SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Director Says "The Possibility Of More Shazam Is There"

Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg was asked about the possibility of a third movie, and it sounds like there is a chance Zachary Levi could stay on as the character in the DCU...

We know that Henry Cavill is out as Superman and the DCU will also be getting a new Batman, but DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran still haven't provided any definitive answers when it comes to most of the other "SnyderVerse era" actors.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi seemed confident that he'd be staying on as the hero at first, but soon admitted that his future as the Big Red Cheese was far from certain. Now, the DC Comics sequel's director has weighed in.

David F. Sandberg was asked whether "Shazam will have a role in future DCU" on Twitter, and it sounds like the potential is there - if Fury of the Gods is a big enough box office success.

"He definitely won’t if people don’t go see the movie," responded the filmmaker. "What I’ve been told is that there’s nothing in the Shazam films that contradict the future plans for DC. So the possibility for more Shazam is there and if that’s what you want your best bet is to go see the film."

So, as long as these upcoming movies/characters don't contradict Gunn and Safran's plans, they might be safe? Probably best not to assume anything, but it certainly sounds like Shazam may fly again.

"Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world."

From New Line Cinema comes Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars returning cast members Zachary Levi (Thor: Ragnarok) as Shazam; Asher Angel (Andi Mack) as Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer (It Chapter Two) as Freddy Freeman; Adam Brody (Promising Young Woman) as Super Hero Freddy; Ross Butler (Raya and the Last Dragon) as Super Hero Eugene; Meagan Good (Day Shift) as Super Hero Darla; D.J. Cotrona (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) as Super Hero Pedro; Grace Caroline Currey (Annabelle: Creation) as Mary Bromfield / Super Hero Mary; Faithe Herman (This Is Us) as Darla Dudley; Ian Chen (A Dog’s Journey) as Eugene Choi; Jovan Armand (Second Chances) as Pedro Pena; Marta Milans (White Lines) as Rosa Vasquez; Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) as Victor Vasquez; with Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place Part II) as Wizard.

Joining the cast are Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), with Lucy Liu (Kung Fu Panda franchise) and Helen Mirren (F9: The Fast Saga).

The superhero sequel is set to hit theaters on March 17, 2023.

Yes, he said "the possibility is there" and then pointed to the trash can in the corner of the room. Pretty important detail...

I am still bummed that this isn't a Mr. Mind follow-up. That little grub is so menacing!

I think I may see this in theaters instead of Quantumania though. I'd rather be able to go in with low expectations instead of chasing the inevitable disappointment of "The Volume: The Movie."

@TheRose - Yeah, seems weird they would make a sequel and nit focus on one of Shazam's popular villains.

Sivana was in the first one, and they even teased Mr. Mind. I'm guessing they thought he was too out there for a main villain in a movie? Who knows.

It's just crazy we'll likely never get to see Shazam vs Black Adam.

@CorndogBurglar - think we'll never get to see Levi's Shazam vs Johnson's Black Adam, and I don't mind that at all. But a Shazam vs Black Adam isn't off the table yet/

As for Mr Mind, I guess it makes sense he's too out there. But it could work if he's pulling the strings.

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah, that's true. We could see Levi's Shazam against a different Black Adam. Which is probably favorable lol.

The logic behind "the future for this franchise is uncertain, therefore I don't feel like watching this movie" is something that I just can't understand. Bruh I watch movies because I want to be entertained for a couple of hours.

@Fares - yeah. The mcu has warped people's perception of movies. These aren't investments or anything. They're just movies.

@Fares - "I watch movies because I want to be entertained for a couple of hours."

I thought I was going crazy seeing people's comments about not watching this movie just because it might not be setting something up for later smh.

As expected. Think it goes for Flash and Aquaman as well. If the reception is good, they get to return. And if they don't do as well as expected, they get the (re)boot

If they continue with Shazam and it does not do well it will fly in the face of everything WB stated about giving fans what they want. It will expose the fraud.
Origame
Origame - 2/28/2023, 9:44 AM
@Forthas - ...what do you mean? It's stated here more Shazam will only come if people show they want to see it by going to the movies.

You can't just know what people want. You have to produce products and see what people want to see vs what they don't.
Forthas
Forthas - 2/28/2023, 3:32 PM
@Origame - First, everything that WB has said has wound up being false. They said that there would be no duplicate characters...it turns out there will be multiple Batmen....they said all of their DC properties would be connected...we found out that Joker and The Batman will not be.

My point is that if it does fail and they still make more Shazam movies (again contradicting themselves) then it will show shameless nepotism as the driver of their decisions which is why they are in the situation they are in now.

It’s pretty obvious DC doesn’t want to say these next couple of movies don’t matter but from everything being said by the people working on these films it seems like they all have to act like these characters might have a future past the film they’re trying to get you to see but in reality they’re most likely done after these films.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 2/28/2023, 9:22 AM
It does feel like a shame if we lose the character of Shazam because of the many mistakes of lesser movies including the last DC movie which should have pumped up Fury of the Gods instead of completely ignoring it. Luckily there are people in charge now that won’t let that happen in the future. Sad if they came too late to save Shazam though.

I want to like these movies, love Zach Levi and Shazam is cool and has great potential to be an awesome movie hero, but unfortunately the movie is about "Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos".

@WarMonkey - what you described is like the natural continuation of Shazam as a character.

The best thing this franchise could ever hope for is to be rebooted as a TV series with younger actors that runs until they all hit 18 and then segues into a Tawny Tiger/Shazam movie franchise.

So that’s a no then lol. I hope Shazam is a part of the new DCU but I’m fine without Levi or Sandberg. I never liked Levi in the role and this second movie looks mediocre at best. Just reboot and give me Alan Ritchson as Shazam

@Ha1frican - Meh I rather see Alan as DC's Cap. Atom, Booster Gold, or Hal Jordan

@HAUSMAN01 - Never really liked Captain Atom tbh, not sure why I’ve just never seen him be interesting in anything. I think he’s far too big for Booster or Hal. Watch him in Reacher he’s MASSIVE, he would probably dwarf whoever they got as Superman, but also has the comedic chops to pull of being Billy
