The summer of 2012 will probably go down in fanboy history. Let me quote the regular fanboy on this glorious summer.
"Not only are we getting the epic climax to Nolan's Batman trilogy, but we are also getting the F***ING AVENGERS! And also The Amazing Spider-Man. AND NOLAN'S LAST EPIC BATMAN THAT I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT SINCE I SAW CATWOMAN'S EARS!!! TDKR WILL DOMINATE!!!!!!!"
It's sad. Nolanites, Marvelites, and the plain old fanboy, (as if we have THEM anymore.) will flock to theaters, and be extremely disappointed with all the movies I just named. Exept for The Amazing Spider-man. Why? How? How can that movie possibly hope to beat the Avengers and... NOLAN in any humanly possible way!?!?!?! Simple. I can sum it all up in one word. Expectation.
So, how is this going to work? Okay. We expect too much from Nolan. We expect too much from The Avengers. We expect the prologue to be incredible, piss my pants, fantastic. No exceptions. And when it is, we expect the movie itself to be exceptionally brilliant, shit my pants, Oscar worthy, joy ride, that doesn't slow down, edge of your seat, I want more, unbelievable. With the Avengers, well, we're taking it too far. We all speculate wild dreams that the aliens will be Skrulls, Kree, Frost Giants, Thanos, New Men, Mephisto, Shi'ar, Elves, or, dare I say, a new creation. We all saw the new trailer, God forbid you didn't, and we saw Hulk action, a glimpse at the aliens, and the Avengers assembled. In short, we freaked out. We loved it, and our expectations for this film got even higher, if that's even possible. Oh, and why do we even need Nolan and Marvelites? It's stupid. All we do is argue about which is better. Why can't we all just shut up, be fanboys, and watch the movie and love it?
Now, since our expectations are so high, doesn't it make sense that when it comes out, the movie will be nothing like we dreamed it would be? The aliens won't be what we thought they were, so we don't like them. Bane's plan wasn't what we dreamt up. We hate it. Miranda Tate didn't play Talia Al Ghul. She just played the new mayor of Gotham. We hate it. Stan Lee didn't say "Excelsior!", or Cap didn't say, "Avengers Assemble!" We kill ourselves.
Now, fanboys work like magnets. You can't put positive to positive, only positive to negative. What I'm saying is that if you put a fanboy with high expectations for a movie, to a movie, the movie is terrible. But, if you do the same thing, but the fanboy has low expectations, the movie is great. As is the case with the Amazing Spider-Man.
We say the costume is crap. The Lizard is crap. Peter's hair is crap. I've even seen a comment that said:
"I bet Uncle Ben doesn't even die. We barely saw him in the trailer. This movie is shit."
Huh. Have you ever considered that we didn't see him because he dies early on? Probably not. And the people making this movie should be taking some creative liberties. They don't want to use the costume from Raimi's Spider-Trilogy. And don't a lot of movies give new designs to villains, like Lizard in this? Abomination, Blackheart, Mephisto, Whiplash, Green Goblin, Penguin, Bane, Joker? And besides, if he did have the snout, well, he'd look idiotic. And because our expectations are lower, we'll find the movie better. Each movie may be a little better or a little worse than the others, but we all have certain opinion on each, and how everything should look, how people should act, and how damn amazing it's going to be. Spidey has lowest of all. So he gets the most in his theater.
It's Logic. I mean, does anyone remember how you felt about X-Men: First Class, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes? You thought you would hate it. Did you?
This article isn't meant to insult the intelligence of any Nolanite or Marvelite. It wasn't made to disrespect your opinion. I love Nolan's work, and I want to see the Avengers a lot. But it's just, well... we all know that of these three movies, The Amazing Spider-Man is going to be the best in the eyes of the fanboy. And besides, it doesn't even matter. Take in these next few words nicely:
Nolanites, Marvelites. We were once once joined in a group called the fanboy. Now look at us. We argue and fight over which is better, Avengers, or Dark Knight Rises. Why can't we all agree that these movies will both be awesome? Why can't we watch the other movie's trailer without leaving negative comments, and without saying, "TDKR FTW!!!"? Why can't we enjoy these movies for what they really are? Not a dark, realistic take on the Caped Crusader. Not the most awesome movie this world has ever known. Not the movie where Hulk wears khakis, but a tribute. A tribute to these fictional do-gooders, these costumed men and woman who we all love, beating up people who threaten the world, the galaxy, or that part of the street. Why can't we see these movies as a tribute, not a year long debate? Why can't we come together, and celebrate that this year has finally come? Why can't we celebrate Iron Man fighting alongside Captain America, and Thor covering Hulk's back? Why can't we celebrate the epic climax to one of the most phenomenal series of al time? Why can't we accept what Spidey and The Lizard look like? Why can't we end this idiotic debate, go to the movies, buy some popcorn, and witness events that will never leave your mind? I hope you take my words into consideration. Good bye.
