An extended scene from Shazam! Fury of the Gods has found its way online, and it's packed full of references to the DC Extended Universe.
That reality's days are, of course, numbered. The Flash is potentially going to bring that to an end, though Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be the final movie released from the pre-DC Studios era this December. After that, the world is being rebooted as the DCU, with James Gunn and Peter Safran spearheading a new slate of projects.
Prior to the Shazam! sequel's release, filmmaker David F. Sandberg said there was nothing in this movie that would contradict its potential place in the DCU.
Well, in this clip, Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) talk about Batman protecting Gotham City as its only superhero, comments that fly in the face of what we know about The Brave and the Bold. It's already been confirmed that the movie will include Robin and members of the Bat-Family.
Crucially, Freddy also references the events of Justice League when he says, "When there's a real threat, a big threat, like giant portals in the sky, weird insect-like drone armies, pissed off aliens, that's when they come together. That's when the team unites."
This part of the conversation may have been cut to save time, though we can't help but wonder whether the decision was made to scrap it in case the Shazam! franchise was ultimately folded into the DCU.
The sequel was relatively light on Easter Eggs beyond a post-credits scene that loosely tied Shazam! Fury of the Gods to Black Adam.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods arrived on Digital earlier this month. The sequel will then hit 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on Tuesday, May 23.
