Earlier this year at CinemaCon, Sony Pictures announced that a movie focusing on relatively obscure Spider-Man character El Muerto was in development, and the project has now enlisted a writer and director.
According to The Wrap, Mexican filmmaker Jonás Cuarón will helm the movie, while Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Blue Beetle) is currently working on the script.
Jonás, who is the son of Academy Award-winner Alfonso Cuarón, previously directed 2015's Desierto starring Gael García Bernal.
The Spider-Man adjacent spinoff will star Latin Grammy winner and platinum-selling recording artist Bad Bunny as superpowered Luchador Juan Carlos Sanchez. The character only made a few appearances in the comic books, but the studio evidently decided to expand on his history in order to accommodate Bad Bunny, who was said to be searching for the "right superhero property for himself."
El Muerto will be the first Latino superhero to headline his own movie in Sony's Marvel Universe, which also includes upcoming releases Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter and Spider-Woman. A third Venom movie has also been confirmed to be in development, along with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Parts 1 and 2.
Bad Bunny, aka Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, made his acting debut in recent action flick Bullet Train, and also has some wrestling experience having competed in two high-profile matches in WWE.
El Muerto may seem like an unusual choice to lead his own standalone film, but fans are used to Sony Pictures making odd decisions at this stage. Maybe there's still hope for that solo Aunt May movie?
