SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Writer Reveals Why Doctor Sivana And Mister Mind Are Absent From The Sequel

Shazam!'s mid-credits scene saw Mister Mind make his live-action debut to align himself with Doctor Sivana, but neither will appear in Fury of the Gods. Here's an explanation from the movie's writer...

Excitement for Shazam! Fury of the Gods appears to be relatively muted, and at least part of that may be down to the sequel's villains. While we're excited to see what Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren bring to the table as the Daughters of Atlas, the newly created trio haven't necessarily thrilled comic book fans.

Shazam has a decent rogues gallery and the first movie's mid-credits scene suggested we'd get to see Mister Mind take centre stage alongside the returning Doctor Sivana in a sequel. Unfortunately, that won't happen.

Talking to Cinema Blend, Shazam! Fury of the Gods writer Henry Gayden offered an explanation for their absence.

"There was a long period of developing it and going down various alleys, like who the villain is, Sivana, Mister Mind, all these things that we did...It was a few months. And it was really fun. But what ended up happening is it felt redundant with the first movie."

"Because despite Mister Mind being a fascinating new edition, it still was a lot of Sivana and Billy, and it didn’t feel like it was telling an emotional next instalment," the writer continues. "It just felt like it was telling the natural next instalment, action-wise."

"So emotionally, when we got to the sisters and the Daughters of Atlas, it was about like, ‘How do we get these powers? Do we deserve them?’ Questioning that, and really telling that story was much more compelling than continuing the Sivana story right now."

While we can definitely see where Gayden is coming from here, it still feels like a missed opportunity not to do something with Mister Mind. There's always a chance he'll appear in another post-credits scene, of course, but a third movie isn't likely under the purview of DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The latter produces the Shazam! franchise, but with the sequel eyeing a dismal opening weekend, it might be hard to justify a threequel in the new DCU.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods arrives in theaters on March 17.

Yeah because we really needed another superhero to lose their powers in the second movie. I wish that trope would die.

Does somewhat cripple the franchise a little the the characters biggest villain couldn’t be used because the Rock wanted a vanity project

@Twenty23Three - Crazy because I do think had the Rock been in a movie as competent as the first Shazam then things would be very different.

@OmegaBlack13 - when I script has to be written around a man’s ego, a competent script is never going to happen

@Twenty23Three - By a competent movie I mean a sequel to Shazam that’s as solid as the first. The Rock isn’t untouchable but he does have starpower. Bringing that to this sequel could’ve really done a lot.

We all know the who villain was meant to be for the first and second movie, but The Rock happened, so…

I love Shazam, yet hate this portrayal of the character.

Zachary Levi sucks in the role.

It was a huge mistake to use the villains they did. This movie looks ducking awful and I hope they learn their lesson when this fails so hard. You make a comic book movie, you use comic book villains. Simple as that. Don’t make up your own shitty villains like Henry Gayden did. This movie is DOA and I’m glad

I love the Shazam character. Time will tell with the movie, but I was hoping they used more familiar villians. I just hope it's good!

This franchise really illustrates why someone with vision was needed to take charge over DC movies. Obviously Mr. Mind should have been the villain for a sequel unless they were planning going balls out Monster Society of Evil for the third installment. But far more glaring was the no mentions of Shazam in Black Adam. The two franchises needed to be connected at the hip. And to set that stage for some kind of Shazam versus Black Adam movie. We should have absolutely seen Shazam somewhere in the trailers for Black Adam and we should have absolutely seen Black Adam somewhere in the trailers for Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

If this is the end of the franchise for now though I am happy that we got at least two movies for a superhero as great as Shazam plus the sidequel.

There is no greater example of how creatively disconnected the DCEU was than the fact that Black Adam isn’t mentioned as a possibility for a Shazam film….despite already having developed him in his own spin off.

Having a talking worm team up with a super powered magical villain was too redundant, so his solution to the problem was to take out the one thing that was actually unique, AKA the talking worm, and replace him with another super powered magical villain.

This guy's brain works in mysterious ways.

I wonder how long it's going to be before we get a proper Shazam vs. Black Adam movie.

And I wonder how close we got to having that this time around before it all imploded.
