THE SUICIDE SQUAD: James Gunn Says The Movie Is Finished; Praises WB For Being "Creatively Amazing"

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has confirmed that his upcoming DC Comics sequel/reboot is "fully finished," while praising Warner Bros. for allowing him to complete the movie without interfering.

It's fair to say Warner Bros. has gained a bit of a reputation for "studio interference" over the years (you'll find Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan's recent thoughts on the matter here), which has resulted in some filmmakers' original takes on certain properties being changed, if not outright compromised.

When Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn signed on to helm The Suicide Squad, fans were concerned that he may not be given the creative freedom to fully realize his vision for Task Force X, but it doesn't sound like he ran into many problems in that regard.

While responding to a question via Twitter, Gunn confirmed that The Suicide Squad is now "fully finished and cut," while praising WB for allowing him to complete the film his way with little to no meddling.

Based on everything we've seen and heard so far, Gunn is not simply towing the studio line here. His Suicide Squad "requel" will be R-rated, and several members of the cast have promised that we're in for a wild, insane ride.

We'll find out for ourselves when the movie premieres in theatres and on HBO Max on August 6. For now, you can check out a revealing new synopsis right here.

@AC1 - I was looking forward to Ayer's original too, hopefully it doesn't disappoint and if it does we won't have anyone to blame but James Gunn himself. Lets hope he doesn't have a bad day at work like Patty Jenkins did with WW84.

@mastakilla39 - true, but that's pretty much just a risk with any film/show/book etc. Could have all the talent in the world behind it and excellent source material to work with, and one small thing might not click and it derails the whole thing.

I do feel like Ayer's film was largely screwed up by studio interference, including them hiring that movie trailer company to edit the actual movie if that was true. That's not to say it would've been perfect if he had full control, there were ideas of his that I personally didn't like (like tattooed gangster Joker, although I thought Leto was a good choice at the time, or Enchantress being the villain, etc) but I think it would've at least made more sense if he had more control.

As for WW84, I haven't seen it so I can't really comment on that but even from the trailers, prerelease info, possible leaks, etc there are a lot of ideas that I wasn't keen on there which is a shame because Jenkins and Gadot made an excellent movie the first time around, but like I said sometimes one thing not working can derail the whole thing which I'm guessing might be the case with WW84 if it's as bad as the people who don't like it say it is.

My hype for this movie ended with: ''silly humour in every scene.''

It just seems like an R-rated Guardians with better characters.

@WeaponXCII -
I kinda want Gunn to do a Justice League International movie. The problem I have with him is that I think he actually benefits from being reigned in, especially with PG-13 films. He can potentially go off the rails with R-rated film. I don't want another The Belko Experiment.

@Kyos - after the Covid delays I'm getting the feeling that we'll have to adjust out expectations to the times we live in. They had so many production stops along the way that I'm dreading to see the parts they shot during the pandemic.
Recently saw a student film made before and during the pandemic and you saw where they had to stop and then pick up later. It seemed like parts that didn't fit into the whole, sadly

“Praises WB for being creatively amazing.”
Until the studio exec’s decide to make changes to fit their consistency of changing directors visions to fit the narrow mindedness of what they think will sell tickets.
Just saying... they’ve done it before.

@slickrickdesigns - Yea, I would never trust DC. Their habit of f#cking with super hero films goes all the way back to the Christopher Reeve films. The "okay" things, then get blind with $$$, freak out, and then change things before the films are released. I would never sell on I.P. to them.
Blergh
Blergh - 2/5/2021, 7:48 AM
@LSHF - to be fair DC isn't a separate film studio like Marvel is to Disney. It's still WB that is producing it fully.

They have some great films in their repertoire, Nolans trilogy comes to mind.
LSHF
LSHF - 2/5/2021, 8:03 AM
@Blergh - I agree. I have many of their films on Blu-ray. And, yes, I don't expect their judgement to be as good as Marvel Studios', because many of the people who have run Warner aren't writers and directors, so they don't seem to know if they have something really good on their hands or not.

Whereas, Marvel is run by artists who "do" know this stuff.

I guess if Warner acted like less of a "business" and was run more by artists (who had good business sense), they might do better.

In the end, they just have to trust the writers/directors and many times they end up with great films.

It is just with the very expensive super hero films, they sometimes get financially nervous, freak out, and make things worse (see the original Superman and Batman films from the seventies and eighties).
Blergh
Blergh - 2/5/2021, 8:37 AM
@LSHF - I think where Marvel has the advantage is them being a completely seperate division from Disney, sure there are notes coming in and out but overall they function as a mostly autonomous company.
They only do Marvel stuff.
Meanwhile WB treats DC more as a brand than anything else, their producers are going in and out of differing projects and hence have other work bleeding into these projects.
If WB really wants to focus on DC: make it a seperate company, give them notes but let them do what they think is best otherwise.
Finding a passionate (albeit controling) producer like Feige would be a solid step

I really hope this movie is just completely bonkers, I think Gunn is a great fit for this property and I’m really hopeful it turns out great. I’m also really glad he’s able to return for GotG Vol. 3, I wonder if that’s going to be his last Marvel film and then he comes back for Suicide Squad 2 or if he manages to walk between worlds and have two different franchises simultaneously

@Twenty23Three - Maybe that is why they made sure there was what looks like the longest period of time from a film being completely done to the actual theatrical release date.
