The Suicide Squad has been described as both a sequel and reboot since first being announced, so what exactly is James Gunn's movie? During a recent interview, the filmmaker was asked how his take on Task Force X relates to the one David Ayer released back in 2016, and it sounds like it doesn't necessarily forget the first instalment... or reference it in any major way.

"Um, it’s its own thing," he says, "It does not contradict the first movie, I don’t think. It might in some small ways...I don’t know." That's kind of a strange response, but Gunn would go on to praise what Ayer did with these characters when he helmed Suicide Squad.

"I know [Suicide Squad] didn’t come out how David wanted it to come out," Gunn says. "But he did one really, really great thing, and that is he picked fantastic actors to work with, and he dealt with these actors in building their characters in a really deep and fearless way. It’s something David definitely deserves to be lauded for, and it’s definitely added to this movie."

Gunn is no stranger to A-Holes, and notes that while the Guardians of the Galaxy are, at their core, all good people, the same can't necessarily be said for the members of Task Force X.

"[In] The Suicide Squad, some of the characters end up being good, some end up being terrible. They don’t just get in fights and say they’re going to kill each other, they actually do get in fights and kill each other. You really don’t know who’s going to live and who’s going to die. I was given full freedom to kill anyone – and I mean anyone – by DC."

New stills have also been released from The Suicide Squad which you can check out below:

I want it to contradict the first film. Erase it from existence.

Gunn sounds like a class act. Compare this to how the New Mutants dude talked about Dark Phoenix, lmfao

Judging by that photo in the plane, it definitely looks like everyone was right about who's going to get immediately killed. I just hope that Boomerang doesn't die in the first round. (Or at all, ideally) He's the best member.

@BlackBeltJones - It's becoming more and more clear though that WB butchered his movie after BvS.

I really doubt he was given permission to kill Harley Quinn, but otherwise I believe that. Honestly just looks like such a hoot, I can’t wait for the madness

night and f*cking day, amazing how a movie can look when you don't apply the piss color filter to every single scene.
