Marc Webb Talks About The Use Of Web-Shooters In The Amazing Spider-Man!

The director of next year's Spider-Man reboot talks in detail about why the web-shooters will be used in the film, as well as dishing on the design of the costume and the extended legs on the spider symbol...

Speaking to LA Times, Marc Webb - director of the hotly anticipated The Amazing Spider-Man - talks about why he decided to include the use of the web-shooters in the film (something that Raimi's trilogy didn't), saying that they helped to dramatize Peter Parker's intellect. He also discussed the design of the costume, saying that they wanted to make the body longer and more agile (something that the extended legs of the chest symbol emphasizes).

On why they decided to go with web-shooters...
I had a meeting with Stan Lee and we talked about the web-shooters. I was curious about the incarnation of them [because] of course in the previous films [they went away from them] and we wanted to reestablish ourselves. That was one thing but the other thing was the fact that the web-shooters were able to dramatize Peter’s intellect and I thought that was really cool. … It was in the comics and we have a different design but it’s a cool element to have. It’s not something we over-use or over-exploit. To me, it’s something I remember from when I was a kid and thinking 'It would be cool if I could build those.'

On the design of the costume...
We paid attention to the question of ‘How would a kid make it?’ And obviously we took some license with it. We also wanted a design that would make the body longer and more lithe, more of an acrobat, someone incredibly agile, and the legs of the spider [symbol on the chest] were something we used to emphasize that. We made a bunch of different suits for different lighting conditions. I wanted something that worked in the night a little better. We paid attention to that and also made the webbing [on the costume] a little bit darker. With the costume and the web-shooters we wanted to emphasize that these are things that Peter Parker made and that he is special himself even if he feels like he’s an outsider.

I'm all for the shooters.. Are we certain yet that the're 100% mechanical, or a mixture of both?? Threw me off seeing the "web" coming out of his neck in the trailer..

@blvdnoise i think the spider burrowed into his neck and that is where the web came from.

Both the Spiderman costumes in these films look like NOTHING any teenage boy could put together in his wildest dreams. The Raimi suit got it right, this suit just looks like a variant in dodgy rubber. Web shooters may be true tot he 616 universe comic but makes this kid a genius overnight to make not only web fluid but a gadget to disperse it with and then create nothing else for the rest of his days quite as genius. Kid should be the next Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or Dyson for crissake!

Totaly agree about the costume Raimi's version is better and as for the web shooters, yes I know they are meant to show how intelligent Peter is but correct me if I'm wrong is he not meant to have inherited the abillietys of a spider and is that not be able to spin your own webs again Raimi got wright, come on this is 2011

PRMR77- The only way organic shooters would make sense if he had the spinneret somewhere on his rear. I don't know of a spider that shoots web out it's arms. Do you?

@ceejay i agree that these look nothing like something a teenager could make on a high school budget as a whole, but the blue parts of the costume are similar to gloves fishermen where when the scale fish. Its sort of a tough nylon type fabric with raised something(silicone maybe?) that has the same texture and exterior look to small adhesive circles on some under armour apparel so that could be the idea in the blue parts

the red? i have no idea what thats made of because the pictures dont give a good idea, people say basketballs but it would have to be a unique basketball to match the textured look of the material

Duh.

I think the film should have stayed away from the webshooters and stuck to Peter having organic webbing. I don't know if anyone remembers reading kick-ass and Dave Lizewsk commented on how silly and unbelievable it would be in Sam Raimi's spiderman, if peter created the web-shooters.

this is the dumbest shit iv ever heard

he questions how does he make a suit but not how hes able to afford money to make web shooter?

the sadest part is you sheep like this ugly ass suit that looks better at night (not good for a superhero suit) still like it and love that he has ol skool drama ploy aka web shooters .

yes organic webbing doesnt make sense unless whoever engeneered the spider to do that to a human body.
that makes more sense to me then a poor kid makin mechanical web shooters.

Ceejay- "Web shooters may be true tot he 616 universe comic but makes this kid a genius overnight to make not only web fluid but a gadget to disperse it with and then create nothing else for the rest of his days quite as genius."

Errrm. How much spidey do you know like, at all???

Specialized web fluid, modified during different situations.

Web shooters.

Spider-Tracer devices that allows him to track anyone tagged with one through honing in his Spider-Sense.

Specialized belt to hold extra cartridges of web fluid, spider tracers, an automatic motion-sensor camera, and his spider-signal search-and-startle light.

Special lenses that protect from glare, extreme light, dust, etc., hide his eyes while giving him clear vision. In an age where many heroes just had masks with entirely visible and utterly recognizable eyes.

While in an ESU laboratory, Peter invented a white & blue suit that was made of steel plates that were from a pseudo-metallic composition using a modified webbing formula.

Peter creates a stealth suit. He is able to do this through his new job at Horizon Labs. The Stealth Suit warps light and sound to become invisible and totally silent, it is also impervious to sonic attacks. He also created special lenses so that he can be seen by people if needs be.

To fight the deranged villain known as Massacre, Peter built himself a dark colored bulletproof armored costume that deflects bullets, and equipped himself with MAGNETIC WEBBING that can be used to disable the radio frequencies of Massacre's charges.

I respect Raimi's trilogy, mainly for what it did for CBMs but the Spider-Man movies do NOT hold up well anymore IMO. The special effects are starting to show age and the lines are cheesy to down-right lame at times.

"Are you in, or are you out?"
"Its you who's out Gobby, out of your mind!"

I can't wait to see a GOOD wise-cracking Spidey. I never bought into Tobey as Peter Parker or Spider-Man, he was okay as both but great at neither.
I think Andrew is going to deliver big time for the fans.

after reading all of the comments on this page, I know for a fact that only 5 of you have ever actually read a Spiderman comic and the rest got their info from Raimi's inaccurate boring ass trilogy of crap.

Tarantulas, wolf spiders, trap door spiders, and several others can not make webbing.

Part of Pete's ability is knowing what chemicals can make the webbing formula (which has a very limited shelf life as it dissolves within a matter of hours). The specialized web shooters only fire when he applies a certain amount of pressure only using the two fingers (so it doesnt accidentally fire when he makes a fist). The only abilitis he got from the spider bite are enhanced strength, agility and reflexes, static cling, and an acute sense that danger is near (which all insects have).

One of the things I always liked about the comics was that Peter had to deal with the amount of web fluid he could carry and sometimes got in trouble when he exausted his supply. It adds another level of problem solving and management of power to the character. Organic webshooters never addressed how much could be produced from his body or even how. I like the idea that he will have to manage this.

I like the web shooters, but I really dug how Raimi re-imagine that and make it a part of Peters biological make-up due to the bite. To me, that made a lot sense.

I am looking forward to this movie. I see why
Raimi used the organize webs because that's
What he had in the comics, but I like the
web shooters for this movie. It really shows
how smart Peter is and how vulnerable
Spidey can be. Great choice Webb!

Being one who is looking forward to this movie as well, and one who likes the mechanical web shooters as well as I do the organic ones, I feel there is a place for both, that way Spidey wouldn't have those opp's moments when he ran out of webbing, just a thought to consider

Spider-Man 2 was good but it wasn't accurate. I think the same with The Dark Knight.

This has so far been my favorite characterization of Doc Ock

When he wakes with the arms attached he suffers from memory loss, claims himself a new person and has no real control over the arms. Nevertheless he realizes they are connected to his subconscious when he starts humming (I think it was fur ellis or something-need to go back and look) to calm himself down. When he finally decides to take his first agressive action he changes his tune to flight of the valkyries.
