James Gunn Officially Reveals Whether The Suicide Squad Is DCU Canon — Is Considering Polka-Dot Man TV Series

James Gunn has confirmed whether The Suicide Squad is DCU canon, revealed plans for a possible Polka-Dot Man TV series, and explained why Harley Quinn's DCU future remains uncertain.

Earlier today, the news broke that DC Studios is launching a one-off podcast to determine whether The Suicide Squad is DCU canon. It's not supposed to be released until tomorrow, but Spotify has accidentally shared the hour-long special as the "trailer" for the podcast.

So far, that's seen James Gunn confirm plans to cast a Batman who is close in age to Superman and reveal his uncertainty about whether Margot Robbie will reprise the role of Harley Quinn. Now, though, we have an answer to the biggest question of all: is The Suicide Squad part of the DCU?

Peacemaker Season 1 took place in the DCEU, but Season 2 was a DCU story that used a cleverly edited recap to make it so that the first batch of episodes took place in the same world as Creature Commandos and Superman. It's a little confusing for casual fans, and frequently raises questions about whether it would have been better for Gunn to say goodbye to his DCEU creations to focus on building a new world.

The lines have been blurred, though, and it's now official: The Suicide Squad is DCU canon. Gunn made the decision after asking his wife and Emilia Harcourt actress, Jennifer Holland, and Steve Agee for their opinion; they both agreed that the 2021 movie is canon.

"That settles it then. I think that The Suicide Squad is within the canon of the DCU. It's decided. I'd say we have one small asterisk, which is what exactly is the future of Harley Quinn. I want to be given a little leeway with this by the fans because I'm not sure exactly how that's going to manifest itself. But other than that, I think we can pretty much say the entire movie is canon. I don't think there's a problem."

"Maybe somebody is going to come to me on Threads, and I accept the challenges in trying to answer them...we're going to make mistakes in this movie and in other movies, but for the most part, I think it actually fits much more easily into canon than Peacemaker Season 1. Not only is The Suicide Squad canon, but it's the first canon film in the DCU."

Elsewhere in the podcast, Gunn confirmed that he believes Idris Elba's Bloodsport took down David Corenswet's Superman with a Kryptonite bullet and revealed that he's considering a DCU-set TV series revolving around The Suicide Squad's Abner Krill, aka Polka-Dot Man.

"I decided to make him the darkest and saddest character in this entire movie. And, in fact, interestingly enough, [I] have talked about developing a Krill TV show which would be about his mother and their many [superpowered] children," Gunn confirmed. "It's been discussed."

"It's not in active development, but we've talked about it because I think it would be interesting to see what happened to the rest of his family," he continued. "Where did they go, and what were they like back then?"

Is Gunn overestimating the popularity of The Suicide Squad? The movie was released to rave reviews during the pandemic, but only grossed $168.7 million at the worldwide box office. Despite that, it spawned two seasons of Peacemaker and brought characters like Harcourt and Weasel into projects like Black Adam and Creature Commandos.

I mean... no shit? It was an alternate universe which they can easily slap a DCU sticker on it.

Now here come the commentators saying this is literally worse than Hitler

It’s easier to work with a blank slate than it is to really unravel what makes existing older heroes exciting and relevant. Keep working at it Jimmy!

@ArthurFuchsache - I agree 💯 this is just trolling at this point and I think Gunn wants to be fired (or at least not have his contract extended in April), he is acting childish af.

That movie was corny. Another reason why Paramount didn't extend his contract which is set to EXPIRE April 2027...THANK GOD!

He's just trolling now and [frick]ing with everyone. I hope DC does light another $50M on fire for a Polka Dot Man show.

I like the actor a lot and would love to see him get a gig because JIMS GOON is retarded.

PS: There IS NO DCU canon. There IS NO DCU.

This is fine. So it’s TSS, PM season 1, Creature Commandos, Superman, and PM S2, Super girl, and Lanterns and Clayface.

Chronologically it’s: Lanterns, Clayface, TSS, CC, PM S1, Superman, PM S2, and Super girl.

The can add and subtract whichever characters they want for all I care, as I'm not really invested enough to care (fortunately, because of what all is happening).

So, if I like a show, I'll keep watching it and if I like the movie, I'll buy the Blu-ray and watch it more later.

If not, then, nope. It's more fun (and less unenjoyable) at this point.

What a confusing mess!

I enjoyed Polka Dot Man in TSS but I don’t need a show about him tbh…

In regards to TSS , it’s a solid film imo and does work for the most part being in DCU canon…

Sure you have TBD with Margot’s Harley but you could always retcon that by saying it was a new actress’s Harley in that film so that to me is not a big deal.

Plus Elba’s Bloodsport (who I would love to see again) could have taken David’s Superman unaware and shot him with a Kryptonite bullet hence you can then keep the whole Superman hadnt lost until the fight with “The Hammer of Boravia”.

Ultimately I think it works and its fans who are gonna get caught up in the minutia of it then casuals who will just watch the project they have in front & try to enjoy that imo!!.

I've been under the assumption it was canon anyway, so no big deal.
Mrcool210
Mrcool210 - 10/29/2026, 5:45 PM
Okay I understand he made that movie but that movie is informed by stuff that happened before in the DCEU so you can't just say "oh it's canon" without a lot of other stuff being canon by proxy. For example TSS is obviously a sequel to suicide squad and in that movie they were formed because of the death of superman. So then that doesn't fit now does it?
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/29/2026, 6:24 PM
@Mrcool210 - not really

That movie never mentions the first SS so you could just treat it as standalone which that movie is in the first place really

Plus it’s mostly a new team anyway so the ones that were in the first you could just say have prior history with each other and that’s why they know each other like Boomerang ( who is dead anyway) ,Harley & Rick Flag Jr ( who is also dead)

As a Marvel fan I have no idea who the Polka Dot Man is, but if you really need to "explore" the polka dot Man why not write a comic about him? Seems like less money down the pan.
