MORBIUS: Jared Leto-Led Spider-Man Spinoff Adds DOCTOR WHO Star Matt Smith In A Major Role
It looks like Sony has begun casting Jared Leto's upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius and they've just added a major piece in Primetime Emmy-nominated Doctor Who & Terminator: Genisys star Matt Smith.
Variety is reporting that Primetime Emmy-nominee Matt Smith has entered final negotiations with Sony Pictures to join their upcoming Spider-Man universe spinoff, Morbius, which will star Academy Award-winner Jared Leto (Blade Runner 2049; Suicide Squad) in the title role as Dr. Michael Morbius.
Details on his role are being kept under wraps for now, but the report does describe it as major, so there is a possibility he could be playing the primary antagonist, although it may be a while before fans get any sort of confirmation from the studio.
In addition to Leto and Smith, Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim Uprising) will also star in a key role. Daniel Espinosa (Safe House; Life) is helming the project with a script from Lost in Space creators Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Lucas Foster are producing the feature with Palak Patel overseeing for Sony.
Smith is best known for his roles in Doctor Who, The Crown, and Terminator Genisys; and he can be seen later this year in Disney/Lucasfilm's Star Wars: Episode IX, where he reportedly has a key role.
