SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Shifts Release Dates To Avoid Clash With AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Shifts Release Dates To Avoid Clash With AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER

With Avatar: The Way of Water likely to break box office records this December, Warner Bros. has understandably decided to make a slight change to Shazam! Fury of the Gods' release date. Check it out...

When Warner Bros. made some changes to its DC slate, The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ended up being pushed into 2023. The bad news was accompanied by some good, though, as Shazam! Fury of the Gods was brought forward to this December, with a bold release date that meant it would go head to head with Avatar: The Way of Water on the 16th.

The Avatar sequel stole the show during Disney's CinemaCon presentation, and it appears Warner Bros. has had second thoughts about trying to compete with James Cameron's 3D epic.

As you can see below, it's been confirmed that Shazam! Fury of the Gods will now open on December 21 instead of December 16 as previously planned. While there's only a few days between them, it should help the Shazam! follow-up avoid being completely overshadowed at the box office.

However, given the competition posed by Avatar: The Way of Water, it's unlikely the DC Comics movie will ever reach the #1 mark domestically or globally.

Despite this minor delay, Shazam! Fury of the Gods heading our way this December is a major bonus for fans seeing as it was previously scheduled for next June. Footage from the sequel was showcased by Warner Bros. earlier this week, confirming that Gal Gadot will appear in the sequel as Wonder Woman (and, unlike Superman, we'll actually get to see her head).

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will arrive in theaters on December 16 December 21.

I really don't get why they switched Aquaman and Shazam around. Going off the first entries for both, I guess Aquaman would stand a far better chance against Avatar.

But if they want a smaller movie going against Avatar, why not Batgirl (given that it has atleast a partial christmas setting)?

@bkmeijer1 - Hot take, but I think Aquaman 2 would've beaten Avatar 2.

@TheHumanSpider2 - maybe not beaten, but I think definitely close

@bkmeijer1 - Aquaman’s delay could be Amber Heard related.

@bkmeijer1 - But people will be boycotting aquaman2 because of amber heard and I day that as someone who loves aquaman 1 and still plans to boycott it

@bkmeijer1 - Most likely Aquaman 2 got delayed due to reshoots. Trilith Studios in Atlanta is the most popular movie set for VFX heavy films because it has a huge set and is fully booked for the year. Black Adam moved 3 months from its original June/July date because they could not secure that studio for reshoots. Marvel had it booked for a couple of months now due to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 so WB pushed Black Adam to have more time during post to do reshoots and vfx.

@mastakilla39 - that makes a ton of sense. Didn't think about logistics at all

I honestly think avatar 2 will still beat Shazam 2 on it's second weekend😐

@AmazingFILMporg - I honestly don’t feel that. I could be wrong obviously, but with the leaps and bounds movies have made in the years between this sequel and the first film, I don’t see this movie having the same impact at all. I’ll be honest, if it makes a billion at the BO, I’d be surprised

Avatar 2 will be huge. First and foremost it's James Cameron. He is the sequel GOD!

Secondly we have been waiting for years. Even the haters will be interested to see how bad or great it is.

And thirdly and possibly the most important is the 3D angle. It will cost more per ticket and 3D has died down since then so when it comes back for avatar 2 it will be an event. I can see a bunch of people just wanting to go just for the 3D experience 💪

It's gonna be huge.

@AmazingFILMporg - I just don’t see that being possible. 3d isn’t some sort of brand new tech the GA will finally be privy too. And On the whole for me personally, the best of cameron is over with. It’s a shame too, because he was the hit maker for the 80’s and 90’s, but his last two movies? Mediocrity. Disguised by heavy effects. I’m afraid Cameron’s lost his touch.

It's definitely a personal thing with you.

You show anyone Cameron's resume and it's a instant must see💪❤️💪

@AmazingFILMporg - I guess it is me. The last film of Cameron’s I loved is true lies. I didn’t care for the titanic, and for the life of me I cannot get through avatar. Three times I’ve tried, and all three I fell asleep. I seriously have no clue how that movie ends.

It’s still gonna beat Shazam’s ass. What’s a few days really when going up against Avatar? It’s a shame.

@GhostDog - In pandemic era, movies are making most of their BO numbers on the opening weekend, going against Avatar 2 was suicide.

HAHAHA mofos got scared when that footage dropped at cinema con.

But honestly how did they not see that problem before, even when Aquaman had the release date? WB/new Line/ DC are just guessing their way through these last couple years.

They'd be better off releasing it before Avatar as it's still going to kill on its second weekend.

@UnderBelly - either before or several months after like in March or February.

I legit think Disney is kinda glad to avoid the competition.

And while I still think Avatar 2 will fail, is still the sequel to the highest grossing movie of all times, it will make a shit ton of money.

UnderBelly - 4/28/2022, 9:29 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - how is that a fail then?
kylo0607

Wise decision lol

But will most likely still get beaten by Avatar 2's second weekend.
