Back in November of last year, THR reported that Sony Pictures was planning a Spider-Man spinoff based on Morbius the Living Vampire, and now director Antoine Fuqua (The Magnificent 7, The Equalizer 2) has revealed that the studio wanted him to helm the project.

Here's what the filmmaker had to say about it during an interview with JoBlo:

"As a kid I grew up with comic books. They talked to me about Black Panther years ago, way back in the day. There’s some reason they came up and they talked to me about at Sony, a Marvel character, Morbius [The Living Vampire]…that kinda came up. I don’t know, I have a thirteen-year-old son so I’m watching more of that again and it’s exciting to do that. I’d love to create a new one. Y’know, something that’s closer to what I get excited about."

The fact that he's talking about this seems to suggest that he passed on the offer, but at least we know that Sony is now actively seeking a director for the film.

Morbius, a human who gains vampiric powers when he attempts to cure his rare blood disease, seem like an odd choice for his own movie, but Sony seems dead set on forging ahead with this shared Spider-Man universe... sans Spider-Man.

Last we heard, the screenplay was being worked on by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, who also wrote the Power Rangers Reboot, Dracula Untold and The Last Witch Hunter.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - With people suddenly kissing that latest crappy looking Venom trailers ass why should they? I'll continue boycotting Sony like I have been.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - Yeah Venom is the only Spiderman villain that can work in a solo movie. Marvel has talked about Blade, let Marvel use Morbias in a Blade movie, like Blade 2 was originally going to do
