SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Is Going To Be 2023's Third Superhero Movie Released In China

Following the news that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania have secured release dates in China, it appears Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be next. Read on for details...

In recent years, China has significantly reduced the number of Hollywood movies released there. However, between strict COVID protocols and a lack of titles that appeal to wider audiences, theaters in the Middle Kingdom are nearing bankruptcy, with the entire industry potentially on the brink of collapse.

That would explain the recent decision to allow both Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania to be released there, and it seems Shazam! Fury of the Gods is next!

An outlet affiliated with the Chinese government has confirmed the news, though we don't currently have a release date. Still, this bodes well for the Shazam! sequel, especially with so much uncertainty surrounding the likelihood of actors and characters from the DCEU making the leap to DC Studios' new DCU.

It was easy to bid Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson farewell after that movie flopped, but if Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a mega-hit, then Zachary Levi may well get the chance to stick around as the Big Red Cheese.

Those box office numbers will be worth keeping an eye on, that's for sure...

Shazam! Fury of the Gods continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word "SHAZAM!," is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.

The sequel's cast includes Zachary Levi as Shazam, Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Adam Brody as Super Hero Freddy, Ross Butler as Super Hero Eugene, Meagan Good as Super Hero Darla, D.J. Cotrona as Super Hero Pedro, Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield/Super Hero Mary.

Djimon Hounsou returns as the Wizard, while Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren have all joined the movie as newly created villains.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to be released on March 17, 2023.

I though movies showing magic were banned there.

I think it'd be dope asf if Shazam and his family turned out to be the villains and didn't even know it, or maybe at least one of them actually knows.

@Blastaar - ...you want the children to be villains?

@Origame - Yeah, manipulated. I think it makes for better writing. In other words, not outright villains, but for them to be used but not know it.
Origame
Origame - 1/19/2023, 2:40 PM
@Blastaar - so...not villains. Because there is a villain manipulating them.
Blastaar
Blastaar - 1/19/2023, 3:21 PM
@Origame - Yeah, not the true villains, but that they've gone too far in, to not feel guilty about the evil they caused unknowingly. It WOULD be interesting to reveal that actually ONE of them IS evil though or actually knows.

@Blastaar - ...but you're not a villain if you don't know.

As for the one who does know, that contradicts the first movie where it's established the Shazam family has the ability to resist the temptations of evil.

@Origame - With magic, anything is possible. Illusions, etc. I think that why so far for ME, it's just boring asf, not to have something shaken up within the paradigm of just good guys & bad guys, and with the family, something needs to tear them up on a psychological level, take the narrative a little deeper.

And YES, you CAN for SURE be a villain and not know it, that's what MOST villains are anyway, individuals who think that they are right, or making the right choices, individuals who sometimes don't even know that their decision is not good one, it's not always simple good vs evil.

@Origame - That's why you need someone who is sort of disagreeable and in in that thin line between good/evil to be able to know see disagreeableness. That's why it's good to have an anti-hero around, anti-heroes know the minds of villains because they ride that thin line. Many times straight up good/clean heroes don't have a clue what goes on in the minds of villains and that's a disadvantage. That's why it's great to have a character like Black Adam show up and tell Shazam he's being shafted, and that somebody in his ranks/family is not who they say they are.

@Origame - This would go perfectly with the naivety, and childlike mind of Shazam, not knowing what's REALY going on. This would inevitably make Shazam & Black Adam fight, but it'd be a great learning lesson for Shazam, as child in a man's body who has to grow up fast and understand some complexities.

They big family and The Rock ruined this franchise. No idea why they followed Geoff Johns shitty backups as a basis, but here we are. A sequel with 6 Shazam’s and some made up villains played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Lui. Yay.

@TheCoonII - yes, because James Cameron made the avatar franchise to end comic book movies 🙄

Also, don't think I forgot you gave that hot take that no mcu fan would support avatar 2.

First one did about $44m there, which almost twice what The Batman did just last year. Not as big of a market as it is for Marvel. Black Adam didn't even get a release there.

It does seem like they are sending this out to die a bit. I have gotten the same old Comic Con trailer in every film I've gone too since, but the new trailer we're supposed to be getting at the end of the month is gonna be vital. Really, really liked the first film and I'm on the camp wishing Shazam sticks around.
