Over the past few months, Spider-Man: Far From Home has been shooting in a number of locations across the globe including London, Prague, Venice, and New York City. Marvel Studios is extremely secretive with all of its movies but there's nothing they can do about eagle-eyed fans and the paparazzi so a whole lot more has been revealed about this sequel than the studio probably would have liked.
That's good for us, though, as any piece of intel is appreciated - especially in the slow news months which follow San Diego Comic-Con. The question is, what have those photos actually told us?
That's what we're taking a look at here today. From new relationships to costume changes and character/villain details, these set photos and videos have shed plenty of light on where things will go in the Spider-Man: Homecoming follow-up, so click on the "View List" button below to take a look!
Mysterio Is Getting A Comic Accurate Costume
When it was revealed that Spider-Man: Far From Home's lead villain will be Mysterio, it took no time at all for fans to start salivating at the potential the character has. There was, however, some doubt about whether or not his costume would accurately be represented on screen but detailed set photos have confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal will indeed suit up in a version of the classic - and iconic - suit.
Something we haven't seen is the fishbowl helmet but common sense says that will probably end up being an energy field rather than a literal glass dome. Regardless, a closer look at Mysterio's cape pointed to his costume being powered by Chitauri tech which makes sense following Homecoming.
Romance For Peter Parker And Michelle?
Peter and "MJ" didn't seem particularly interested in each other in Homecoming but that looks set to change in the sequel because they've been spotted hanging out in a number of locales and the latest batch of set photos even showed Spidey pulling off some moves before taking her on a swing through the Big Apple. We've not seen them kissing but their friendship is clearly progressing in this film.
Spider-Man And Nick Fury's Boat Ride
In perhaps the most unusual photos we've seen from the set of Far From Home, Peter could be seen wearing a hoodie with his Spider-Man mask on underneath while taking a trip on a boat through Venice with Nick Fury. There are no tall building for the wall-crawler to swing from in the city or cars to travel by, so this mode of transport does make sense. What could bring them together, though?
Well, we'll get to that a little later but it's clear that the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director will be instrumental in this adventure and a team-up between these two definitely has a lot of potential on screen.
The Stark Suit Will Return
Something which has been apparent from day one is that we will see Spider-Man wearing the Stark suit in this sequel. Tom Holland has shared a number of behind the scenes videos where he's wearing that and it does make sense for this story to start with the "classic" costume. However, there's been no sign of the Iron Spider but seeing as that's created via CGI, we probably shouldn't be all that surprised.
A Red And Black Makeover
In what was definitely an unexpected surprise, photos from the New York set of Far From Home revealed that Peter will be getting a brand new Stark suit with a slightly larger logo on the front and a black colour scheme which replaces the classic blue. While it is something of a departure from the comics, the hero getting some sort of upgrade was inevitable and black really jumps off the screen.
Whether or not there's a story reason for this is hard to say but various pieces of concept art have revealed that both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have been trying to bring a red and black costume to the big screen for years now. How much screentime this will get remains a mystery for now, though.
The White Emblem
Our first glimpse at the aforementioned new suit came from behind and revealed a white logo on the back of the wall-crawler's updated costume. Immediately, fans started wondering if the same would be the case on the front, especially after the success of the hit video game. Well, it is just the one on the back as it happens but the black emblem on the front does have a very cool looking white outline.
The Wall-Crawler Is Heading Into Manhattan
I mentioned Spidey hanging out with Michelle in New York and another batch of photos - taken outside Grand Central Station - confirmed that the hero is finally heading into Manhattan during the sequel.
In Homecoming, he was a Friendly, Neighbourhood Spider-Man based in Queens but this definitely feels like a step in the right direction for the wall-crawler as he really should be fighting crime in more than just his home borough. It will also be fun seeing him swing from skyscraper to skyscraper.
Another Mysterious Villain
This may be something or absolutely nothing but one relatively blurry set photo which started doing the rounds while the production was in Prague showed what appeared to be another masked villain of some sort. Given their rather unique appearance, fans immediately started jumping to the conclusion that it's Chameleon, a character who is actually rumoured to play a role in Far From Home next year.
Hydro-Man (Maybe) Makes A Splash
This is pure speculation but there had been rumours for a while that Spider-Man might cross paths with Hydro-Man in Far From Home and Tom Holland added to that speculation with a very intriguing set video. In that, the hero was pretty much engulfed by a wave which many fans believe may belong to the villain and he would certainly be an interesting choice of a secondary villain just like Shocker.
A S.H.I.E.L.D. Issue Stealth Suit
When Spider-Man was first spotted on the set of Far From Home wearing a black costume, speculation immediately mounted about what it might mean. Well, we quickly learned that it's a stealth suit of some sort as the wall-crawler is clad all in black and in goggles paying homage to Spider-Man Noir.
However, a brightened version of one of the set photos seemingly confirmed that the wall-crawler's new suit has a S.H.I.E.L.D. logo on it which makes a lot of sense given the involvement of these two...
Nick Fury And Maria Hill's Meeting With Happy Hogan
Nick Fury and Maria Hill (who were last seen turning to dust at the end of Avengers: Infinity War) have been spotted on set a number of times and they're clearly the ones who give Peter that impressive new stealth suit. Regardless, in photos that may confirm how they track the hero down, we've seen these two meeting with Jon Favreau's Happy Hogan, an ally of sorts to the young Spider-Man.
Peter Parker At The Airport
There's not really much information to be gleaned from set photos showing Peter Parker running around the place but two lots have definitely piqued the curiosity of comic book fans. We've seen the youngster rushing through the airport and through what appeared to be the wreckage left behind by his battle with Mysterio in Prague. What's in such a hurry for? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Ned's New Girlfriend
We don't know what the future holds in store for Peter Parker in terms of romance but one thing we can safely say is that Ned Leeds is going to have a girlfriend! Just like his comic book counterpart, Spidey's best friend has a thing with Betty Brant in the sequel as they've been seen holding hands.
Not only is this a great nod to the source material but a sign that Betty will receive a much larger role in Far From Home after mostly being shown in news reports during the course of Homecoming last year.
J. B. Smoove Isn't J. Jonah Jameson
When J. B. Smoove was cast in Far From Home, there was a lot of talk about him quite possibly portraying a new version of J. Jonah Jameson. He's certainly well-suited to the role and would bring something new to the character but set photos sadly confirmed that he will not be The Daily Bugle's Publisher. Instead, it seems as if he's just going to be one of the teachers accompanying the students.
International Locations
Something which has become clear in recent months is that Far From Home will be a globe-trotting adventure which definitely takes Spider-Man out of his normal surroundings. London, Prague, Venice, and New York City are among the countries set to receive the spotlight here and it's possible there will be more that we either don't know about or the cast will be inserted into via visual effects/sets.
Remy Hill's Unknown Student
There have been a lot of rumours regarding Far From Home's plot with a lot of them claiming that Peter will find a new rival in the form of Alistair Smythe, a new student who attempts to turn his friends against him. He's obviously the son of Spencer Smythe, the man who created the original Spider-Slayer and Remy Hill certainly looks like he would make a good Alistair. We'll see, I guess!
Destruction In Venice
Spider-Man and Mysterio will go to war in Venice and photos from the set of the sequel showed that there's going to be quite a bit of aftermath. Rubble could be seen strewn around the street and that's a pretty strong indication that the villain will be able to do a little more than just create illusions if he can leave lasting damage like that. These images also showed that the front of his suit is comic accurate.
A Pensive Peter Parker
In one of the earliest videos from the set of Far From Home, we saw Peter Parker on a rooftop in London looking rather down in the dumps. No context was provided but fans immediately started wondering if the events of Avengers: Infinity War are weighing heavily on the hero's shoulders. After all, he travelled into outer space and ended up dying in the hands of his mentor, Tony Stark/Iron Man!
Possible Avengers 4 Spoilers
While it's previously been confirmed that Far From Home picks up shortly after the events of Avengers 4, some fans are convinced that this sequel will actually be set between Homecoming and Infinity War. Assuming that it really does take place at the start of Phase 4, then the fact Nick Fury and Maria Hill are out there working together may confirm that S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to make its return in the sequel.
That could line up with those rumours about Tony Stark being the new director of a reformed S.H.I.E.L.D. and surely Iron Man has to be alive to create that new red and black costume for Spidey.
