SHANG-CHI Smashes Labor Day Weekend Record With A Marvelous $90+ Million Domestic Haul

The latest box office numbers are in, and as expected, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings surpassed expectations with a pretty damn incredible $90 million domestic haul over Labor Day Weekend.

Predictions for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' box office performance have fluctuated somewhat over the past week or so (no big surprise given the current climate), with early estimates pointing to a record-breaking domestic cume. Those figures did drop significantly on Friday, but we now have confirmation that Marvel Studios' next Phase 4 adventure will have taken in over $90 million by close of business today!

The movie had already claimed the third highest opening day of the pandemic era with $29.6M (just behind F9‘s $29.9M), but this now officially secures the Master of Martial Arts' live-action debut the biggest Labor Day opening weekend of all-time. Overseas, the movie has amassed $56.2 million for a global total of $146.2 million.

A number of factors contributed to this incredibly successful opening, but chief among them is the fact that the film is only playing in theaters and is not available to stream. Will Shang-Chi turn out to be the movie that gets the box office back on track? We wouldn't bet against it!

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers.

Have you guys been to see the film yet? If so, what did you think? Let us know in the usual place.

Word of mouth is huge. My parents aren’t into cbms but they will see it if the word of mouth is good and a handful of people told them to catch this one and they’re going this afternoon.

Amazing! Well deserved 👏🏽

Top 5 MCU! Best origin since IM1

Proves that theaters ARE NOT dead!!

Wish TSS was exclusive to theaters too, that film deserved more.

@Cbmfilmjunkie - yup couldn’t agree more TSS got shafted by WB. Shang Chi was awesome. It wasn’t as great as TSS in my opinion but one of the best MCU films in a long time.

@McMurdo - TSS is the mold of what the DCEU needs to do moving forward to separate itself from the MCU and still provide an entertaining and well balanced movie.

Shang-Chi was just brilliant! Loved every minute 🤙🏽

I was completely wrong. I'm man enough to admit I was wrong. And BOY was I wrong. Shang Chi did NOT underperform and in fact exceeded expectations. And for that I am really happy. I'm glad it succeeded.
In related news this CAN'T be good for Disney's court battle with Scarlett Johansson. She now has all the evidence in the world that her movie would have done even better at the box office if it wasn't a day/date release on Premier Access. The new Sith Lord over at Disney does not seem to be the type to settle so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming weeks. Although he could surprise me and settle. Stranger things have happened. Exhibit A: Shang Chi's performance this weekend.

@BecauseICare - Exactly what I was thinking! 'Shang-Chi's' performance strongly implies (especially if it holds up next week) that if Disney had eschewed the dual release strategy 'Black Widow' would have performed better in it's second week, instead of what was a 92% drop or thereabouts.

That's why week 2 Is so important. If it holds up it proves Johansson's case for her though what I'm curious about is how it reflect on Warner Bros, who committed their entire 2021 slate.

@BecauseICare - That said "Black Widow" was a pretty dissapointing movie for me. Probably one of Disney's weakest efforts to date.

@gonzor - I think 'Black Widow' was less weak than suffered from two problems in particular. First, the timing was off. It was delayed so long that when it was finally released it felt dated. Another was that it felt to me tonally off. In other words, it laid out a Jason Bourne/Winter Soldier-type scenario though played more like 'Spider-Man: Homecoming.'

Overall, I enjoyed it though as I mentioned, it always felt a if there was another grittier movie beneath the surface trying to get out.

@lordSTALE - Don't forget Dragon316 with (hold on, let me get this right (I've been practicing)): "Critics and word of mouth don't matter it's only the Hollywood elite telling you what to watch with their money so don't listen to the racist fan casting and watch for yourself with your money and make up your mind because Marvel only wants the money of the racist fan casting sheep."

How was that? Did I nail it? Too much punctuation? Too coherent? I'm trying to perfect my craft here so feedback is welcomed.

It was one long rambling sentence that didn't seem to make sense and seemed to repeat some of the same points. As close to perfect an impression that anyone could do 👍🏼

@lordSTALE - Thanks, I appreciate that. I'm still honing my craft, so until I can make you want to seriously bang your head on your desk (or wherever you're sitting while reading, whether that be at the dinner table, in a bar, at your therapist's office, etc.) I'm not there just yet. But I'm going to put in some nights and weekends until I have it down for you and the rest of the racist fan casting Hollywood elite followers throwing your money at Marvel. And critics. Almost forgot that one.

Now having seen it, I'd say this movie is like what Aquaman would be if it's story and dialogue weren't mediocre at best

A lot of the story elements are similar between the two, but the action, characters and story are just so much better in Shang-Chi
