Can you dig it?

If so, you might be alone, because the news that Lin-Manuel Miranda has chosen his next stage project has not been met with as much enthusiasm as one would expect.

According to Deadline, the multi-time Tony and Grammy Award winner is planning to adapt Walter Hill's cult 1979 futuristic thriller The Warriors as a stage musical.

The movie, which was based on Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel of the same name, is set in a near-future New York which has been ravaged by gang violence, with various different factions fighting for control of the city. One such group, the titular Warriors, must travel 30 miles, from the north end of the Bronx to their home turf in Coney Island in southern Brooklyn, after they are framed for the murder of a respected gang leader.

The Warriors spawned a video game, comic books, and various other merchandise. A TV show based on the film has been in development for Netflix since 2018, but we haven't had an update on the project in years so it may have been shelved.

Hill reflected on the movie's sustained popularity in a 2016 interview.

"I love the fact that people still enjoy something I did what, 37 years ago? It makes an old man happy. I'm surprised by it. But I loved working with my cameraman Andy Laszlo in shooting it, and I loved working with my cast, who were incredibly trusting of this crazy old f*cker that was making the movie. They didn't get it, I don't think—costumed gangs running around New York?—but they just went with it."

The premise could certainly work as a musical, but would it still be The Warriors, or something more akin to West Side Story? This seems to be the major concern for many fans of the film and book, who are not happy about the prospect of such an anarchic, borderline nihilistic story being toned down or "neutered" for the stage.

don't think anyone in the movie has been in a comic book movie, what does this have to do with comic book movies?

This seems like it is right up Lin-Manuel Miranda's ally. Something to look forward to?

I swear, Broadway has beaten Hollywood in the lack of originality department.

There's even a back to the future musical.

Good lord, boo! It'll probably be fantastic, but for f***'s sake, why?

P.S. I have yet to hear anyone mention the Warriors refernce in John Wick: Chapter 4. It's so blatantly obvious.

@MosquitoFarmer - Why?

Because...

@MosquitoFarmer -

There was a point in my life when my siblings and I would repeatedly watch The Warriors three times a day, play the video game, and know the entire script by heart. Years passed by, and we all forgot about that time in our lives, but we all marked out when that scene happened in John Wick.

#1: This is quite possibly the worst idea ever. #2: Hamilton is overrated.

I like to call this the "Hideo Kojima Effect", where even a genuinely talented and accomplished person (or Elon Musk) is starting to pull through on just completely batshit ideas, because they have reached such an olympic level of success that there is simply noone left around them who would dare to tell them "No!".

Turns out even the musical genius of a generation probably needs people to remind him to chill the [frick] out every now and then.

@Drace24 - uh Kojima is a God, Miranda is a douche bag who thinks he can rhyme

@Drace24 - what ideas from Kojima needed to be told no?

@bobevanz - Woosh! I'm not saying that he's not a master in his field. I'm saying that he is but that apperantly does not protect anyone from making batshit crazy creative decisions. (I mean... come on. That's kind of what his games are known for.) But interestingly not in his earlier works, presumably because people still dared to tell him "No, Mr Kojima. Giving your characters names like "Die Hardman" or "Naked Snake" is stupid and we are not going to do that."

Just like I'm pretty sure, had Christopher Nolan had the idea of ending one of his earlier movies with a time traveling bookcase inside a black hole built by space ghosts from the future because love is quantifiable, pretty sure someone would have stopped him.

I can also call it the Elon Musk Effect if you want, but the principle is the same.

@bobevanz - Hamilton is fine. The music is one of rhe better aspects, they werent trying to do conscious rap or lyricsk rao its basically a genre onto itself.

The idea that people who regard movies with dudes in animal themed tights as masterpieces having any opinion about Broadway ranks just below the idea that my dog having an opinion on my tax returns.
