Micro-News: Joss Whedon On The Importance Of His None Marvel Projects, Mary Jane Gets A Dad And More

Joss Whedon on the importance of his small, indie projects, Mary Jane's father is cast in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and actor Jerome Flynn (Bronn) talks about what's coming up in Game of Thrones.

Joss Whedon talks about the need to have smaller projects in the works alongside his Marvel stuff with The Scotland Herald.
"It started with the [writers'] strike and the realization that not only can we do these things ourselves, but that we have to. I'm very happy at Marvel and I'm having the time of my life working on Avengers 2, but at the same time you need this other outlet. And everybody has it. Nobody can't do what we did. It's absurd what technology has given us just in the last decade and not to take advantage of that feels like a waste of time."

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson talked with Collider about his new movie Snitch which opens this week but also briefly discussed G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Hercules.
"G.I. Joe. Saw it three weeks ago. Badass. Hercules, passion project coming up, shooting in Croatia, can't wait."

IMDB says journeyman actor Brian Haley is playing Phillip Watson, the father of Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It's IMDB though so take this with a grain of salt.

Jerome Flynn who plays the scene-stealing Bronn on HBO's Game of Thrones discusses the upcoming third season with Access Hollywood.
"He's a badass character but he's a small character. The writers, Dan and David, they've been great because they've given me bits even though there's not much in the books, they keep Bron ticking along. He's just about sticking it with Tyrion, he's a bit frustrated, under paid, but there's still love between them. And we have some nice scenes together but not much. I think I'm going along next season for a bit more."

Director Jeff Wadlow says a trailer for Kick-Ass 2 is coming soon.

In the latest issue of SciFi Now, Mark Millar discusses what Joe Carnahan had planned for Daredevil.
"He had an act in mind and said, 'We can't set it in the present day....Hell's Kitchen is a beautiful neighborhood.' Rudy Giuliani has cleaned everything up. It's nice for the people that live there, but it's not very good cinematically. So he said it had to be a period piece, and the perfect time to set it would be in the Seventies, as you have all the kung-fu exploitation, the race-riots, the blackout- all that kind of stuff would be so cool in a superhero movie. The blackout with a guy that's blind would be incredible."

Daredevil back with Marvel, set in the 70's, Whedon working on Avengers 2, Kick Ass 2 trailer

DAMN!
It would actually be cool if all the Marvel Knights got a 70's setting Daredevil, Elektra, Punisher, Moon Knight, Iron Fist and Luke Cage

When Marvel does the DD reboot more, they should look to Frank Miller and Bendis run on DD for inspiration(haven't read Brubaker's run yet but I heard it was great).

I think Marvel should do DD in a show. Could be their Arrow. On the time peice not really sure what to do with that...

I like this post very much. Every single one of these didn't need its own story, but put them together in one place and it's a solid bit of info.

I want Frank Castle back on the big screen. Yes, I know his movies didn't do well(I really like the Thomas Jane version though) but I believe they can make a great Punisher movie.

Daredevil does sound like it would have been awesome, I have to admit...

I've been waiting for the Kick Ass 2 trailer for ages. Also, Carnahan's Daredevil sounded awesome. I would much preferred to have seen that and have the Fantastic Four back at Marvel with all their villains and the Silver Surfer. Josh Trank better not [frick] that movie up. Or Fox better not push their idea for a shared universe with the X Men too far so it ruins all their upcoming films.

Awesome information! I truly hope they Reboot Daredevil in the best possible way. Maybe obscure the day and age, like Sin City does or how Batman used to. It's old but new...I don't know, make it work!

PS..I like this format also! Multiple news snippets are more filling than an entire article built around one quote.

I know The Spirit was kind of all over the place, but I think that style would have really worked really well for Horn Head. Go on Marvel, grow some balls and let Frank Miller direct it. Give it a harder rating, it doesn't necessarily have to exist in the same universe, either.

Marvel should do DD and The Punisher with harder ratings, and put them under the Marvel Knights banner so as to keep them slightly separated from their other movies.

What would it take to make a great Punisher movie?? It seems like it would be pretty damn simple! It's a violent tale of Revenge. I liked the Thomas Jane one, but they made the mistake of putting John Travolta in it and making it kinda goofy and rushed. I'd love if it were done like that South Korean film 'I Saw The Devil'...why has it never worked?

Joe Carnahan is not a hack! >:(

And his idea would've been awesome. WTF, Marvel? WTF?!?

I would have loved to see Carnahan's Daredevil. I've seen the sizzle-reel and that's definitely the vibe I got from it. It was dark, gritty, definitely R-rated, like the director's cut of the Mark Steven Johnson film, and Marvel would miss out on a great opportunity if they let Carnahan slip through their fingers.

For those of you not fortunate enough to have seen it, here's an embed:

Hire Carnahan to do a DD show set in the MCU.

Uhh.., hire Quentin to make that trailer a reality. Hire Carnahan to direct through another branch of Disney/Marvel that exists in the MCU.., just not the timeframe. I could see a late '70's early '80's vigilante disappearring by the time of Stark circa' '08.
Logan5
Logan5 - 2/21/2013, 10:34 AM
Not to be a Carnahan suck up.., but if I had to work with the guy they cast as BA on that schedule? A-Team, Yay-Team and we're out. :-P

Smoking Aces had it's moments and he's a good director.., he just hasn't struck a chord with me, yet. Narc was pretty good. That being said, I'm not going to tell this guy to sh!t off, 'cause I haven't loved one of his films yet.., he has appeal.

BlackFlash - 2/21/2013, 11:05 AM
@IronDean2099 - Marvel is with Disney so don't expect to see DD, Punisher or Blade with a harder rating.
IronDean2099
IronDean2099 - 2/21/2013, 11:33 AM
@ BlackFlash They still do violence in the comics. Disney do not dictate what Marvel does, just help fund the stuff and reaps the benefits.

@Marvel87 or Alex or..

Punisher needs to happen and the fact that they've failed in 3 attempts at what is basically a Chuck Norris character with an arsenal and quality back story is baffling. This should say more than what I'm about to about adaptations, too many cooks, etc., so....................................., on and on,......................., get it yet(?), and.............................................., sorry Connery's scenes from Highlander are on at the moment,.............................., okay: Why?

I really hope a Marvel Knights movie could get made, Marvel has The Punisher, Daredevil, Black Widow and I'm sure they have the rest.

They're making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Marvel Knights wouldn't be as far of a stretch :)

ShadowOfTheWeb - 2/21/2013, 6:27 PM
IMO Carnahan would have really nailed the gritty Frank Miller DD vibe. setting it in the 70's would've made sense and you could see Luke Cage and Iron Fist fitting in there nicely. That being said I really hope Marvel use these characters and I'd be just as keen to see how they fit them into the Marvel Cinematic U. Have to keep DD and the street level heroes true to their roots!
