Sam Raimi Admits SPIDER-MAN 3 Was "Awful!"

While chatting with Chris Hardwick, Jonah Ray and Matt Mira during the latest Nerdist podcast (click here to listen), director Sam Raimi ("Army Of Darkness") reflected on some of his past mistakes. Most notable, 2007's Spider-Man 3, which tried to stuff Venom (Topher Grace), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) and James Franco's Green Goblin all into one movie in an ill-fated attempt to top much beloved Spider-Man 2. An hour into the podcast Raimi admits that the Spider-Man 3 was "awful" and that he had "made the wrong story, the wrong way." You can read some of it below, thanks to pajiba.com for transcribing a portion of it.

It’s a movie that just didn’t work very well. I tried to make it work, but I didn’t really believe in all the characters, so that couldn’t be hidden from people who loved Spider-Man. If the director doesn’t love something, it’s wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it. I think [raising the stakes after Spider-Man 2] was the thinking going into it, and I think that’s what doomed us. I should’ve just stuck with the characters and the relationships and progressed them to the next step and not tried to top the bar …

Raimi: [But] directors don’t like to talk about their bad films.

Hardwick: I don’t think that ‘bad’ is the right word.

Raimi: Awful!

Also of note, when Matt Mira tries to compliment Sam Raimi on his 2013 film Oz the Great and Powerful, Raimi then mumbles something negative. Mira then asks, "You don't think so?" To which, Raimi replies dismissively, "I did the best I could."

That's a bit of surprise as it is the most financially successful of his since he directed the Spider-Man trilogy. Though, Raimi doesn't seem to take compliments well throughout the podcast, but I think it has more to do with him being humble. You have to respect that.
SPIDER-MAN 3 - Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) finally has the girl of his dreams, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), and New York City is in the throes of Spider-mania! But when a strange alien symbiote turns Spider-Man's suit black, his darkest demons come to light changing Spider-Man inside as well as out. Spider-Man is in for the fight of his life against a lethal mix of villains - the deadly Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Venom (Topher Grace), and the New Goblin (James Franco) - as well as the enemy within himself.

Cast: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church, James Franco
Director: Sam Raimi * Writers: Sam Raimi, Alvin Sargent & Ivan Raimi

I still can't call it awful, lots of worse films out there. It has its moments.

More of a disappointment, not a complete disaster.

Bigger isn't always better.

Which is why I have more faith in Joas Whedon when he says Avengers 2 doesn't have to be bigger than the 1st, but it will be much deeper. #Win

YES for more of cheesy Spidey and elusive Raimi. Admit it, we'll never forget Tobey doing all kinds of hand sings just to let the web out; Spider-Man's wrestling suit and following night chase; Spidey and Mary Jane's first kiss; him jumping off a building thinking he's got his powers back. There is nothing nowhere as memorable in current Spidey films. MY OPINION.

I re-watched it a few weeks ago, and it's not awful, just boring. I do enjoy it much more than either of the TASM movies.

I knew Spider-man 3 would suck as soon as I heard Venom was in it. Sam Raimi always said he hated venom and the symbiote stories, so why would he even do a movie with those things in the first place? I blame Sony since they make the same exact mistakes in TASM2.

It's also not Raimi's fault the film didn't work, it was (and still is) Sony's.

@FordEl - Spider-Man 3 was boring, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a 2 hour and 22 minute commercial with little payoff. I respect your opinion however.

Eh... It wasn't exactly a good movie, but I don't think I'd call it all-out awful.

Disappointing? Yes.

Cringe-worthy? At times, DEFINITELY.

Awful-in-parts-specifically-Emo-Peter-MJ-relationship-crap-venom-and-the-final-battle? YEP.

But just out-right awful? Nah, I'll give you a break on that one Raimi. There actually was SOME good stuff in there, and you were clearly trying. All things considered...it actually could have been worse...

*cough* ASM2 *cough*
:P

Don't beat yourself up Raimi, it wasn't bad. It was a fun film and a decent end to the trilogy. And all the stuff that didn't work wasn't your fault anyway.

the sandman stuff was really good imo. they should have went with just harry as the villain only. would have been an amazing ending to the trilogy, friend vs friend. but they stuffed in sandman and venom.

maybe a villain could have come in at the end and harry and peter would have teamed up, reconciled and harry would have been killed that way and spiderman defeated because he cannot focus properly. the next movie would have spiderman face the villain that is very personal and would up the stakes.

@Sipprelle

TASM2 to me had an equivalent amount of positives at it did negatives. What really made that movie for me was the chemistry between Andrew and Emma. Also I really liked the interpretation of Harry Osborne and Dane Dehaan in general. Also they did a great job with Gwen's death scene.

However I wasnt a fan of Electro and felt they couldve did better. The inclusion of the Giamatti didnt push the story forward at all, they couldve put away with that. I can just tell Sony intruded way too much on this one. Even Andrew said so much changed during the initial thing that it turned into a completely different movie

I dont compeltely hate SM3 but my negatives outweigh the positives. I respect your opinion as well

You can tell that the scenes Raimi wanted to do were the good ones and the scenes Sony wanted to do were awful.
