Universal Developing Live-Action VOLTRON Movie With WATCHMEN Scribe David Hayter

The Voltron animated series will return to Netflix early next year, but Universal Pictures is developing a live-action version which will be brought to life by Watchmen writer David Hayter...

According to Deadline, Universal Pictures is moving forward with a live-action adaptation of Voltron. The original Japanese anime aired between 1984 - 1985 and quickly developed a massive fan base despite not being around all that long. A one off special would follow in 1986, while another short-lived animated series debuted in 1998. Nickelodeon tried to reboot the property in 2011, but that too lasted only 26 episodes. A second season of Voltron Legendary Defender will hit Netflix in January.

The movie is being produced by Tom Engelman (The Lone Ranger), while David Hayter (Watchmen) has been hired to pen the screenplay. Attempts to develop a live-action Voltron have been attempted before, but they've never materialised. Whether or not this one will remains to be seen, but Universal is moving forward with a Pacific Rim sequel, so it's hardly a surprise that they'd give this property a try. Still, given the franchise's rocky history, they could be taking a pretty expensive gamble here.

Do you have any interest in a live-action Voltron? As always, be sure to share your thoughts below.

Well....with the success ($$$$) of Transformers and to some regard, Pacific Rim, this seems like a no brainer. Not the biggest fan of these personally, but know it would look pretty epic on the big screen and do EXTREMELY well over seas.

@JoshWilding His name is David "Hayter" with a "T". Please correct.

This could be a good movie. David Hayter is a pretty good screenwriter. Watchmen, X-Men, X-Men 2 (still arguably one of the best X-Men films to date). At one point he was attached to write a film adaptation of Metal Gear Solid, but whenever him and Kojima fell out I'm guessing that went down the tube. Oh Well!!

What did happened between him and Kojima?

@Prime - I did a little research and couldn't find an exact reason other than Metal Gear V was considered a reboot of the franchise and Kojima wanted someone new. I'm guessing there's way more to it than that, but who knows.

With Jurassic World and the Furious Franchise. Universal seems to be making all the right moves, this might actually be good if they put some money behind. One less 80s franchise for Michael Bay to rape at least.
