The Reason a Sequel Hasn't Been Greenlit for Independence Day

After years of hearing rumors about a possible sequel for Independence Day, fans finally hear the reason the film has been stalled.

A sequel outline for "Independence Day," was written in 2004 by the original director Ronald Emmerich and original writer; Dean Devlin...but for some reason the script never saw the light of day. Why is this?

In 2008, a contributor for "IESB.net;" Robert Sanchez, had the opportunity to speak with the CEO of 20th Century Fox Tom Rothman who explained the supposed reason behind the stalling of a sequel.

"We would love to do it, it's really a matter of Roland, it's up to Roland. He knows that we'd love to do it. I don't think there is a script but there have been a lot of ideas, but the truth of the matter is he's been making other films. He made "Day After Tomorrow" for us, big hit movie; he's doing '2012' for Sony. But, any day that Roland wanted to do that, we would be very excited to do it because I think, yes, that story definitely can and should continue," Rothman stated.

So there you have it folks, the lack of a sequel to a film that earned over $800 million at the box office is due to the director not being on board as well as script concerns...but wait, this doesn't seem to be the full story.

Thanks to Latinoreview.com, they had the opportunity to speak with Emmerich on the matter. When asked about the script being written and yet no sequel has been made, he had this to say.

"Dean Devlin and I are still set to make a sequel likely because we’ve found some sort of idea and we approached FOX and FOX has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean’s and my deal, and Will’s (Smith) deal. Will wants to do it in some sort of a package they can live with. So it's just been in negations now since forever, and naturally FOX says 'Why don’t you do it without Will Smith?' I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too. And, so, it's in limbo and lately the studios are fighting. Like gross players, and Will is a gross player and is probably the only gross player right now who’s worth his gross. So we’ll see what happens. I would love to do it," he explained.

So doing a sequel without Will smith is justifiable in the eyes of Fox? Really?

When Emmerich was asked to confirm that he does indeed have a solid story and whether or not he could elaborate on the synopsis, he confirmed a solid story has been written but there's no way he could release the synopsis without upsetting Devlin, which is understandable.

So after years, the truth has finally come out involving the lack of a sequel to "Independence Day." I'm not really surprised...disappointed, but not surprised.

@Teabag

Thanks dude. I didn't hate Hancock, but I'm right there with you. I've heard of a sequel since two years after the release of ID4 so to have this new information dangling over my head where Emmerich has a solid script and wants to create a sequel and yet FOX is asking for the film to be made without Will...Really? Really? I would pay twice as much for this sequel than I would for Hancock. They need to perform whatever negotiation needs to be made because the guy generates a return on investment for every film he's in in relation to these other stars who earn $20 million a film and yet their biggest box office smash was $500 million at best.

@LEEE777

They did "win" but you know there's so many holes for Hollywood to say a signal was sent back someplace or another invasion from a nearby species...if they can bring back these horror creatures, they can make up a story involving a sequel for ID4

@swiftsword

That was funny as hell. LOL. Good ol' FOX

That movie shouldn't have a sequel... The movie was awesome... And the ending was really epic... If they made a sequel it will kill the awesomeness of the humans win at the end of the first film

Flames...it ended like a one shot movie, all the aliens died, end of story. By your own admission that there would need to be new alien bad guys means that there is no need for a sequel.
If you need more aliens write a whole new movie.

I watched ID4 recently... it is not as good as I remember. In fact it sucked. Doing a sequel now would not really hurt the integrity of the story, but artistically speaking it's probably a terrible idea.

That would be great if they actually got together and made another one. I love that movie! Get shivers every time I hear the "Independence Day" speech...and I'm, neither American nor patriotic in anyway, but that still gives me shivers lol.

Independence Day is one of my favorite sci-fi movies of all time, so I'm cautiously optimistic at the prospect of a sequel. It all depends on the direction of the story, since bringing Will Smith back should be a no-brainer. Bringing back Jeff Goldblum & Bill Pullman would be nice, too.

I loved the movie but this one does not need a sequel. And if the sequel is just yet another Will Smith film, it would suck ass. There are very few Will Smith films that i like. His best ones are when he teams up with someone else. IMO, Goldblum and Pullman made ID4. Will Smith just contributed. I say have EVERYONE back or don't make it.

okay, so why exactly does this film need a sequel? Shaman makes some excellent points here.

you can cut will smith, if you don't recast. have it go in another direction, with Goldblume working in area 51, discovering a plan b that was set by the original aliens.
(maybe they left a hive?) Bring in another a-list actor to soften the blow. it could work. I am not big on the idea, but i would see it!

Im with some of you guys, it didnt need a sequel but I still love the movie, mostly because of Will and Jeff Goldblum (wherever did Jeff Goldblum go to, apart from being the greatest monster in duel monsters of course!)

A lot of u guys make good points. I don't think this needs a sequel, but what would be interesting is to see how they salvage all of that tech the aliens left behind. But Macksimus has it right Peace, NOOO Peace. That is still a good point.

@ thwhtknight

all the aliens didn't die though. it was just that mother ship, its not like the aliens' home world was destroyed. they could do a sequel, with the same aliens easily, it just doesn't need one, lol.
HarrisonBergeron
HarrisonBergeron - 10/13/2009, 12:38 PM
The aliens were nomads that lived on the mother ship, they all died. The only logical sequel would just be a more violent version of "District 9", but we already have "District 9" so what would be the point?

The idea about casting another big name in Will's place isn't bad, if they did that they could make it's sequel status somewhat ambiguous. Don't call it Independence Day 2, just give it an original title and make it so that only people in the know know that it is related to the Smith movie, sort of like a mix between "Terminator: Salvation"(we didn't know for sure whether it was a sequel to T3 or not) and "The Road Warrior" (They kept its sequel status a secret in the U.S.). Even with Smith calling it ID2 would ensure a major loss.

I've got it!

REBOOT!

@ harrison

when did they ever mention that their entire race lived on the mother ship?? it didn't. it said they went from planet to planet, taking over, but it never ONCE said that was their entire race and that there weren't more somewhere.

This was one of the last big movies made that used models instead of 100% CGI. It was the end of an era and a sad end. CGI still lacks over blue screen model props. It is the reason the Star Wars prequels sucked(besides the bad stories). They ought to just leave it be, a monument like Stone Mountain.

yeah, although this movie DID rely very heavily on CGI.
