This probably won't come as too much of a surprise after the first movie performed so well at the box office ($224.5M domestic and $431.9M global), but Deadline has now confirmed that a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is officially in development at Marvel Studios.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton will return to helm the project as part of an exclusive multi-year overall deal with Disney companies Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. The filmmaker is also said to be working on a new MCU-set Disney+ series, but we don't know if it'll have anything to do with Shang-Chi or focus on a new character entirely.
“Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories and build new worlds with this community,” said Cretton.
“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started,” said Marvel Studios CCO Kevin Feige.
“Destin is a powerhouse storyteller with impeccable taste in material. As we continue to expand our roster, Destin’s unique voice will help usher in an exciting slate of content for our global audience,” added Tara Duncan, President, Freeform & Onyx Collective.
No word on returning cast members, but we assume Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) and Awkwafina (Katy), at the very least, will reprise their respective roles.
