Shazam: Fury of the Gods soars into theaters this week following a lengthy pre-production and delays caused by COVID-19. Unfortunately, for many, the sequel to the critically acclaimed first film has failed to capture the same spirit. Though there are a lot of issues one could pointed to, this episode of Journey Through Cinema will focus on what I consider to be one of the largest issues that has prevented it from connecting with audiences. It all comes down to a betrayal of the high concept idea that served as the franchise’s launchpad.
From New Line Cinema comes “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.
