Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has closed deals with Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook Entertainment to make a follow up to I Am Legend, a 2007 sci-fi starring Will Smith as scientist Robert Neville, who was the last man on earth doing battle with a mutated mob in New York City after an apocalyptic man-made virus wiped out the population. Grace Of Monaco scribe Arash Amel is set to write the script.

Despite being labeled as a prequel when the idea of a follow-up was conceived, it's currently unknown if that will be the direction the film goes in. Also, it's being planned that Will Smith will reprise his role as Neville, but he won’t commit until the script is ready. His character (spoiler for those who haven't seen the film) died at the end of the first film, so a sequel would be somewhat complicated should he return. It's also unknown if Francis Lawrence - who directed the first film - will return for the follow-up.
