When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Glad to see they liked it. I'm not expecting a deep and sophisticated story with this film. Hopefully both PR and the Godzilla reboot revive giant monster movies. I would love to see something similar to Cloverfield.

I find it bullshit how this movie is getting good reviews because people "expected to turn their brains off." A movie is a movie and should be judged on all film elements. People shouldn't review it as "well it's giant robots vs monsters so I wasn't going to take it seriously anyway."

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939

Because that's not the goal of the film. Sure the story looks pretty cliche and generic and you can criticize it for that. These types of movies aren't everyone's cup of tea and that's completely understandable. But as a piece of entertainment it hits all the right notes.

Definitely need to check this out, hearing a lot of great things about it, I hope it beats that comedy that's coming out this weekend at the B.O.

Not every movie has to have deep, complex storytelling with amazing performances. Pacific Rim, judging by the trailers looked like a mindless dumb action movie. But Sometimes you gotta leave your brain at home and accept it for what it is. Dumb fun.

I have pretty much have the same thoughts as Super Sam and Mike89. Movies get weighed just as much on expectations as they do on common film elements like characterization, story, etc. Nothing wrong with holding every film to the same standard but ultimately films get judged on how much it succeeded at being what it's supposed to be. The problem arises when you have a film that promises a standard it can't achieve. For me, this movie wasn't meant to be character or plot driven and I never got that from any of the trailers. The Jaegers and Kaiju are the real stars of what is Del Toro's love letter to the mecha and tokusatsu genres and while it may be shallow, it looks beautifully done.

'Course I will judge for myself once I see it but so far, sounds like my expectations may be met.

@Spideyman maybe it's better than Man of Steel. Movies can be better than MoS you know. (and IM3 for you Marvel fanboys)

@McGee lol no

Don't worry guys, after I see it, I'll review it and tell you the facts.

Couldn't have said it better myself. And I agree with FrancisHates. The reason the Transformers movies get torn apart while Pacific Rim gets a free pass is because Bay focuses more on the humans who aren't even likable characters. In fact they're the exact opposite. The Autobots are hardly even characters (Seriously, we never get to really know any of the Autobots or Decepticons! Throughout the entire trilogy!) and are only used as tools for the action sequences which are poorly shot and you can barely make out what's going on in them. Not to mention its terrible humor and complete disrespect of the source material.

They are not wrong about the action/battles etc..all superb. And I don't NEED a deep story with complex characters in this type of movie either, but that movie has to meet me half way! If I'm literally snickering out loud at a scene which is supposed to be a heartbreaking farewell between father and son, then something is wrong. Look, obviously others were and will be sold on that bit and the rest of the predictable cheese..I just wasn't. Different strokes.

well i for one am really HOPING it has bad acting, and if it does i'm going to swear it was deliberate on gdt's part. i want cheesy stereotypes, hamming and one-dimensionality all the damn way. why? because it's a GENRE movie. i want it to feel like one. i want to feel like i felt the first time i saw akira, or godzilla vs. the sea monster. or mothra. yeah! i want tiny twins to sing in the goddam hotel room! gimme that shit!

seriously, i want it to feel like he remembers what it was like to watch those films i grew up on. i don't want to shut my brain OFF, i just want to use the part of it that likes anime and kaiju.

Wow. I find it completely mind boggling that someone like del Toro can totally get away with making a movie that has no story and only big action pieces yet people expect every Michael Bay movie to somehow be the second coming of Christ. I call BS on the whole lot of you that thought Pacific Rim was a great movie when in reality it was a poor man's Transformers. What a bunch of..... you know its not even worth it. Man the hypocrisy on display is mind numbing.

for those of us that are "hypcrites" in your eyes, the difference between pacific rim and transformers is not just the NAME of the director but the attitude they bring. the topic came up in another thread, but i agreed with it so i'll repeat it here.

basically, even if the character development is weak in a del toro movie, it's not insulting. he respects the audience and the characters. maybe in PR the action is the centerpiece, but according to the reviews i've read, at least the actors aren't just comic relief.

bay, however, makes everything a joke. in transformers, there are black and jewish stereotypes, shots framed to glorify women as pieces of meat, robots with swinging testicles, robots that pee on dogs, and tedious comedy bits like the "gay guys in the toilet stall" shtick. the characters are not only poorly developed but obnoxious and irritating, and written primarily to mug through sight gags, yell at each other, or, if it happens to be a young woman, waggle her ass at the leering camera.

bay is a pig and his characters INSULT the genres they are supposed to represent, and in so doing they insult us as fans. del toro may not be perfect, and perhaps this time he did a sub-par job with the character development. fine. but he respects the genre and he respects us. bay does not.

@AlternateNo4 (and everyone else like you)
I disagree. Not everything is a joke in Bay's Transformers. I re-watch the movies often and last I checked, it wasn't a laugh-fest from start to finish. I will give you that SOMETIMES he does tries to be funny when it's not needed. But I'm fine with that because that's his directing style. Now if you don't like his directing style - that's one thing, but to claim his movies are "bad" because he did something in the movie that you didn't like is (like I said previously) BULLSHIT. Have you even seen Pacific Rim? Because it also has some cringe-worthy out-of-place humor moments in it. And to then come out and praise del Toro for the SAME exact thing that you bash Bay for doing is double Bullshit. I don't care if YOU THINK the characters are obnoxious and irritating. I didn't think they were. Apparently a lot of other people didn't think so either because we're three movies into the franchise and it's still making money. IF the movie had been as bad as YOU say it is, then the second and third one's would have dwindled away into la-la land. Obviously, he's doing SOMETHING right. Tell me - Who died and made you the last authority on how to make a good (last I checked - good was relative) movie?

That you feel the need to bash Bay's Transformers to uplift Pacific Rim is sad. A movie will stay up or fail on its own. If its good people will flock to it. Period. All I've heard so far is a bunch of cop outs (well he made the plot ridiculous on purpose/ He never intended for it to be anything but kid friendly fun) and excuses (but he respects the genre) for Pacific Rim's weak ass plot. I hate to rain on your parade, but Bay didn't make a mistake with his transformers movies either. He made the movies he wanted to make. So those arguments are BULLSHIT also.

First of all; technically speaking; Transformers and Pacific Rim couldn't be further apart and different from one another. One's a REMAKE of an 80s cartoon about alien beings from ANOTHER PLANET who are machines that can transform into different modes of transportation. The other is about man-made gigantic battle-suits piloted by humans to battle monsters from the center of the earth (still cant say that without LMAO). Attempting to compare them is stupid.

You can call Bay all the names you want till you're blue in the face. The point is Pacific Rim (you know the movie the article is ACTUALLY about) LIKE I SAID is a watered down poor man's Transformers. I don't know what's worse - The continuous hate guys like you try to dish on Michael Bay, or the free rides you give every other director who do the EXACT same things he does. What a bunch of........
AlternateNo4
AlternateNo4 - 7/11/2013, 3:05 PM
@askanison
A-you're the one that started the comparison; i just tried to explain my/our point of view.
B-i'm not trying to uplift PR because i haven't seen it. i'm actually headed out the door right now. BUT i haven't read any review of it that suggested there was anything along the lines of the dumb sex jokes, derogatory racial stereotypes or toilet humor i described as being in the transformers series. if there is, i'll admit it, and i'll certainly criticize del toro for doing it.
C-of course i understand that my opinion is only an opinion. do you? and do i actually NEED to type "imho" before every sentence? it's kind of automatic on this site.
D-i see your point about one being an adaptation and the other being an original idea, but does that prove your point or mine? because as an a "remake," TF is even worse. NONE of those characters appeared in any other version of the story... and NONE of that juvenile, low-class, boobs-n-pee type humor was ever a part of the concept before.
AlternateNo4
AlternateNo4 - 7/11/2013, 8:58 PM
okay all, if anyone's still reading this crappy thread, see the movie. it's about a billion times better than TF.

it's not plot heavy, no. but it's a simple story anyway, and there's enough to do the job.

yes, there are a couple of stupid cardboard cutout characters, and there are three that definitely bring the movie down a notch... it would have been a better film if they'd toned down the schtick and made them more believable.

BUT for the main characters, there WAS at least a little bit of character development, and some good chunks of flashbacks to show what made them the people they are in the story.

and most importantly to my argument, AND as i expected, there was no crude or offensive transformers-style crap. that means no gratuitous shots of women's butts in the pilot suits, no robots shooting missiles from their crotches, no kicking kaiju in the balls, and no giant piles of poop falling on people.

...no wonder askanison40 didn't like it ;-)
