SUICIDE SQUAD - 5 Key Scenes From The Trailers And TV Spots Missing In The Movie
Suicide Squad went through a lot of changes in the editing room, but did you notice how many key scenes from the trailers and TV spots ended up not making it into the final cut? These are the five biggest.
Like Fantastic Four (and possibly even Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), it sounds as if some serious behind the scenes chaos resulted in the version of Suicide Squad which ended up in theaters being nothing like the one envisioned by director David Ayer. That's evident from looking at the trailers as there are many scenes in those which point to Suicide Squad at one point being very different.
There are some obvious examples - the scene where Harley Quinn takes the team's drink orders was well-received, but absent from the movie - and some not so obvious ones, and it's the latter we take a look at here. These five key scenes from the Suicide Squad trailers and TV spots would have changed the movie in a big way, and you'll no doubt be surprised at just how much was ultimately missing.
5. Katana Loses Control
Rick Flag mentions that Katana's sword collects the souls of its victims, but it appears as if an earlier version of Suicide Squad delved even further into the mystic side of her abilities. Not only is a scene which sees Task Force X watching on as the hero observes the souls trapped in there missing from the movie, but the moment Katana opens her eyes only for them to immediately turn black has also disappeared.
The comic book version of the character doesn't have any sort of notable magical abilities, but it seems as if this scene featured her tapping into some sort of otherworldly force. Alternatively, it could be that she was possessed by Enchantress, but this feels like it was probably a big moment in some past cut of Suicide Squad that we'll likely never see. Still, here's hoping this sequence makes it into the deleted scenes if nothing else.
4. El Diablo Lives?!
A couple of scenes featuring Diablo in that water tube are missing from Suicide Squad, but the most intriguing one from the trailers which didn't make it into the final cut is this. Considering the fact that we see the guards from Belle Reve releasing and then drugging Diablo after letting him out of his watery home, chances are that this scene depicting the villain in an actual cell must have come from a version of Suicide Squad where he didn't die in that final battle with Enchantress' CGI brother.
The movie ends with us seeing all of the members (well, other than Captain Boomerang) in slightly nicer surroundings, and it seems as if Diablo was among those rewarded with a real cell where he could pay tribute to his family with a memorial. Why the decision to later kill the standout character was made is hard to say.
3. The Joker Faces Task Force X
This is one of the biggest scenes from the trailers and TV spots which didn't make it into the movie as it would have drastically changed the final act and ending. In the version of Suicide Squad seen in theaters, we never learn what happened to The Joker after that helicopter crash until he returns to break Harley Quinn out, but an earlier version would have seen the Clown Prince of Crime (burned from being shot out of the sky) return to confront Task Force X, something which helps make sense of reports that Jared Leto harrassed his co-stars with some weird gifts.
Things clearly wouldn't have gone his way as he makes his escape by dropping a few grenades, and this scene would have more than likely featured Harley rejecting her puddin' in order to stay with her new teammates. Will it make it on to the Blu-ray? It's unlikely, and that's a shame as we've clearly lost a great moment here.
2. Rick Flag Evaluates The Team
David Ayer has revealed that a more linear cut of Suicide Squad exists which kicked off with June Moone being possessed and the other members of Task Force X winding up in custody before Amanda Waller decided to assemble the team. Perhaps it's that version this scene comes from as we see Rick Flag listing each member and their core abilities while June watches on.
It's worth noting that there are sometimes moments shot specifically for trailers and that this could be one of them, but why tease the romantic relationship between these two if that's the case? A fair bit of that may have ended up on the cutting room floor actually as a shot of June - looking a lot less uptight than normal - lying in bed was also gone. So too was the scene where the Enchantress says, "Let's do something fun," a hint that she was at one time more willing to assist Waller.
1. The Joker And Harley Quinn's Abusive Relationship
This appears to take place after he tortures her with electroconductive therapy and it seems as if he charms her into forgiving him before she takes that dip in A.C.E. Chemicals. Honestly, it's hard to say how all of this would have fitted together, but it's pretty obvious that Harley's arc was originally a lot more complex. Alas, after the mixed response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. were probably scared to tackle anything this dark and serious.
