will Happen

Arnold Schwarzenegger confirms he's finished playing the Terminator franchise's T-800, while also casting doubt on the possibility that he'll reprise the title role in the long-rumoured The Legend of Conan.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been part of the Terminator franchise from the start and returned to lend his talents to later instalments as well.

While his "cameo" in Salvation was created with CG, the actor took on leading roles in both Genisys and Dark Fate, two movies that received negative reviews and performed poorly at the box office (both were considered franchise killers). A new approach is obviously needed, and if and when it happens, it will be minus the T-800.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com), Schwarzenegger said, "The franchise is not done. I’m done."

"I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to The Terminator. Someone has to come up with a great idea. The Terminator was largely responsible for my success, so I always would look at it very fondly. The first three movies were great."

"Number four [Salvation] I was not in because I was governor," he continued. "Then five [Genisys] and six [Dark Fate] didn’t close the deal as far as I’m concerned. We knew that ahead of time because they were just not well written."

That's not Arnie's only iconic role, of course, as his big break in Hollywood came playing Conan the Barbarian. We've been hearing about plans for The Legend of Conan for years now, but it doesn't sound like the project is anywhere near as far along as many outlets have reported.

"It’s been pending for the last 10 years," Schwarzenegger admits. "[Fredrik] Malmberg owns the rights. He comes to me and says, “Oh, I have a deal with Netflix,” and when we ask Netflix, they don’t know anything about it. It’s one of those crazy things. I hope he figures it out."

"There’s a great script out there that John Milius wrote, and others have written one. The story is there. There are directors who want to do it. But he has the rights, and until he sells the rights for one or two movies, or for the franchise, there’s nothing you can do about it."

It's a shame to think the actor won't be back as the T-800 or Conan, but the time for those characters may have been and gone, freeing the silver screen icon to move on to new roles.

Sylvester Stallone, for example, has closed the door on Rocky, but found new roles in the Marvel and DC Universe as characters like Stakar Ogord and King Shark. We'd love to see the former Governor of California follow suit, but time will tell on that front.

Shame about Conan.

@Spagett - I figured Arnold's Conan is basically done at this point, but I'm also saddened that apparently nothing is happening at Netflix either.

@Spagett -

King Conan always made the most sense to me when he came back to acting, thought it would be the franchise he would go back to

I really can’t see where the Terminator franchise can go from here unless they take another stab at the machine-run future. The robot travels back in time to kill an important charcaters
has been done to death.

Wasn't Dark Fate not that bad? I didn't see it but I heard okay things. Genisys sucked.

After Cameron, he should have been the one protecting the Franchise, making sure the quality was always there.

Instead every time a new one came he'd be talking about the Special effects etc where as what made the first two great was the story line, lots of emotion and how tense they were

I wouldn't be sad if we got a TV show reboot in a decade that was the same level of quality as Westworld

Just like Star Wars, the extended universe in the comic and novels, which were sequels were much better than the movie sequels

I kinda do still want a Terminator movie with Arnie, just not as a Terminator. A regular guy (maybe who the terminators are based on) fighting proto-terminators would be cool

Arnold wasted his time being Governor of California. He didn't accomplish anything and the actually tarnished his legacy a bit by making films the End of Days and Eraser that just weren't as good.

His biggest mistake was abandoning King Conan or whatever the sequel was, and agreeing to do crap money grabs like Terminator Genysis and Terminator Woke Fate.

Anime or a mature rated cartoon in the vein of Invincible are the best routes to go. Limitless creative possibilities going animated. I'd go back to the original idea of the terminator being an everyman. The bodybuilder thing has been done. I'd go back to the original concept art with Lance Henriksen.

Also, in the terminator resistance GameCube game, SkyNet had "won" in one particular timeline, and was doing a bunch of terraforming stuff / big operations. They should pull on that thread. Also, reveal that SkyNet did not just invent time travel technology without extensively researching the consequences of using such technology, and the resistance gaining access to it doesn't actually impact Skynets overall plans at all.

If you go the movie route: setting is something gritty, like post-apocalyptic California. Filmed in the style of It Comes at Night/The Quiet Place, where mistrust of others is palpable, and the perceived danger is crushing from all sides. The world they know is one of ruin and awful scarcity, and there's an unknown enemy that makes people disappear. No one knows why the world ended, but rumors range from aliens to a virus that drove people insane. No one sees the enemy and lives to tell about it, so people live in small, isolated groups, underground and as far from any active areas as possible. A lone machine, which no one realizes is a machine, is stalking them as they migrate. The terminator is the everyman Terminator mentioned above. These people live in a future that has been dominated and ruled by SkyNet for over a century and they have collectively forgotten the "old world" and how this one came to be.

I have to agree, The Quite Place, captured the horrific nature future of the future war, in terms of the constant fear of being discovered better than any of the Terminator sequels.

I haven't seen It Comes At Night, I'll check it out

@SimplyAz - exactly. Quiet Place has really set the the standard for that kind of stuff. That absolute fear of the not being able to trust your surroundings and constantly having to be on the move.

It Comes At Night is really good. Highly recommend

Makes sense, he already did the comeback twice. I’m one of the few that seemed to really enjoy Dark Fate but I think the way it ends is enough closure for me to sunset the franchise. I’ll cautiously approach any potential reboots if they do come out but I’m fine with the core franchise to be ended

It was honestly always weird for him to play a terminator more than once. Doesn't really make sense that an infiltrator robot looks like a one that has already been exposed.

Excusable for T2 for the sake of "the previous big bad is now the hero", but after that it became just silly.

Too bad, always felt like a Legend of Conan seemed like a fitting ending and nice way to wrap up the franchise in a trilogy. Could have been epic.

I actually agree with him Terminator 3 is pretty good it's what got me into the franchise in the first place so I have a fond memory of it despite that fight that T2 is so insanely good that's it's a step down. Dark Fate was enjoyable to me because of Linda Hamilton was back and she did great but for a franchise I love I honestly don't want another film unless it takes places in the Future War like Salvation should've.

If there is a King Conan made by today's Hollywood it would be about how Conan's daughter is a greater barbarian than he ever was.
