SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS' Rachel Zegler Gives Hilariously Honest Answer When Asked Why She Joined The Cast

Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Rachel Zegler was asked why she decided to join the cast of the sequel while being interviewed on the red carpet, and gave a brutally honest response!

Rachel Zegler will make her DCEU/DCU debut as powerful Daughter of Atlas Anthea in Shazam! Fury of the Gods this weekend (you can check out our review here), and the actress gave a hilariously honest response when asked why she joined the cast while being interviewed on the red carpet of the sequel's recent LA premiere.

Zegler shot to fame after appearing as Maria in Steven Spielberg's 2021 West Side Story remake, and is sure to have had her pick of roles after her highly-praised performance. However, the actress tells THR that she decided to "step into this world of DC heroes" because she "needed a job."

Though Zegler is adamant that she's "so serious," something tells is she's at least half joking!

Serious or not, Zegler is a highlight of the DC Comics movie, so we hope to see her stay on as Anthea when the new DCU slate gets underway.

Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.

From New Line Cinema comes Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars returning cast members Zachary Levi (Thor: Ragnarok) as Shazam; Asher Angel (Andi Mack) as Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer (It Chapter Two) as Freddy Freeman; Adam Brody (Promising Young Woman) as Super Hero Freddy; Ross Butler (Raya and the Last Dragon) as Super Hero Eugene; Meagan Good (Day Shift) as Super Hero Darla; D.J. Cotrona (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) as Super Hero Pedro; Grace Caroline Currey (Annabelle: Creation) as Mary Bromfield / Super Hero Mary; Faithe Herman (This Is Us) as Darla Dudley; Ian Chen (A Dog’s Journey) as Eugene Choi; Jovan Armand (Second Chances) as Pedro Pena; Marta Milans (White Lines) as Rosa Vasquez; Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) as Victor Vasquez; with Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place Part II) as Wizard.

Joining the cast are Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), with Lucy Liu (Kung Fu Panda franchise) and Helen Mirren (F9: The Fast Saga).

The superhero sequel is set to hit theaters on March 17, 2023.

She gets my respect. Nothing wrong with that.

This is not some artistic endeavor, the whole reason of the existence of this movie is to make money for WB.

@Usernametaken - Even if the movie isn't exactly Citizen Kane, I would find it more respectable if she wouldn't throw shade against it. Not really fair to all the other people connected to it and who ACTUALLY need the job.

@Drace24 - Again with this?
You really have an issue with people talking about work.
Are you going to again serve us your rant about you working in childcare for 5000 a year and how much you're jealous of people making more?

Acting is a job, nothing wrong with her calling it that.

@Usernametaken - ...Okay? That does not really have anything to do with what I said.
Rachel Zegler is a very unpleasent person who constantly badmouths other people, like she kinda did here. And I just don't find that very respectable. I'm sure the movie is just a quick cashgrab for her. But maybe she could not blurt that out to the press like that? Cuz, again, a lot of people actually need it to do well?

@Drace24 - I don’t know anything about her, I don’t follow celebrities on social media either and I’m only interested in their work or what they have to say about their work.
The rest is none of my business as she is not someone I know, I don’t judge her personally.
It’s a rule I have for everybody on the internet.

But anyway, for whatever the reason she said this, her personal reasons doesn’t affect the situation of other people who worked on it. For most of them, it was just a job too.

It’s a mindless blockbuster superhero movie that doesn’t even try a little to bring something to the genre.

The people who work on it needs to hear it, WB needs to hear it, the fans also needs to hear it.

So you might not like her, okay, the cast and crew might not like her either, the studio might also be pissed. But the studio, and the director decided to hire her, for whatever reason they did, it’s their problem.

But I, for one, won’t judge someone for telling the truth, however blunt this truth might be, it’s still the truth.

So yeah, next time maybe they should hire an actor who cares, but they should also care to make better movies too.

@Usernametaken - That's a lot of paragraphs for saying nothing at all.
Look it's not hard. People in the movie industry usually get payed based on the success of the project. Not just the cast and director, but also the staff, the camera crew, the costume designers, the editors working crunchtime. And when one of the actresses ridicules the movie in front of the press that might absolutely harm its success. And even if it doesn't, it's still just kind of a dick move towards the people who are not rich award winning Hollywood starletts with lots of high profile projects in the pipeline.

You said you find that respectable. I do not.
The end.

Honest? ...You guys are aware that she is rich, right? She played in an award winning Spielberg movie and has several upcoming roles in big budget projects, including one of these Disney live-action reboots. There is no way she is just so desperate for a job to feed her family or whatever.

"I'm totally one of you guys!"
Ugh.
