Casting for Marc Webb's 'Spider-Man' reboot has been underway for months, with two more names recently added to the shortlist. And one potential choice, who happens to be the youngest, Josh Hutcherson, 17, is said-to-be a favorite out of them all. Originally discussing Hutcherson's role in The Kids Are All Right, Kyle Buchanan from MovieLine manages to get few answers from him on making the "Peter Parker" Shortlist.

Are you still in the mix?
"Yeah. I mean, it’d be an amazing role, I think. I grew up loving the movies, so we’ll see. It’d be an amazing movie to be a part of. I think they went through a couple different breakdowns. They’re trying to figure out who exactly it is and what they want it to be and lock that down."

Does it freak you out at all?
"I mean it is, but it’s kind of exciting at the same time to see how much excitement there is already built up about it. I’m really excited for the restarting either way. People are like, “Did you read the comics growing up?” No, not really, but the first movie came out when I was nine years old! I grew up watching those movies."

What is that experience like? Is this what you’ve been waiting for?
"It’s just an honor. Ever since I first started acting, it hasn’t ever been a spur of the moment thing I wanted to do. It’s been my passion to do this forever. To be considered with these other actors who’ve been doing this for a while and to be in a movie with Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo, it’s just an honor, really. I’m so fortunate to be here and I hope to continue working with this pedigree of people and be on the same list as these other actors. I’m like, “Oh my God, they’re up for this role, too? That’s crazy! I’m never gonna get it.” It’s pretty exciting."

What do you think? Would you accept Hutcherson out of the other candidates which include Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, Andrew Garfield, and recently added, Aaron Johnson & Anton Yelchin.

Whoever director Marc Webb & the studio chooses as the new face of Spider-Man, the currently untitled reboot hits theaters July 3, 2012!

If they must reboot to high school, Hutcherson is fine with me. It will still be a rental for me though. :-P

Great article DCMF but I really hope and pray that this guy doesnt get it. I've come to terms with the fact we're stuck with a younger version of Peter Parker in 2012 but there are a lot of better choices out there than Hutcherson IMO.

Anyone read the first part of "Grim Hunt" in Amazing this week? Pretty awesome right?

Haven't gotten that far yet Josh. Just got finished the Lee Weeks/Juggernaut story. (Haven't been down to get comics in a couple of months.

Looking forward to Grim Hunt though.

Hey Josh, do you have a fansite where you discuss the Amazing SM comic?

@Josh Thanks man! Even though hes the right age, I don't think they should go with an actor of that actual age. Maybe someone that can give off that older appeal, but can be convinced as a high school student. This guy looks entirely too young. You know who should be Peter Parker?

CODY MCMAINS

Remember him from Not Another Teen Movie, co-starring Chris Evans AKA Captain America. This guy is hilarious, and I think he could make a convincing talkative High School Peter Parker.

Eviltwin: Oh, you're gonna love it man! I dont want to say anything for risk of spoilers but prepare to be AMAZED! :) CBM doesnt post all that much comic book news unless it's a big story but you might be interested in reading my interview with ASM writer Fred Van Lente I did a little while back:

PART ONE
PART TWO

Destroyer14: Looking forward to it!

DCMF: Hey, that's a pretty good choice actually! I cant say I'm too familiar with his work but he's got the right look and demeanor that I would associate with a younger Spider-Man! A slightly older actor who can pull off a high school kid is exactly what we need though which is why my top choice would probably have to be Jamie Bell. Although, the slightly younger Logan Lerman and Aaron Johnson would also be two excellent picks IMO!

tea: LMAO!!! :D

@JoshW I just want an American. To me, casting an American for Peter Parker, is like casting Captain America. And I found a little more on Cody. His dream role is to be a superhero....whos isn't right? lol. Click pic.

Eviltwin

Got part one to work, but part two won't come up.

Good interview Josh! Van Lente is probably one of the better writer on ASM right now. I was reading a review on IGN Comics of Grim Hunt and they were loving how it's taking a darker turn. Which I'm happy for 'cause I think it's sometimes been a little too light for me.

I've always though Spidey was at his best reads when there was real serious sh1t going on. I was really loving Civil War tie in/Back in Black issues. I was so hoping for May to actually die this time (just because they have toyed with it soooo many times over the years), and let his life play out from the events of all that. But nooooooo, they had to screw with it. That said, I am enjoying a lot of post BND.

Looking forward to O.M.I.T. I'm thinking Spidey went to Loki for his favour and cast a spell to make everybody forget who he is, and MJ asked Mephisto to remember everything.

Guys.....STFU!

Josh, believe it or not is a great actor, MUCH more so then Logan learman, thats right, i said MUCH MORE. The kids, grown, he's the most REASONABLE age wise for the role being that he isnt even 20 yet.

@wolversinesfury I actualy couldsee Ashely As more of a felicia hardy, BUT as MJ i could also see her.

austen
austen - 6/18/2010, 4:40 PM
c'mon he's never read the comic books but saw the movies when he was 9 and loves them---we're screwed, we really are if this guy gets cast. And for those who are not familiar with this actor, he's like 5'5 and isn't growing any taller, has a blockhead and just doesn't give off a peter parker vibe.

LOGAN LERMAN OR YELCHIN FOR SPIDEY
austen
austen - 6/18/2010, 4:42 PM
he like what came 4th or 3rd to last on the CBM spidey poll - which means he has a good chance of getting the part because the studio never really listens to fan choices
JoshWilding

<> Interesting info - I could come around to the idea of him playing Spider-Man! I understand you wanting an American to play Peter but Aaron Johnson's flawless accent in Kick-Ass proves to me he's more than capable! Still, Logan Lerman has always been my top choice and that's who I'm sticking with for now..! By the way, if you're looking for a great Spidey graphic novel to pick up, give this one a go:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Peter Parker gets back into the swing of his life and embarks on a new career, but a sudden encounter with an enigmatic stranger forever changes the way he looks at himself. Reprints Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #30 - #35.

You dont need any knowledge of his history to understand it and it's one of the best Spider-Man stories ever told that gives a really interesting and refreshing take on the character. You should be able to find it dirt cheap on Amazon/eBay as it's a few years old too!

EvilTwin: Thanks! :) Part Two should work for you now if you try again!

I know what you mean - I love the more serious Spider-Man stories! "Back in Black" was great, especially after JMS' work started going downhill with the Gwen Stacy storline and "The Other", and it would have been interesting to actually kill May. They handled the identity reveal very badly though IMO so I was glad to see it go because it never reached the potential I thought it could of. "Brand New Day" may not have been introduced that well but bringing back Harry and the direction the title has taken since has been brilliant for the most part.

I just wish they had never made Aunt May, Black Cat and Norman Osborn forget Spider-Man's identity as they're three of his most important relationships. Saying that, I'm hoping OMIT will explain all of that as well as how people remember him as soon as he takes the mask off and why MJ still remembers etc. I dont want this to be like the finale of Lost, lol! Marvel need to answer ALL of these questions and more! My guess is you're right about Loki as well.

TheSoulEater: I dunno...I just dont like the look of him to be honest! There's no way I can picture him as Peter Parker!

ANIL: Find me when you've read it...we have much to dicuss, lol!

@ Josh
Part 2 works now, thanks!

For me, I didn't think JMS's writing went downhill during those stories. For me, I think it was with The Other that I got back into collecting Spider-Man comics for the first time since I stopped in the 90's. Deodato's art was the best I'd seen on SM for years and I thought the writing was really interesting. From that point I went back and bought all the trades of JMS Spidey and caught up. After so much garbage IMO after the McFarlane years, to find out that Peter had joined the Avengers and Steve Rogers was training him in combat, I was impressed! It was good to see him start having good fortune for a change.

Did I like the Gwen/Osbourne story? Yes and no. It was like a punch in the gut the same way I'm sure the character of Peter was supposed to have felt. But to me it was interesting.

The Other. I though JMS was NEVER recreating his origin, but putting out there a thought provocing 'Peter never thought of it like this before. Could have been a possibility.' The whole totem stuff.

I agree that May should still know who he is, I thought it was about time when she did find out in JMS run. Finally the book had found some maturity I thought it so should have had a long time ago. The one thing I though was handled bad was the JJJ/PP showdown when JJ found out who Spidey was. It could have been more drawn out, like a one on one talk. There have been times when JJ has been like a father figure when he's able to be a nice guy, lol.

While Aaron Johnson was great in Kick Ass, I don't know if he'd realistically accept being Peter Parker so soon after he played Dave Lizewski. Just seems too similar, too soon.

@JoshW I agree. I never liked Brand New Day. Back in Black is probably the best Spider-Man storyline ever.
Eviltwin
Eviltwin - 6/18/2010, 6:20 PM
@Anil
100% agree with you in your 1st paragraph! My thoughts exactly.

If you go back in JMS's run there was a story where Loki came to SM for help with his daughter (?). Anyway, by the end of it, Loki said to Spidey if he ever needed anything.................(something close to that anyway I think). So Loki could possibly how nobody remembers. Just a theory. (Quote "but spidey going to Loki?" Remember, he did go to some bad guys when trying to find ways to save aunt may from her death bed.)

I thought I read Quesada had stated that it was NOT Mephisto who did the mind wipe. I think it was during the FF story where Johnny was getting mad about not knowing his identity, or during the one with Osbourne (Character Assasination or New Ways To Die) that Peter says "Good to see what we did with my identity still works." (paraphrasing here). To me "we" sounds like he might have went to somebody. I hope we'll find out.

Good call on what MJ might have whispered Anil, but, I think she has had them all along. I was re-reading some AMS recently, on the phone MJ suggests to Peter some women he could date (again, something like that) and one of them she suggests Black Cat! In the Paper Doll story, MJ shows that she know his identity there too.

Oh no! I haven't read Grim Hunt yet Anil, lol. Earmuffs earmuffs.

Sorry if this stuff may be inacurrate, I'm try to type and think of the things off the top of my head. Lol.

JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 6/18/2010, 6:27 PM
Eviltwin/ANIL: I enjoyed JMS and Deadato's storis but they just didnt match the quality of his work with Romita IMO. His share of "The Other" was decent but Peter David and Reginald Hudlin [frick]ed that storyline right up - Aunt May fighting Doombots? Check. No explanation to what was killing Peter? Check. No explanation to how Morlun returned. Check. I really didnt like that arc! Great idea, poor execution!

The Gwen/Osborn story was actually alright as well. It's just a pity they let some nobody writer bring them both back over in Spectacular Spider-Man for some awful story set in Paris. Not JMS' fault of course. Stuff like the Peter/JJJ relationship during Civil War is exactly what I'm talking about when I refer to the reveal being badly handled!

Marvel [frick]ed up when it came to Spider-Man's involvement with Dark Reign/Siege. He should have had a much bigger role in the whole thing and a "The List" was just a waste as it had no lasting effect. Interesting OMD ideas...there are so many theories, I cant begin to speculate but I just want answers whatever they might be! And yeah, I cant wait until the return of Doc Ock in September!

RE: ASM-Ya, highs and lows for sure. I'm getting a little tired of some of the not so good artwork lately. This is Marvels flagship book, it need to step it up a notch IMO. I'd love to see Deodato come back. But really, I'd love to see the quality of Brubaker/Epting run on Captain America brought to Amazing Spider-Man
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 6/18/2010, 6:31 PM
Eviltwin: Thanks, I'll go check it out now! :) Pete definitely said "we" so I'm thinking he did the identity wipe with somone other than Mephisto as well. I'm sure the early BND titles said Spider-Man had been missing for a month so there might be a bigger story here than we realise...

Art has definitely been hit-and-miss during The Gauntlet. Michael Lark's work in "Grim Hunt" is brilliant though!

So right on the other segments of The Other storyline.

100% right on the Spectacular one too.

And, yes, Spidey should have had a bigger role in Dark Reign/Seige. Marvel screwed the pooch on that one.

I'm sure I did read something about that month lapse at the start of BND would be in OMIT

I had actually planned on making an editorial as to why Josh could make a good Peter Parker/Spider-Man, but then word came around that Jamie might have gotten the part so I decided to trash it. He might not be the best in what we might have hoped for, but I'd be okay if Josh got the role.

@TheSoulEater
He is a good actor. 'Bridge to Terabithia' shows that he can handle the emotional core of who Peter is as a person and still manage to balance the lighter side of him which is Spider-Man.
