Sony Pictures continues to assemble a talented cast for its upcoming Madame Web movie, and the latest addition to the (so far) all-female ensemble is Isabela Merced.
No details on her role were provided, but the 20-year-old Transformers: The Last Knight actress will join Dakota Johnson in the title role, along with Euphoria breakout Sydney Sweeney and Ghostbusters: Afterlife's Celeste O'Connor.
Based on the Marvel Comics series by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr., this latest "SPUMC" movie is being developed as an origin story for the clairvoyant hero, "whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world."
Very little has been revealed about the project beyond this, but Deadline does mention that because "Madame Web never actively fought any villains," the film "could turn into something else."
From what we can gather, Sony Pictures is looking to introduce its own take on Doctor Strange.
In addition to the most recent Transformers film, Merced has appeared in the likes of Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Instant Family. She also played the title role in Dora and the Lost City of Gold.
S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) will direct from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Madame Web was recently given an official release date, and is set to hit theaters on July 7, 2023.
