Its Official: MJ Will Not Feature In The Spider-Man Reboot

We thought Emma Stone might be MJ, then we heard there would be two female leads, then that MJ would only have a small part etc etc. Well it now looks like our favourite smokin hot red head will not feature in Marc Webb's movie..at all.

This thing has being going back and forth ever since the reboot was announced. It was assumed that Mary Jane would be a part of the story. But then news broke that director Marc Webb was actually on the look out for 2 female leads, surely MJ and Gwen Stacy? Then that was narrowed down to one, and Emma Stone looked likely to nab the role everyone assumed was that of MJ since, despite being naturally blond, Stone has donned the red locks in most of her other roles. Well as we know, Stone will be Gwen Stacy. And we now know courtesy of The Wrap, Miss Mary Jane Watson will not be appearing at all..

..an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap that Mary Jane Watson will not appear in the film after all, as the character is not currently featured in James Vanderbilt's screenplay, and apparently never was.

Even so, word is that the original idea was to have a love triangle between MJ, Stacy and Parker but this idea was dropped. There was also talk of Stone playing MJ(which is evidently where all of the 2 female leads talk sprang from), but when she won the part of Stacy instead they decided to stick with one lady to get Parker's Spidey sense a tingling. I'm sure many will see this as a good thing. There is no need to over complicate the plot with this first movie, and there is plenty of time to bring MJ in later on. Provided they don't reboot this franchise before a sequel comes out of course..

Besides we had enough of MJ during the Raimi Dynasty!! I say bang on leave MJ alone and casting is looking pretty darn good right now...

thats a really good move they should introduce her in the sequel but not put that much of a spot light on her like they did in spectacular spiderman and slowly build her and peters friendship up and then eventual relationship

As a fan and a reader of Spider-Man in the early seventies I feel the character of Gwen Stacy should get her spot light without MJ in the spot light with her. '70-'74 were great story years for the comic book and there are great opportunities for them to be made into movies. If they chose the Ultimate Series as I feel they are doing, this should be great too. I like the director for this movie too, it is to bad Marvel and Disney do not have control of Spider-Man.

I'm very cool with this. I hope it means that we're not going to get another chick flick like Raimi was doing.

KidZombie: I hope you're right. That was one of the big flaws with Raimi's films, substituting MJ for Gwen and doing the big fight with the Green Goblin in the first film.

This is not a bad move. I think it's wise to keep it simple and only have one love interest in this film.

If anything, I believe that MJ would be best to arrive in the sequel. This way, Gwen is already established, which would then make the love triangle more meaningful.

I could just picture Aunt May bugging Pete about Anna Watson's niece, and in the end of the film, he meets her, and we're treated with the famous line "Face it, Tiger. You just hit the jackpot."

It's been done before, of course. The '94 Spidey-toon and the Spectacular Spider-Man did it like that. But hey, I think it's a perfect set up for the next part of the saga.

Holy crap does this mean they might actually be trying to do the story correctly? And not introduce Mary Jane until later? I'll be incredibly impressed if I see Gwen flung from the Brooklyn Bridge at the end of this reboot.

Christina Hendricks is much too old for the Spidey reboot.

No MJ? Is this a nod to One More Day/Brand New Day?
Either way it's irrelevant. The reboot of the reboot will be upon us soon. Disney/Marvel are trying to get the rights back, already.

I'm good with this, BRING IN A VILLAINOUS LOVE INTEREST. Or no love interest, it's just a distraction. The female in a hero movie just get captured by the villain anyways. Sheesh. LOL

If they take the right path thi is going to be the best news ever...I mean gwen in the first movie, goblin as a villain in the second one and he kills gwen and the second movie ends with: "admit it tiger you've just hit the jackpot"

Maybe I'm wrong but continuity wise doesn't Spidey meet MJ well before Gwen in the comics? If so how does Gwen factor in and no MJ whatsoever? I'm ok with Gwen being the lead female, but MJ needs to be part of this universe IMO.

Does anyone other than myself remember Peter Parker's ORIGINAL love interest from the Lee/Ditko years?

Hell, Elizabeth Banks played her in three films so at least Betty Brant was acknowledged, albeit minimally.

Betty Brant should be the love interest, So balls to the lot of ya!

SmokinIndo - 11/5/2010, 10:53 AM
Balls!! MJ deserves some screentime in this. In the comics she was Peter Parker's best friend even though he was dating Gwen. The movie should at least introduce her as just that. I'd love to see MJ discovering Peter's identity and keeping it a secret until the third movie. (That's assuming they even get that far.) Omitting her completely isn't the answer. Sony's making the same mistake they made with the first trilogy.

cbluem - 11/5/2010, 11:05 AM
She should be in it. I agree that Gwen should be the love interest but they still need to find someone to play MJ. They need to show a connection there between them for after Gwen is killed at the end of SM1 by GG. MJ is there consoling him as the neighbor.

@villian001 -With you on the boycott. Needless reboot. Spidey 3 was, like, yesterday. This is Hollywood gone mad. One little mistake and they throw the whole franchise out. And I'm definately boycotting the reboot of the reboot.

80sFace - 11/5/2010, 11:54 AM
IMO...

Spider-Man 4: Pete will date Gwen by the middle of the film/end of Act II. And maybe intro MJ at the end of the film.
Spider-Man 5: Love triangle between Pete, Gwen and MJ. The Goblin will be the bad guy (or one of them). Gwen will die at the end of the film.
Spider-Man 6: Pete will fall for MJ.
