SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Currently Tracking For One Of The DCEU's Worst Opening Weekends

We have more bad news for the DCEU as box office tracking points to Shazam! Fury of the Gods having one of this universe's worst opening weekends, something that doesn't bode well for the Big Red Cheese.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi has said a few times that he believes the character's future in the DCU hinges on the upcoming sequel's success. However, if these early box office projections are any indication, the Big Red Cheese may be heading the same way as Black Adam.

According to Box Office Pro's current forecasts, the Shazam! follow-up is currently on track to earn between $43 million and $52 million during its opening weekend in North America.

Even a high of $52 million wouldn't match its 2019 predecessor, and that itself wasn't exactly a huge hit with $363.6 million worldwide. It was an admirable haul, though, and enough - with positive reviews - to prompt Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel.

However, four years later, it seems interest in the franchise has waned and multiple release date delays are unlikely to have helped matters. Throw in the fact people know the DCEU will soon be rebooted as the DCU, and it's hardly surprising that Shazam! Fury of the Gods may underwhelm financially.

While Wonder Woman 1984 ($16.7 million) and The Suicide Squad ($26.2 million) debuted with dismal openings, that's down to the pandemic and day-and-date releases on HBO Max. Shazam! Fury of the Gods will open right above Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey and likely below Shazam!, making it one of the DCEU's worst debuts to date.

For comparison's sake, Black Adam opened to $67 million last October and was deemed a disappointment.

With Shazam! Fury of the Gods arriving in theaters weeks after Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, it should hit #1 no matter what happens. However, it will soon face stiff competition from John Wick: Chapter 4 and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The marketing campaign for this has has been poor and that's thought to be due to Warner Bros. Discovery's lack of funds.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to be released on March 17, 2023.

Well first one didn't make that much either, but looks like the move from Decemeber out of Avatars way wasn't that helpful after all... let's see.

I liked the first Captain Marvel. What about this movie looks promising? They've already used his ace in the hole in an abysmal Black Adam origin story. Now what? Again, I like the first movie, but what in this plot of a sequel makes me - "anyone" - want to see this?

UnderBelly - 2/23/2023, 6:42 AM
@videovac - to be honest I feel if they had to make a part 3. Bringing the rock back would be the only way to get interest. Neither of them can sell it on their own is seems. But I feel Fury of the God's will be more enjoyable than Black Adam regardless.

@UnderBelly, By having the characters in this Captain Marvel sequel be faithful to their comic book counterparts, you're already surpassing the low bar that Black Adam's piss on the source material was. Your f_cking post is better than Black Adam. The Rock turned Black Adam into a hero. That's all the f_ck you need to know about how bad Black Adam was from conception. Dwayne totally shitted on the character, and those numb skulls at Warner Brothers let him.

@videovac - how in the world is Shazam 2 more comic accurate, it has new characters made specifically for the film and not found in the comics
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 2/23/2023, 7:08 AM
@duncboy - Basically has 3 Atomic Men.

TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/23/2023, 7:34 AM
@videovac - And its using original villains for no reason...and yes, The Rock's ego preventing them from using his biggest villain doesnt help.

@UnderBelly - I think Levi could sell it, the first one did well, considering it was a lower budged CBM. I think it comes down to the delays. If this came out last year or two years ago i think it would be a different story. i think Black Adam being absolutely dreadful didn't help either.

Such a shame, love these characters. Really love the first Shazam movie, what a breath of fresh air that was.

@Termin8r - I like Levi, but on his own he really doesn't have star potential. First one did ok, but definitely didn't perform as well as they'd expected. This one is tracking low even with the addition of some bigger names. Like I said, I think it will be entertaining, but not expecting it to gross alot. Maybe it will have legs with a good word of mouth.

@PlusUltra, let me getting right, you were in a Ms Marvel thread yesterday playing unnecessary lawyer to any and all comments, no matter how small, that said they didn't want to see the Ms Marvel team-up movie, but "Flop city.", even if I could reasonably agree with you, is fair game?

What happened to that fake-ass, forced, positivity you were displaying yesterday?

(Typo so I have to re-type. God this site and its 1992 technology.)

@PlusUltra, let me get this right, you were in a Ms. Marvel thread yesterday playing unnecessary lawyer to any and all comments, no matter how small, that said they didn't want to see the Ms. Marvel team-up movie, but "Flop city.", even if I could reasonably agree with you, is fair game?

@videovac - There’s literally no reason to be negative about The Marvels. We’ve seen nothing from it, and the idea of a female superhero team-up doesn’t make my manhood feel small. But there’s literally no reason to be positive about this movie. Despite the fact, based on the evidence present, this movie is on a first class flight to Flop city, and looking past the fact it’s one of the last remnants of a defunct universe, it looks like total shite.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 2/23/2023, 7:07 AM
@PlusUltra - What do you mean there is no reason to be positive about this movie? It’s the same director and same cast coming back from a great first movie.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 2/23/2023, 7:10 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - But the movie doesn’t look good. It doesn’t sound good. I can’t put a positive spin on that.
kylo0607
kylo0607 - 2/23/2023, 7:15 AM
@PlusUltra - There is quite a valid reason to be negative about The Marvels.

I presume you haven't read the leaked plot lol
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 2/23/2023, 7:16 AM
@PlusUltra - That’s fine if you don’t think the trailers look good. But a returning cast and returning director is not nothing, it’s definitely a reason to be positive about a movie. Personally I trust that way more than trailers, which to me are just the equivalent to fast food commercials, they can show you all they want but they can’t tell you if what they are selling is any good or not.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 2/23/2023, 7:17 AM
@kylo0607 - I haven’t, no. If it looks shit, I’ll say it looks shit. If it ends up sucking ass, I’ll feel no way in stating that too. But we ain’t there yet.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 2/23/2023, 7:18 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - I’m not big on the two leads, if I’m being honest. They’re meant to be playing the same character, but they’re not. Of all the good about the first movie, that irked me, and it looks evens worse this time around.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 2/23/2023, 7:18 AM
@kylo0607 - For as long as I live I don’t think I’ll ever understand why anyone would ever read a leaked plot.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 2/23/2023, 7:20 AM
@PlusUltra - Really? I can’t really remember seeing much of Billy in any of the trailers.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 2/23/2023, 7:27 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - We ain’t seen much from
Billy, but what little seems to be the same as before, that’s fine. But Levi has doubled down on the goofy.

TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 2/23/2023, 7:05 AM
And that’s precisely why they need James Gunn and the new interconnected universe. These movies are living and usually dying without any boost from the overall franchise. Superman: Legacy can’t get here soon enough.

@marvel72 - That was never going to happen, but Ant-Man’s fumbled its own bag anyway.

Twenty23Three

Shame because the first one is great, but with all that is going on at DC and the train wreck that was Black Adam this was predictable
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/23/2023, 7:26 AM
The first one barely broke even, and that was because it was really cheap, and critics loved it.
This looks more expensive, and lets face, between the trailers and the leaks, it looks like hot garbage...let alone the first one came out before the pandemic, when people were open to "risk" seeing a movie they were not sure of its quality...

Been saying this for months, this might be one of the the biggest bombs of the year.
