Simu Liu's Shang-Chi is definitely proving himself a worthy Avenger, because Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has smashed expectations at the box office. As of right now, the Marvel Studios movie is on track to scoring the second biggest opening of 2021, topping F9: The Fast Saga to sit comfortably behind Black Widow.
According to THR, after grossing $32.2 million on Saturday, its estimated three-day total has risen to $71.4 million. As a result, it sits between Black Widow's $80.3 million and F9's $70 million.
Shang-Chi also looks set to earn a whopping $83.5 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend, easily besting Halloween's $30.6 million opening back in 2007. This is a big win for the theatrical experience, and a sign that movies such as Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Eternals will open in multiplexes as planned.
Deadline, meanwhile, notes that an impressive $56.2 million overseas opening has taken Shang-Chi up to a $139.7 million global cume. It also broke records in the UK, scoring a $7.7 million debut that's actually the best of the pandemic era. The title character may not be particularly well-known to non-fans, but that Marvel Studios branding and a solid marketing campaign has clearly paid off.
In our latest review of the Marvel Studios movie, we concluded by saying: "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is nothing short of action movie perfection; this is the MCU like you’ve never seen before, and it’s no exaggeration to say Simu Liu was born to play the MCU’s newest Avenger."
