A logo for Madame Web found its way online earlier today, and we now have a brief description of the first teaser trailer.
This is expected to be released imminently (almost certainly before Friday), and it seems we can expect to see some madcap moments in a movie that's heading our way from the writers of Morbius. That didn't receive an overly positive response last year, but it was put through the wringer in the editing room so we may never know what it once looked like.
Back to Madame Web, and while it sounds undeniably unique, we'll leave it up to you to decide whether that's a good or bad thing!
"Main characters face off against a Spider-Man-like villain, Ezekiel Main characters face off against a Spider-Man-like villain, Ezekiel Simms, in a diner brawl. After a defeat, Madame Web time-travels to redo the fight," reads a breakdown leaked by @Cryptic4KQual. "She teams up with Julia Carpenter and others who share a common threat from Ezekiel."
"He implies the three girls must die because of what they become in the future. Action-packed sequences follow, including an ambulance chase and explosions. We get to see brief glimpses of their costumes."
It’s no secret Madame Web will feature a host of female Spider-Heroes, and we now know they’re brought together by the title character to battle Ezekiel. He was an ally to Peter Parker in the comics before revealing he'd acquired his powers through mystical means and had to sacrifice Spider-Man to a Spider God to save himself.
It’s previously been reported that Madame Web will see Ezekiel target a pregnant Mary Parker, though we can't help but wonder if the idea was scrapped when Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios came to a new agreement to share Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. If so, the movie could have served as a bizarre, very early, origin story for the web-slinger...it still might, of course, even if it isn't ultimately for the Earth-616 Variant!
The mention of time travel and costumes is bound to raise some eyebrows, and many fans will be pleased that these Spider-Heroes are going to suit up rather than spending the whole movie decked out in their regular clothes.
Madame Web features a cast that's led by Dakota Johnson as the title character, with Adam Scott, Emma Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Zosia Mamet set to join her.
S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing Madame Web from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. As of now, the movie is expected to swing into theaters on February 16, 2024.
