CBM Pizza Pow-Wow Ponders the Demise of Spider-Man’s Franchise

With news that Spider-Man is being rebooted, a few of us got together to figure out what exactly Spider-Man 3 did to kill the franchise – and Tony’s Pizza sponsored the event!

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Tony's Pizza. All opinions are 100% mine!

Tony's Pizza was kind enough to send us FREE coupons to sponsor a little get together so that we could try their new “Crispy Crust” pizzas and announce a $500 Entertainment Prize Pack they’re giving away. So, we decided to make a party of it and re-watch Spider-Man 3 whilst eating the aforementioned pizzas (we even fed some of those poor starving kids in the picture).

Here's a link to the offical rules.

So, why did Spider-Man 3 fail with so many fans? After a few hours of debate and eight pizzas to the wind (they weren’t as big as we had hoped, but you can’t beat the price), we agreed on the following:

“Bad Boy” Peter Parker sucked!
We’re referencing all of the “Bad” Peter Parker scenes of the film, not just the bad hairdo.

If you want him to be a bad guy, make him a bad guy. Dressing him in black, giving him a bad hair day and having him act retarded DOESN’T make him a bad guy. It makes him a dork.

We love Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Spider-Man, but I don’t think it’s possible for him to ever come across as a bad guy.

Underdeveloped Villains
We love Sandman and Venom, but they did a poor job of developing both. Not only that, but they couldn’t seem to decide whether or not you should hate Sandman or feel sorry for him… Is he the bad guy or not?

They barely touch on Spider-Man ruining Brock’s reputation as a journalist, but why change it so drastically from the comics? According to the movie the symbiote bonded with him because he just happened to be there when Spider-Man got rid of it. Why not mention that he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and that’s why he was in the church (because he was pondering suicide, NOT just because he hated Spider-Man and wanted the Lord’s help to destroy him)?

Eddie Brock Is Supposed To Be Tough!
Let’s face it, Venom is supposed to be twice as big as Spider-Man. I like Topher Grace, and actually think his acting wasn’t bad, but he just doesn’t have the size to be Eddie Brock/Venom.

In the end we had had a fun little get-together to stuff our faces with pizza and watch the movie again. While Spider-Man 3 wasn't our favorite movie of the franchise (so far), we agreed that the special effects were pretty good, it was pretty entertaining (unless you're a big-time Spider-Man fan), but with just a few changes the film could have been Spectacular (pun intended!).

With all of that being said, where do you stand? Was Spider-Man 3 the nail in the coffin? Is it time to let in some fresh air? Let us know below!

SPIDER-MAN 3 failed coz it was um poo poo.

Going back to day one is still a [frick]ing bad idea, unless they do the origin as flashbacks, i.e. INCREDIBLE HULK, sick of Origin movies on done movies!

Mmmm, i fancy PIZZA now! : P

P.S. I actually like the SANDMAN character in it, the character had heart an soul though VENOM did suck yes, but mainly coz they used the ULTIMATE version!

I was disappointed in Spdiey 3 'cause of the
contrivances and miscasting! Sandman being
involved in Parker's Uncle's death was so
contrived to actually appear like it was shoved
shoehorn-like into the story! It wasn't even a
thinly disguised contrivance! It was visibly
forced! Bad, bad writing!

And Sandman is an evil gloating villain not
a victim of circumstance! To make him sympathetic
was PATHETIC and completely wrrong!

And Topher Grace as Eddie Brock as Venom! Worst
miscasting since Schwarzengegger as Mr. Freeze!

Raimi and the writers blew this big-time! It wasn't
just the trying to squeeze in too many super-villains!
It was mainly the plot and bad writing and miscast
actors!

Like you said Leee@, BIG STEAMING PILE OF POO!!!!

Personally I think the thing that hurt the movie was Venom. They just did it totally wrong. Could have done without Emo parker.

I thought they pussed Sandman out. Sure he had heart, but he needs to do evil things for his own good, not blaming it on a kid. Why not just get a job? Venom was the biggest let down. He's my fave and they had that douche bag Topher Grace play him. C'mon. He should have been a big tough guy that looked kinda like a football player turned photog. Back in the day, Wizard magazine picked Howie Long as the perfect Eddie, and I concur, although, nowadays, there are a lot better choices. The only thing I remember about Venom is when he says, "Hey Parker!" Grrr. Raimi should have forgone the terribly written villains for something that fans have been calling for since we heard his name mentioned in the first movie, and he showed up in the second. We want the effin' Lizard! Now with the technology and CG of Avatar, a believable lizard man could be a reality. Sony, if you're not going to give it to us, give the movie rights to Marvel and they will please the fans. For the love of Pete, we deserve it!

hated emo Parker, hated the fight scenes, hated mj and how they did harry osborne, and c'mon... lets be serious. venom needs to have a spot light. no secondary villains when he is in the picture and for sure don't make HIM a secondary villain. its like sandman was the main baddy and they just tossed venom into the ring. there should be 1 movie dedicated to Parker wearing the costume then he gets it off right at the end and then it bonds with Brock to set up the next one. shit man everyone else knew that. why didn't Sony?
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 1/15/2010, 12:47 AM
venomous @ Exactly, i just don't trust SONY man, and i wont go into the REBOOT thing either again, i think most know my feelings on that lol, though why cant they forget 3 and just carry on with a reboot for 4???

Im more interested to know what this means to the VENOM movie???? Really wanna see that, they already said it was going to ignore SPIDER-MAN 3 and have a new actor for VENOM, if this reboot [frick]s up that film, Sh1t truly will hit the fan here....

Maybe they could tie in the Venom movie with the new Spider-Man reboot? done right of course..

@LEE: Yeah Sandman was excellent, if they left Venom for the next movie just as he rejects the suit, the franchise could've been saved.
RinjoClans
RinjoClans - 1/15/2010, 12:56 AM
I think the animated series covered the symbiote and venom a thousand times better than the movie did, jameson's son, john, the astronaut, brings back a valuable mineral from space but ends up crash landing on the manhattan bridge when spider-man comes to the rescue and the symbiote (attached to the space rock of course) attaches itself to the spider-suit in the process, starting a chain reaction leading to the birth of venom.

In the movie?

a meteor hits central park while peter happens to drive by on his scooter

@ lee dude i was wondering the same thing about the venom movie... i was so excited to hear that they were doing their own movie for him but now that they're rebooting this whole series its going to have to push that movie back for a couple reasons... 1 you cant have venom as the first baddie that spiderman faces off against. not ever going to happen if they do 1000 reboots. 2 they wouldn't do a venom movie BEFORE his debut in the next spidey saga. 3 now that they've chosen to reboot the series they will put their collective creative efforts to making sure that spiderman has a kinder fate than he did in the last go around and that again will put venoms solo debut on hold (assuming that Sony has the rights to the property which they might not i actually have no idea)

venomous @ Good points, all i know man, is i was sooo wanting a real VENOM on screen and the VENOM movie promised that!!!

It was going to totally ignore SPIDEY 3 which was a good thing, and be a stand alone movie, hopefully with CARNAGE, if this [frick]ing reboot origins [frick]s that up, i'll have even more hate against it a hundred fold!!!

VENOM is one of my all time MARVEL heroes or anti-heroes if you will, if SONY takes away the VENOM movie, i will hate SONY more than [frick]ing FOX!!

I can see your a huge fan too dude!

We've been promised a VENOM VS CARNAGE for years an years and then news of VENOM was amazing, if the reboot [frick]s this up, theres no way in hell i'll like many will EVER watch it!!

I still say, if they gotta reboot, just ignore [frick]ing 3 an carry on with 4, (Get new actors if they must), [frick] high school and Harry Osborn an stuff, leave the reboot till its back at MARVEL STUDIOS, but thats me lol!

Leee@ I don't trust Sony either!

Oh, how I wish marvel would get back
all their properties! Dang them (a little)
for selling 'em off!

But to reboot everything is wrong in my opinion!
And Spidey in high school sounds like a lame
CW teen TV show!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 1/15/2010, 1:34 AM
One-legged man in a butt-kicking contest lol, thats funny man!!! : D

DDD @ Exactly ppl tend to forget MARVEL selling all their stuff off in the first place, i mean they had too, but they really didn't think the Million dollar deals through...... AT ALL!!!

And with that kinda money, you'd have to be stupid not too lol!

DDD, thats what ive said dude,, Spidey in high school does sound like a lame CW teen TV show! OMG lol!!

I mean they can make a great reboot without going through the same old crap again, seriously, if everything keeps going back, we'll never see no team-up or crossover movies ever bar MARVEL STUDIOS!

Really hoping for the best but us as fans have been let down too many times with CBM's.

Anyway wait for more news i suppose.

Right of to CAP-FIC lol!

P.S. Thanks for putting this up @ Nathan it gives us all a chance to talk about this reboot thing in the right place!

Still new here I guess, first to LEEE777 I'd like to say that Armie Hammer is damn cool, my choice has always been Matt Keeslar from The Middleman, dosen't hurt that he was born about 50 miles from where I grew up and we're both Libra's.

As for Spidy 3? Sure Sandman turned out to be a puss but we must admit that Thomas Haden Church as Sandman was the best casting since J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah. Yes emo Pete is about as dumb as it gets, but at least it's funny right? Between my friends and I we've talked about Bryce Dallas Howard being cast as Gwen Stacy, as for me I was fine with it. Like pretty much everyone else I think that Topher Grace was a poor choice for Eddie Brock and far to small for Brock or Venom, and there Venom was a runt; though Grace was some of the more solid action in the movie. As I see it they really did try to shove to much into the movie (Harry as New Goblin, the origins of Venom, Sandman, and Black Suite Spider-Man; and the love whatever angle it is between Peter, MJ, Stacy, and Brock). There are far worse movie's out there, I gave this an 7/10 on IMDB and can't really see why they would want to go with a reboot. Spidy 3 has a 6.4/10 there and still holds 4 records boxofficemojo.com's all time movies.

As for a reboot WE DON'T WANT ANOTHER ORIGIN. Theres some casting could do better with, some they could only be on par with, but they will NEVER do better then Thomas Haden Church and J.K. Simmons. I guess thats all I have to say.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 1/15/2010, 1:56 AM
DarkOrion @ Cool man thanks!!! Matt Keeslar hmm i do like that too man, he'd work!!

Totally agree about Thomas Haden Church, great actor!!

And totally agree with the sh1tty ULTIMATE casting of Topher Grace was a poor choice for Eddie Brock, damn straight and he was too small for the role, i could never understand that?!

Your right, we will not get better than JK SIMMONS!!!

Great comment dude!

DDD
DDD - 1/15/2010, 2:02 AM
Leee@ I left some more comment on the Armie Hammer casting!

Its not that I don't like Armie for Cap 'cause he is
just about perfect for him! Now that's the way I
picture Steve Rogers in my mind! A tall muscular type-A
personality! He wanted to volunteer for military duty
for his country, he just was too sickly and weak to
physically qualify! He had a brave gung-ho attitude but
just wasn't fit for duty. That's why when they gave him
the super-body he was such a wonderful Cap! Steve has a
heart bigger than TEXAS! LOL

Fisrt things first i want pizza, okay now that is out. Spider man 3 was bad because Venom was a scrawny wuss, Sandman was great, but then they gave green goblin 2 amnesia ugh too much going on they tried to force too much into it, it just ruined the movie not to mention emo spidey.
HouserepresentativeZod
HouserepresentativeZod - 1/15/2010, 2:25 AM
I remember leaving the movie with a strong sense of disappointment, especially since after I left Spider-Man 2, I went out and immediately bought the video game. That was a great day. The day I watched Spider-Man 3 I had to pour one out for the death of Parker's manliness, I mean he cried not once, but I think at last count 5 or 6 times, laughable. On a related note, I wonder in a parallel universe where Spider-Man 4 will actually be made with Raimi in the director's seat, will it be any good?
MercuryWest

the reason it was cancelled is because john malkovich was the vulture and anne hathaway was supposed to be the vulturess (lol) but sony on the other hand wanted the villains to be like carnage and lizard and mysterio and those people so they had all these big arguments about the villains and sam raimi quit then tobey and kristen quit cause they needed a director for sm4

I agree with the article pretty much completely. Although emo Peter didn't even bother me that much. It was a good/funny starting point for bad Spidey, they just needed him to get worse. And, he did smack MJ in the end..yeah yeah nothing near as bad as he should have done but its a damn 12 rated movie, what do you want, rape? Sandman..again, didn't bother me too much. Church was good, the character was different to the comics but not THAT different. He was never an "evil, gloating villain", he was a destructive dumb ass that actually did become a hero for a while and even joined The Avengers..so, how is him being sympathetic in the movie such a stretch? It isn't, just a case of fanboy pedantics. They mad Sandman redeemable because they had Venom as the proper evil [frick]er..but that is where they messed up imo. It wasn't so much what they did with the character, although that sucked, but more his screen time. Fleshed out a bit even that version of Venom may have grown on us a little more. Basically I really enjoyed the movie up until the end..and still think it has a worse name than it deserves..but certainly the worst of the 3.

I feel sorry for you. You had to re-watch Spider-man 3 - while you were eating nonetheless. haha

I can't wait for the reboot. I like Toby as Peter, but I'm getting tired of Raimi's direction - especially how it has become so predictable that Spider-man's mask will be ripped off by the end of the movie. I'm surprised that Peter's secret identity hasn't already been discovered.

Pizza and a bad movie... can't beat it. I disagree with the part about Tobey McGuire playing a "bad guy". I got the chance to watch "Brothers" with my wife. There are parts in there where he was required to be "bad" and the entire time my wife looks at me and says "This is how he should have been in Spiderman 3". Made me smile. My little nerd wife.

Anywho, Venom was crap, Harry was crap. I wanted to like Sandman, but the whole pity party thing at the end made me not like him. You can't chalk it up to the actors when all 4 roles are crap. I just have to blame Raimi at this point.

This has been talked about so much. I mean, I talk about it at least a couple times a month vocally, lol. But, even so. The main thing here is how much of a history Tony's pizza and I have together.
"When I was a young warthog!"
My cousin would always babysit my brothers and I, and we'd have Tony's pizza and watch "A Goofy Movie". We'd have so much fun doing that and sliding on the linoleum floors in our socks and just w/e. So, in conclusion, Tony's Pizza=Good times......even if you're watching "Spider-Man 3" ((as this article proved to be true)) lol

People seem to forget that there were Three villians sandman, venom, and the second green goblin its just hard to make a good story when you have three villians all trying to do the same thing because you cant explain where they come from and why they are doing what they are doing well in the case of sandman they actually had to change the orgin that was set up in the first one to even attempt to give his character depth and that didnt even work out right.

BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 1/15/2010, 8:22 AM
All these combined with the fact that the movie tied up pretty much all loose ends without setting up a new story. There really was no where to go. It's possible that they could have set up a new story arc in Spider-man 4, but people would have wanted to see it more if the end of this one set up a new story. It might have been best to do the New Goblin story, replace Sandman with Lizard (possibly having his transformation tied in with the symbiote) and introduced Eddie Brock, ending the movie with his scene in the church. That way the villains wouldn't have felt underdeveloped because they've already been introduced and there would only be two to spend time developing.
