MORBIUS Star Matt Smith Says The Movie "Was Thrown Under The Bus" And "Didn't Quite Work Out"

Morbius was a critical and commercial flop, and Matt Smith (House of the Dragon) has now shared his thoughts on where it all went wrong for Sony Pictures' latest Marvel Comics adaptation. Check it out!

Matt Smith made a name for himself starring in Doctor Who, but he's struggled to carry that success over to Hollywood. Terminator Genisys was a flop, while his performance in Morbius earlier this year, well, it's been widely ridiculed.

The sight of him dancing around as "Milo" isn't one that we'll soon forget, and while some felt he was a highlight in an otherwise terrible movie, the Marvel Comics adaptation did him no favours. Now, he's hoping to bounce back with HBO Max's House of the Dragon, but commented on Morbius' failings during a recent interview with Rolling Stone.

"Yeah, it was thrown under the bus," Smith said of the critical and commercial response to the movie. "But you just have to roll with it. What else are you gonna do? It’s a film, at the end of the day, we’re not saving lives. For whatever reason, it didn’t quite work out and...It is what it is."

The actor made his feelings about the movie a little clearer during a recent Q&A attended by ComicBook.com

When a fan mentioned the popular "It's Morbin' Time" meme, Smith expressed confusion, only to then have it explained to him that it's become a calling card for those who enjoyed Morbius. To that, he responded, "I’m glad you watched a completely different movie than I did."

Smith isn't the only actor dissatisfied with the finished product, as co-star Al Madrigal expressed similar frustrations during an interview with us back in April. "I got butchered in that thing. I think that’s what they did," he said. "They just really…because of COVID, they just had so much time to mess with it. They really messed with it."

There's been no word on a Morbius sequel, and we can't imagine Jared Leto plans to reprise the role of this Living Vampire. The movie ended with The Vulture recruiting Morbius to a heroic Sinister Six, a concept fans have since rejected. Whether Sony will take note remains to be seen.
