MADAME WEB Won't Be An Action Movie Says Producer; Describes It As "More Of A Thriller"

Madame Web producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has shared another update about the Sony Pictures movie, explaining why the title character's powers don't necessarily lend themselves to an action blockbuster...

Morbius' writers somehow talked themselves into being given another job by Sony Pictures, hence why Madame Web is coming our way next year.

The movie is expected to introduce a whole roster of female Spider-Heroes, along with a pregnant Mary Parker who is targeted by Ezekiel Sims. It appears the studio is planning to explain why the Venomverse has no Spider-Man, with set photos confirming the action takes place in the early 2000s.

Well, maybe not action

Talking to Collider about Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Madame Web producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explained, "It’s a different kind of movie in that universe. It’s almost, in a way, more of a thriller." He'd add that, "it’s not an action piece, because, in a way, [Madame Web’s] skill set is not conducive to an action piece."

Adding that the character's "clairvoyance is a tricky skill set," di Bonaventura went on to say that Sony is looking to keep as many of the movie's secrets under wraps as possible.

Recently, the producer also confirmed Madame Web will explore who the title character was before we meet her in the comics, a similar approach to, you guessed it, Morbius. The movie definitely has potential, but Sony has yet to deliver a truly great live-action Spider-Verse project not made in partnership with Marvel Studios.

Other titles on the way include Kraven the Hunter, Venom 3, and a Spider-Woman movie, though there's been no solid news about the latter for some time now. On the small screen, we're waiting on TV shows about Spider-Man Noir and Silk.

Madame Web features a cast that's led by Dakota Johnson as the title character, with Adam Scott, Emma Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Zosia Mamet set to join her.

S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing Madame Web from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. As of now, the movie is expected to swing into theaters on February 16, 2024.

Madame Web is usually depicted as Causasian.
And also very old. Like a grandmother.

Miles Morales is Half African American and half Latino.
He is not all black like popular culture likes to believe.
He is Half African American and Half Latino.

@bobevanz - Don't know what a "PFP' is
And also don't really care.

Sorry.

@TempleRod - Every popular adaption I've seen him in adapts Miles as half black half latino. Into The SpiderVerse and PS4 Spider-Man.

What does saying she's depicted as white have to do with this article? The actress playing her seems to be white, as far as I can tell. The old thing I don't think is much of an issue.

@bobevanz - without sounding rude, just think about what Superman represents (visually) 😂

@bobevanz - @TempleRod is chooses depictions of Superman to play out a power fantasy more akin to Homelander than the immigrant last son of Krypton. I'm almost entirely certain that this is yet another alt account for Counterpoint/Intothepot/etc. If it is somehow not an alt account, the worse alternative is that multiple xenophobic and close-minded people will desecrate Superman to advance their narrow minded dreams and desires.

I was fine with entertaining alternative viewpoints, but I'm certainly through with that. I lost my patience when they insinuated that my mixed-race heritage makes me a lesser person without a culture or community.
I miss the days when I could read people's excitement for comic book movies on this site, or otherwise laugh at some funny gifs. Instead, I come to the comments section to find anti-Semitic rants, tirades that whine and rail against race/gender/sexuality, and paper thin fragility that feeds its meager ego with claims of "erasure." I've read comics my whole life and watched them be stories about progress--it's a shame that such a vocal part of the fanbase would rather regress.

I know that the typical policy on this site is to use the "Block" button, but then I would be unable to see when people like this make such cruel and ill-intentioned statements. Since @NateBest has apparently no control to stop this from happening, it's up to the rest of the users on the site to police and report the next offensive statement that defies the ethos of the heroes we've read about in comic books. The constant monitoring is a vicious cycle and one that is goading me to leave the site altogether. It's been fun for nearly 20 years of visits to the site, but I don't think I can't put up with much more of this.

@TheRose - I'm pretty confused what's going on here. The post seemed to just be randomly saying the character is white and pointing out that Miles Morales is black and latino. Am I missing something?
dagenspear
dagenspear - 6/9/2023, 10:27 AM
@TheRose - I haven't seen anything against any race in that post.

Also progress or regress, it doesn't mean much. Just people's perception of things change. Morality is always the same, there's no change. As defined by God and His Holy Word The Holy Bible, which, as far as I know, says to, "Honor all people."
TheRose
TheRose - 6/9/2023, 10:47 AM
@dagenspear - There isn't anything in this post explicitly "against" race, but TempleRod has made it clear that these "fact" posts are not in good faith.
From the Ultimate Comics Relaunch thread:
---------
"@PlusUltra - Maybe due to reality.

And I notice a lot of people here have some kind of bias towards not accepting reality.
The reality is that Pop Culture is all based on race war and race identity.
So if that is going to be the case, might as well call it out.

Every time a character is mentioned. I am just going to make sure everyone knows what race and gender they are. Just like the mainstream does. We'll see how soon you guys get sick of it."
--------
TempleRod makes it clear that their intention behind these posts is to illicit a reponse from those who have differing opinions on how the "Race War and Race Identity" play out with comic book properties. It is not to simply state a fact, but rather to impose one interpretation of "reality" as a concrete truth that cannot be bent or changed. They are posturing this "reality" as if changing it would be wrong. This narrow view fails to recognize that "fact" is a loose concept when dealing with works of fiction. These characters can and will be changed from story to story. If that alters their race, gender, or identity in other ways, then it could illuminate a new aspect. The cynic in me reminds me that these could also be soulless cash grabs, which we know for certain is happening, but that doesn't take away from the opportunities presented by making our fictions flexible.
TheRose
TheRose - 6/9/2023, 10:53 AM
@dagenspear - Morality does change as we evolve in society. Right and wrong are more well defined as we get a better understanding of science, social structures, the dynamics of interpersonal relationships, etc.

For instance, if we look at the Holy Bible you cited here, there is the Old Law and the New Law. Would you say that Old testament and New Testament are entirely congruent with one another. Under the old law of morality, the Jewish people were those "chosen by god" without any real direction to heaven for those outside of the children of Abraham. Under the New testament, that morality is changed to provide a path of salvation through Jesus Christ. I'm no longer a practicing Christian, but even within that faith, it's plain to see that things change.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 6/9/2023, 11:40 AM
@TheRose - Not seeing anything in the post is what I'm saying. If anything, I read it as an argument against those who don't go with the character of Miles' racial identity.

Morality never changes. Just how people perceive it.

@TheRose - Yes, the community is a big part of the policing, especially with the repeat offenders.

Many people mistakenly believe that something as simple as an IP block will keep users from coming back, but the unfortunate fact is that there is no sure fire way to keep people from registering for new accounts.

I have several things in place for users that I perma-ban, including IP blocks, but there are ways around the blocks.
TheRose
TheRose - 6/9/2023, 1:52 PM
@NateBest - That's understandable. I didn't mean to diminish the efforts that you've put in place. I think my tone came off pretty harsh there.

I know that you have put in measures to address these concerns, and I don't think it's your fault that they haven't entirely worked. It's simply the case that people who get banned have been able to easily return. Community policing is our most effective way to root out offenders. What it comes down to is that I am growing weary of the fact that almost every thread could be policed for one reason or another. Like I said before, I've been coming to this page for nearly 20 years---I can remember I was in Middle School reading articles about Batman Begins and the Raimi Spider-Man movies! I'm not sure what we did to facilitate such a volatile community when things used to be so chill.

@TheRose - are you a fan of madame web?...i don't think i ever saw her when i was reading comics in the late 70's early 80's...but i am kind of excited about a "super-hero" movie that is more a thriller...as much as i love the big action/powers/realms stuff...i do miss the more street level...i liked moon knight and winter soldier for the intrigue, and the smaller scale stuff...i think i get where you are coming from...i would much rather see conversation about the stories, actors, old school comic pages being shared, etc than the constant negativity
NateBest
NateBest - 6/9/2023, 7:21 PM
@TheRose - Oh no, not at all. I wanted to share that as many people mistakenly believe that an IP ban will magically stop people from registering new accounts... I wish it were that easy. Back in the old days it was fairly effective, but in today's age of easily accessible VPNs and technology, its long sice past 😵

Negativity seems to be the overall trend of the web over the last 10 years and has accelerated in particular the last few... It makes me long for the old days when the worst that happened were flamewars between Marvel and DC 🤣

The community and comments are the one thing that makes CBM special, but I can see why most sites have turned off the ability to comment all together. The problem is that it punishes the good and responsible users more so than the bad.

The more and more news I read about this movie, the more and more interested I am in the movie. I'll admit that "Madame Web" wasn't the first property I would have turned into a Superhero-Thriller, but that doesn't make it any less intriguing. This cast is star-studded, talented and unabashedly sexy. They all seem to be behind this project and I want to see what they were able to put together.
