SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Currently Tracking For One Of The DCEU's Worst Opening Weekends

We have more bad news for the DCEU as box office tracking points to Shazam! Fury of the Gods having one of this universe's worst opening weekends, something that doesn't bode well for the Big Red Cheese.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi has said a few times that he believes the character's future in the DCU hinges on the upcoming sequel's success. However, if these early box office projections are any indication, the Big Red Cheese may be heading the same way as Black Adam.

According to Box Office Pro's current forecasts, the Shazam! follow-up is currently on track to earn between $43 million and $52 million during its opening weekend in North America.

Even a high of $52 million wouldn't match its 2019 predecessor, and that itself wasn't exactly a huge hit with $363.6 million worldwide. It was an admirable haul, though, and enough - with positive reviews - to prompt Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel.

However, four years later, it seems interest in the franchise has waned and multiple release date delays are unlikely to have helped matters. Throw in the fact people know the DCEU will soon be rebooted as the DCU, and it's hardly surprising that Shazam! Fury of the Gods may underwhelm financially.

While Wonder Woman 1984 ($16.7 million) and The Suicide Squad ($26.2 million) debuted with dismal openings, that's down to the pandemic and day-and-date releases on HBO Max. Shazam! Fury of the Gods will open right above Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey and likely below Shazam!, making it one of the DCEU's worst debuts to date.

For comparison's sake, Black Adam opened to $67 million last October and was deemed a disappointment.

With Shazam! Fury of the Gods arriving in theaters weeks after Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, it should hit #1 no matter what happens. However, it will soon face stiff competition from John Wick: Chapter 4 and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The marketing campaign for this has has been poor and that's thought to be due to Warner Bros. Discovery's lack of funds.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to be released on March 17, 2023.

Well first one didn't make that much either, but looks like the move from Decemeber out of Avatars way wasn't that helpful after all... let's see.

I liked the first Captain Marvel. What about this movie looks promising? They've already used his ace in the hole in an abysmal Black Adam origin story. Now what? Again, I like the first movie, but what in this plot of a sequel makes me - "anyone" - want to see this?

@videovac - to be honest I feel if they had to make a part 3. Bringing the rock back would be the only way to get interest. Neither of them can sell it on their own is seems. But I feel Fury of the God's will be more enjoyable than Black Adam regardless.

@UnderBelly, By having the characters in this Captain Marvel sequel be faithful to their comic book counterparts, you're already surpassing the low bar that Black Adam's piss on the source material was. Your f_cking post is better than Black Adam. The Rock turned Black Adam into a hero. That's all the f_ck you need to know about how bad Black Adam was from conception. Dwayne totally shitted on the character, and those numb skulls at Warner Brothers let him.

@videovac - how in the world is Shazam 2 more comic accurate, it has new characters made specifically for the film and not found in the comics

Opening night has maybe 30 percent for the first showings in my area, that's atrocious

Sandberg deserves better!

And that’s precisely why they need James Gunn and the new interconnected universe. These movies are living and usually dying without any boost from the overall franchise. Superman: Legacy can’t get here soon enough.

I already got my tickets for opening night and plans to see it again a few days later so they should probably add like twenty bucks to that estimate.

That's a shame, I wanted it to destroy Ant-Man 3 at the box office.

It sucks, but it is what it is. I know I'll try to watch it in a theatre when it comes out, that's all that matters to me

Shame because the first one is great, but with all that is going on at DC and the train wreck that was Black Adam this was predictable

The first one barely broke even, and that was because it was really cheap, and critics loved it.
This looks more expensive, and lets face, between the trailers and the leaks, it looks like hot garbage...let alone the first one came out before the pandemic, when people were open to "risk" seeing a movie they were not sure of its quality...

Been saying this for months, this might be one of the the biggest bombs of the year.
