Deadline reports that Ariana DeBose is set to play Calypso in Sony Pictures' Kraven the Hunter movie. She'll star alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the title role, and this marks yet another impressive addition to the project. Recently, the J.C. Chandor helmed film added Russell Crowe (potentially as Kraven's father) and Fred Hechinger as the villainous Chameleon.
In the comic books, Calypso is a love interest to Kraven and utilises voodoo powers and magic potions. She once took control of The Lizard in one of Spider-Man's most harrowing battles: "Torment."
DeBose has earned an Oscar nomination for her work in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story and actually picked up a prestigious SAG award for "Best Supporting Actress" this past weekend. Next up for her is Matthew Vaughn's Argylle opposite Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson and Dua Lipa.
After the success of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony continues to expand its Marvel Universe, and Kraven the Hunter joins a slate that also includes Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson and Olivia Wilde's Spider-Woman project.
Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk wrote the screenplay for Kraven the Hunter, and the fact that the movie is attracting such top tier talent is definitely a good sign.
Kraven the Hunter will be released in theaters on January 13, 2023.
