Warner Bros Moving Forward With I AM LEGEND Follow-Up

WB is going ahead with the long-rumored I Am Legend follow up, which may or may not be a prequel. Overbrook Entertainment has closed a deal do make the film, with Arash Amel writing the script.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has closed deals with Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook Entertainment to make a follow up to I Am Legend, a 2007 sci-fi starring Will Smith as scientist Robert Neville, who was the last man on earth doing battle with a mutated mob in New York City after an apocalyptic man-made virus wiped out the population. Grace Of Monaco scribe Arash Amel is set to write the script.

Despite being labeled as a prequel when the idea of a follow-up was conceived, it's currently unknown if that will be the direction the film goes in. Also, it's being planned that Will Smith will reprise his role as Neville, but he won’t commit until the script is ready. His character (spoiler for those who haven't seen the film) died at the end of the first film, so a sequel would be somewhat complicated should he return. It's also unknown if Francis Lawrence - who directed the first film - will return for the follow-up.

I'm not big on the idea either. The first film was perfect as a stand alone story, why mess it up with a sequel? A prequel would be interesting though.

@nuck Agreed. It's funny how this new 52 gimmick helped DC outsell MARVEL for the first time in how long..and all of a sudden DC is owning MARVEL? Fucl{ outta here.
DC has ONE good film which is Dark Knight, and Marvel has five good films leading up to one EPIC movie..Marvel is most definatly winning

Love, love, love The Omega Man. Liked I Am Legend. I really think it said all there was to say, but I'd probably catch a sequel or prequel if Smith is involved. I didn't used to like Will Smith, but I've enjoyed about 90% of his movies.

Omega Man was fun but it was a terrible adaptation of the original book and totally missed the point. The nightstalkers in Omega Man turned into hippies?? WTF?? They're supposed to be Vampires not Hippies, only 70's Hollywood would screw up a great book. Will Smiths version was closer to the book but not entirely, at least they killed him in the end like he's supposed to instead of that schmaltzy a-typical feel good ending for those who can't deal with life so have to have the protagonist survive so they can feel all is right in the world and get a nights sleep. One day Hollywood will grow up like the rest of world cinema and maybe their audiences will mature a little and stop being considered the most simplistic on the planet!

In the meantime while they treat every adaptation and movie a potential franchise with as many sequels and prequels they can squeeze out to simplistic audiences, they will continue to be nothing more than a factory trying to sell brand names and merchandise above actually trying to deliver an artistic product that can stand alone with some respect and integrity.

i'm on board for the sequel as long as they will deviate it from sic-fi to horror just like in the book.

@ Lilvic92 - Top 10 of the past months in comics? All DC, no Marvel :O And you call IM2, TIH, CA:TFA, Thor good movies? Seriously? They are far from good. They are ok, just for fun. Only good movies Marvel has are Iron Man and X-Men: First Class. And even those aren't a match for TDK and BB. Think I'm crazy? Go watch the ratings on IMDb. If those Marvel movies were so good, they would have a higher rating than say a 6.9 for CA? 7.0 for Thor, TIH, IM2? I like all Marvel and DC movies, but there is a difference between good and fun. Just stating facts. Can't accept the facts? Go cry, I don't give a shit.

And btw, bring on I Am Legend 2 :)

Yes, Omega Man was not like the book, and yes, it was a freaking awesome movie. Both are true.

Never have watched the original Vincent Price version...and I own it! Gotta do that.

Book is amazing, a must read if you havent read it. The movie was ok but really didnt have a lot to do with the book so they could really do a lot to expand on it. Whether that is a good idea or not is another story

The first movie was good, I thought the "Mutants/Vampires" could have been done better they looked like bootleg versions of the vampires from Blade 2. I agree with ThreeBig Tacos "Decent movie" but the book is soooooo much better. I wish I would have seen the movie first then red the book last.

If WB was going to use the title I Am Legend they should have kept the book's ending... when he realizes he is the monster the new civilization (vampires)told stories to their children about, he was the boogyman... he was legend...

@Lilvic92

"Batman Begins and Dark Knight are highly overrated films" By whom? the film critics who praised it or the general public that loved the films? DC has made more then one good comic book film,it's just that it may have occurred before you were born (That is if 92 is your birth year.)I'm old enough to have seen Superman,Superman 2,Batman and Batman Returns in theaters and while dated and not up to the standard of modern comic films, they all were regarded as great(well Batman Returns was very good)films in their day.It used to be a running joke in the 90's that Marvel couldn't get it's act together and make a film that didn't go straight to video. That went on til they made Blade in 1998,so it only goes to show you that these things run in cycles and there's no reason not to believe that someday DC/WB will enter a period of creative explosion and dominate the CBM genre.A genre btw that was established by DC films.Looking forward to I am Legend 2,but like everybody else wonder how they can pull this off.

The original story wasn't that great to begin with. Well, it's great until the army shows up out of absolutely nowhere -- with nary the foreshadowing to set it up -- and it falls apart.

But it was better than this Will Smith catastrophe.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are BY FAR the best CBMs ever. Anyone who says not is a complete fool. With that said, maybe with the exception of the old Superman 1 and 2, Marvel has completely raped anything else DC has made.

In the alternate ending he lives and leaves with the girl and the little boy. My only issue with I Am Legend was the monnsters were such cartoony cgu they weren't scary or threatening in the least. They should do a prequel with Smith and Martin Lawrence and get Michael Bay to direct.

I think I am Legend is a great movie and I like it more than I did the book. The books ending was just strange and dumb. Who can forget the scene on the movie when he has to kill his dog. You all know you cried on that scene.
